There is considerable evidence to suggest that individuals with mental illness as well as their carers and families are discriminated against across a number of domains. It is also well recognized that people with mental illness are likely to die younger than their counterparts who do not have mental illness. We propose that a Magna Carta is urgently needed to protect the rights of people with mental illness and help reduce discrimination.

Introduction: Although measuring vasti muscle onset may reveal whether pain relief is associated with altering this parameter during activities in subjects with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), it may be necessary to determine whether the inherent properties of the dominant leg influences the reliability of measuring VMO-VL muscle onset. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of leg predomination on reliability testing of the VMO-VL muscle onset measurement during single leg squatting in healthy subjects.
Methods: The onset of VMO and VL muscles of ten healthy subjects with a right dominant leg was assessed during single leg squatting.

Introduction: Although measuring vasti muscle activity may reveal whether pain relief is associated with altering this parameter during functional activities in subjects with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), it may be necessary to determine whether the inherent properties of the dominant leg influences the reliability of measuring VMO/VL amplitude. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of leg predomination on reliability testing of the VMO/VL amplitude measurement during single leg squatting in healthy subjects.
Methods: Using an electromyography (EMG) unit, the ratio amplitudes of VMO and VL muscles of ten healthy subjects with a right dominant leg was assessed during single leg squatting.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common heritable and androgen-dependent hair loss condition in men. Twelve genetic risk loci are known to date, but it is unclear which genes at these loci are relevant for AGA. Dermal papilla cells (DPCs) located in the hair bulb are the main site of androgen activity in the hair follicle.

Guidelines recommend low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) for at least 3-6 months and possibly indefinitely for patients with active malignancy. There are, however, few data supporting treatment with LMWH beyond 6 months.

Chronic constipation is a highly debilitating condition, affecting a significant proportion of the community. The burden to the health care system and impact on individual patients quality of life is immense. Unfortunately, the aetiology underlying chronic constipation is poorly understood and animal models are being used increasingly to investigate possible intrinsic neurogenic and myogenic mechanisms leading to relevant colonic sensori-motor dysfunction.

Immune (idiopathic) thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoantibody-mediated condition characterized by an abnormally low number of platelets in the circulating blood. Originally, the cause of ITP was attributed to accelerated antibody-mediated platelet destruction where the rate of thrombopoiesis was inadequate to offset the increased rate of platelet destruction. However, new evidence has indicated that insufficient or inadequate platelet production is also responsible for low platelet counts, and research has focused on the development of treatments that increase platelet production.

In the post-genomic era, proteomic strategies are at the forefront of cancer research. By studying the complement of all expressed genes, proteomics aims to provide knowledge of biomarkers indicative of the physiological state of cancer cells at a specific time, enabling screening, early diagnosis, monitoring the course of cancer development/progression, and gauging the efficacy and safety of novel therapeutic agents. Onco-proteomics thus has the ability to revolutionize oncology practice by delivering highly selective and individualised clinical care.

The definition of molecular imaging provided by the Society of Nuclear Medicine is "the visualization, characterization and measurement of biological processes at the molecular and cellular levels in humans and other living systems". This review gives an overview of the technologies available for and the potential benefits from molecular imaging at the preclinical stage. It focuses on the use of imaging probes based on bioconjugates and for reasons of brevity confines itself to discussion of applications in the field of oncology, although molecular imaging can be equally useful in many fields including cardiovascular medicine, neurosciences, infection, and others.

Background: Poor academic performance at school can have a substantial effect on opportunities in adult life and as such it is imperative that researchers establish the chief causes of underachievement. This paper examines performance at the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), examined at age 16, with reference to psychological distress and depressive symptoms as measured at age 13-14.
Methods: The data come from a school based prospective epidemiological study of a representative multiethnic sample of adolescents attending East London secondary schools in Tower Hamlets, Hackney, and Newham.

Ageing and many associated pathologies are accompanied by accumulation of altered proteins. It is suggested that erroneous polypeptide biosynthesis, cytosolic and mitochondrial, is not an insignificant source of aberrant protein in growing and non-mitotic cells. It is proposed that (i) synthesis of sufficient proteases and chaperone proteins necessary for rapid elimination of altered proteins, from cytoplasmic and mitochondrial compartments, is related to cellular protein biosynthetic potential, and (ii) cells growing slowly, or not at all, automatically generate lower levels of protease/chaperone molecules than cells growing rapidly, due to decreased general rate of protein synthesis and lowered amount of error-protein produced per cell.

C-Met, the receptor of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), through overexpression or mutation, is a major protooncogene that provides an attractive molecular target for cancer therapy. HGF/c-Met-induced tumorigenesis is dependent, in part, on the transcription factor and oncogene signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), which is believed to be activated by the receptor at the plasma membrane and then to travel to the nucleus where it acts. We demonstrate that although the robust signal to STAT3 elicited from the cytokine oncostatin-M does indeed support this mechanism of STAT3 action, for the weaker STAT3 signal emanating from c-Met, the activated receptor itself needs to be delivered to a perinuclear endosomal compartment to sustain phosphorylated STAT3 in the nucleus.

In pilgrims returning to the UK from the Hajj in 2005 and 2006, protection from PCR-confirmed influenza by influenza vaccine was estimated using verified vaccination histories from those with symptoms consistent with influenza. Of 538 patients whose nasal swabs were analysed and immunisation histories confirmed 115 (21%) were in a high-risk group for influenza; half of these (58/115) were immunised against influenza, compared with a fifth (90/423) of those not at high risk. Five percent of vaccinated 'at risk' pilgrims compared with 14% of unvaccinated (RR 0.

Rats and mice, when subjected to methionine restriction (MetR), may live longer with beneficial changes to their mitochondria. Most explanations of these observations have centered on MetR somehow suppressing the effects of oxygen free radicals. It is suggested here that MetR's effects on protein metabolism should also be considered when attempting to explain its apparent anti-aging actions.

A high incidence of respiratory infection, including influenza, has been reported at the Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Reported rates of influenza have been higher among UK than among domestic pilgrims, but this could be explained by methodological differences among studies. Accordingly, the present study compared the frequencies of respiratory viruses among UK and Saudi pilgrims using the same study design.
