Article Synopsis
  • Keratin-based hair-straightening treatments are common in Israel but have been linked to severe acute kidney injury (AKI), with reports indicating potential systemic absorption of harmful ingredients.
  • A study reviewed 26 patients aged 14-58, who experienced AKI symptoms like nausea and abdominal pain after using these treatments from 2019-2022, with significant findings from kidney biopsies.
  • The study highlights acute oxalate nephropathy as a primary concern, suggesting that the absorption of glycolic acid derivatives could be a largely unrecognized cause of kidney issues, especially in young and otherwise healthy individuals.

Management of advanced Parkinson's disease in Israel: Clinicians viewpoint and action items.

Front Aging Neurosci

October 2022

Department of Neurology, Movement Disorders Clinic, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, School of Medicine, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is taking a staggering toll on healthcare systems worldwide, with the bulk of the expenditures invested in the late stages of the disease. Considering the rising life expectancy and the increasing prevalence of PD across the globe, a clear understanding of the early signs and treatment options available for advanced PD (APD), will facilitate tailoring management programs and support services. This task is complicated by the lack of both global consensus in defining APD and standardized care guidelines.

Impact of margin ablation after EMR of large nonpedunculated colonic polyps in routine clinical practice.

Gastrointest Endosc

March 2023

Department of Gastroenterology, Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa, Israel. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Owing to its simplicity, effectiveness, and safety, EMR is the preferred treatment for the majority of large (≥20 mm) nonpedunculated colonic polyps (LNPCPs); however, residual and recurrent adenomas (RRAs) encountered during surveillance constitute a major limitation. Thermal ablation of the post-EMR mucosal defect margin has been shown to be highly efficacious in reducing RRA in a randomized trial setting, but data on effectiveness in clinical practice are scarce. We aimed to determine the effectiveness of this technique for reducing RRAs in routine clinical practice.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has rapidly spread around the world, causing a global public health and economic crisis. A critical limitation in detecting COVID-19-related pneumonia is that it is often manifested as a "silent pneumonia", pulmonary auscultation that sounds "normal" using a standard stethoscope. Chest computed tomography is the gold standard for detecting COVID-19 pneumonia; however, radiation exposure, availability and cost preclude its utilisation as a screening tool for COVID-19 pneumonia.

Objectives: Thyroglobulin, produced exclusively by thyroid follicular cells, serves as a specific tumor marker for the follow-up of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients after thyroidectomy. However, its role as a predictor of malignancy in patients with thyroid nodules is controversial. We assessed the potential role of preoperative serum thyroglobulin concentration to predict DTC in patients without a preoperative diagnosis of malignancy who underwent partial or total thyroidectomy.

Background: Idiopathic infantile hypercalcemia (IIH) etiologies include pathogenic variants in CYP24A1, leading to increased 1,25(OH) D, hypercalciuria and suppressed parathyroid hormone (PTH), and in SLC34A1 and SLC34A3, leading to the same metabolic profile via increased phosphaturia. IIH has not been previously described in CKD due to kidney hypodysplasia (KHD).

Methods: Retrospective study of children with bilateral KHD and simultaneously tested PTH and 1,25(OH)D, followed in a tertiary care center between 2015 and 2021.

J Clin Med

September 2022

Jesselson Integrated Heart Center, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem 9112102, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiogenic shock, often following a heart attack, leads to poor outcomes and high mortality rates, making timely treatment critical.
  • Early revascularization of the affected blood vessel is the best approach to improve survival, but it doesn’t eliminate the risk of death.
  • Temporary circulatory support devices can help manage the condition, yet there is a lack of solid evidence on their effective use, highlighting the need for expert care from multiple disciplines.

Background: Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC US) has been proven to be an accurate and efficient tool in thyroid nodule evaluation. Thyroid nodule aspiration can be acquired with either of two techniques: the short axis, in which only the tip of the needle is observed, and the long axis, in which the entire length of the needle is observed. Our retrospective study aimed to compare the adequacy of the two techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the effectiveness of a modified CHADS-VASc score (M-RCHADS-VASc) that includes kidney function and male sex in predicting mortality risk for COVID-19 patients.
  • Conducted with 800 hospitalized adults, results showed 30-day mortality rates increased with higher M-RCHADS-VASc categories: 4.7% in low risk, 17% in intermediate, and 31% in high risk.
  • The M-RCHADS-VASc score proved useful in assessing patient outcomes, also correlating with higher needs for interventions like mechanical ventilation and kidney support.
