This study examined the association of estimated heel bone mineral density (eBMD, derived from quantitative ultrasound) with: (1) prevalent and incident cardiovascular diseases (CVDs: ischemic heart disease (IHD), myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure (HF), non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM), arrhythmia), (2) mortality (all-cause, CVD, IHD), and (3) cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) measures of left ventricular and atrial structure and function and aortic distensibility, in the UK Biobank. Clinical outcomes were ascertained using health record linkage over 12.3 yr of prospective follow-up.

Background: Extracellular volume fraction (ECV) is a marker for myocardial fibrosis and infiltration, can be quantified using cardiac computed tomography (ECV), and has prognostic utility in several diseases. This study aims to map out regional differences in ECV to obtain greater insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms of ECV expansion and its clinical implications.
Methods: Three prospective cohorts were included: patients with aortic stenosis (AS) and coexisting AS and transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis were referred for a transcatheter aortic valve replacement and had ECG-gated CT angiography and Technetium-99m-labelled 3,3-diphosphono-1,2-propanodicarboxylic acid scintigraphy to differentiate between the 2 cohorts.

Background: Early detection and diagnosis of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease are key to preventing progression, and echocardiography has an important diagnostic role. Standard echocardiography might not be feasible in high-prevalence regions due to its high cost, complexity, and time requirement. Handheld echocardiography might be an easy-to-use, low-cost alternative, but its performance in screening for and diagnosing acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease needs further investigation.

Background And Importance: Following the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), a low body temperature on arrival at the hospital and on admission to the ICU is reportedly associated with increased mortality. Whether this association exists in the prehospital setting, however, is unknown.
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate whether the initial, prehospital core temperature measured post-ROSC is independently associated with survival to hospital discharge in adult patients following OHCA.
Background: Patients in intensive care units (ICU) are at an increased risk of pressure injuries. In ICUs, specialised support surfaces are an intervention often used to prevent pressure injuries. Background: Clinical practice guidelines recommend the Lateralization Index (LI) as the standard for determining surgical eligibility in primary aldosteronism (PA). Our goal was to identify the optimal LI cut-offs in adrenal venous sampling (AVS) for diagnosing PA that is amenable to surgical cure.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective international cohort study across 16 institutions in 11 countries, including 1,550 patients with PA who underwent AVS, with and/or without ACTH stimulation.

Objective: There is an assumption that because EBLVR requires less use of hospital resources, offsetting the higher cost of endobronchial valves, it should therefore be the treatment of choice wherever possible. We have tested this hypothesis in a retrospective analysis of the two in similar groups of patients.
Methods: In a 4-year experience, we performed 177 consecutive LVR procedures: 83 patients underwent Robot Assisted Thoracoscopic (RATS) LVRS and 94 EBLVR.

Aims: Standard methods of heart chamber volume estimation in cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) typically utilize simple geometric formulae based on a limited number of slices. We aimed to evaluate whether an automated deep learning neural network prediction of 3D anatomy of all four chambers would show stronger associations with cardiovascular risk factors and disease than standard volume estimation methods in the UK Biobank.
Methods And Results: A deep learning network was adapted to predict 3D segmentations of left and right ventricles (LV, RV) and atria (LA, RA) at ∼1 mm isotropic resolution from CMR short- and long-axis 2D segmentations obtained from a fully automated machine learning pipeline in 4723 individuals with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and 5733 without in the UK Biobank.

Methods And Results: We searched Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library until 31 December 2022. Studies were included if (i) HF patients required inotropic support at CRT implantation; (ii) patients were ≥18 years old; and (iii) they provided a clear definition of 'inotrope dependence' or 'inability to wean'.
