Unsuccessful healing represents a significant medical dilemma for both patients and clinicians and create a financial burden on the health care system. Despite the efforts of physicians, many injuries fail to heal with standard care alone. For decades human amniotic membrane composed of both amnion and chorion has shown remarkable therapeutic potential, but only recent preservation methods have allowed its widespread use.

Porphyrin synthesis under solvent-free conditions represents the "greening" of a traditional synthesis that normally requires large amounts of organic solvent, and has hindered the industrial-scale synthesis of this useful class of molecules. We have found that the four-fold acid-catalysed condensation of aldehyde and pyrrole to yield a tetra-substituted porphyrin is possible through mechanochemical techniques, without a solvent present. This represents one of the still-rare examples of carbon-carbon bond formation by mechanochemistry.

Replicative Helicase DnaB interacts with DnaA, DnaC, DnaG, and DNA polymerase III to commence replication, increase the movement rate of the replication fork, and to assemble part of the primosome. The formation of the replication fork is limited by the ability to load DnaB to the DNA, thus DnaB has shown to be vital to a large extent. In the absence of DnaB, the replication fork is not maintained and in a state of inactivity the replication fork degrades and collapses.

Cell transplantation therapies to treat diseases related to dysfunction of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are limited in part by an inability to navigate to the optic nerve head within the retina. During development, RGCs are guided by a series of neurotrophic factors and guidance cues; however, these factors and their receptors on the RGCs are developmentally regulated and often not expressed during adulthood. Netrin-1 is a guidance factor capable of guiding RGCs in culture and relevant to guiding RGC axons toward the optic nerve head in vivo.

Unlabelled: The ActiGraph (AG) is the most commonly used research-grade physical activity monitor. Although several investigators have examined the effects of the "low-frequency extension" (LFE) on step counts in the free-living environment, a direct comparison with a valid criterion method is lacking. We sought to determine the accuracy of the AG's LFE to measure step counts during laboratory and free-living activities in two versions of the device (GT1M and GT3X).

Background: Initial antibiotics with planned interval appendectomy (interval AP) have been used to treat patients with complicated perforated appendicitis; however, little experience exists with this approach in children with suspected acute perforated appendicitis (SAPA). We sought to determine the outcome of initial antibiotics and interval AP in children with SAPA.
Methods: Over an 18-month period, 751 consecutive patients underwent appendectomy including 105 patients with SAPA who were treated with initial intravenous antibiotics and planned interval AP ≥ 8 weeks after presentation.

The important role of cell cycle regulatory molecules in all trans-retinoic acid (ATRA)- and vitamin D3-induced growth inhibition and differentiation induction has been intensively studied in both acute myeloid leukaemia primary cells and a variety of leukaemia cell lines. Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK)-activating kinase has been demonstrated to interact with retinoic acid receptor (RAR)α in acute promyelocytic leukaemia cells, and inhibition of CDK-activating kinase by ATRA causes hypophosphorylation of PML-RARα, leading to myeloid differentiation. In many cases, downregulation of CDK activity by ATRA and vitamin D3 is a result of elevated p21- and p27-bound CDKs.

Information on the quality of healthcare gives providers an incentive to improve care, and this incentive should be stronger in more competitive markets. We examine this hypothesis by studying Pennsylvanian hospitals during the years 1995-2004 to see whether those hospitals located in more competitive markets increased the quality of the care provided to Medicare patients after report cards rating the quality of their Coronary Artery Bypass Graft programs went online in 1998. We find that after the report cards went online, hospitals in more competitive markets used more resources per patient, and achieved lower mortality among more severely ill patients.

A chronic wound fails to complete an orderly and timely reparative process and places patients at increased risk for wound complications that negatively impact quality of life and require greater health care expenditure. The role of extracellular matrix (ECM) is critical in normal and chronic wound repair. Not only is ECM the largest component of the dermal skin layer, but also ECM proteins provide structure and cell signalling that are necessary for successful tissue repair.

Context of reception has been discussed widely in the sociological and anthropological literature, but no measures of this construct exist. We designed a measure of perceived context of reception and provide initial support for the factorial validity, internal consistency reliability, and incremental and discriminant validity of scores generated by this measure. A sample of 302 recent-immigrant Hispanic parent-adolescent dyads from Miami and Los Angeles completed the new perceived context of reception measure, as well as measures of perceived discrimination; Hispanic/American cultural practices, values, and identifications; and depressive symptoms.

One can find the optimal antibody dilution for immunostaining by repeated staining on the same tissue section by using a less dilute antibody for each attempt. Using secondary antibody and horseradish peroxidase conjugated to a dextran polymer, a section stained repeatedly with several dilutions of antibody appears as good as a section stained with only the last dilution.

We present a general discussion about the fundamental physical principles involved in a novel class of optical superlenses that permit to realize in the far-field direct non-scanning images with subwavelength resolution. Described superlenses are based in the illumination of the object under observation with surface waves excited by fluorescence, the enhanced transmission of fluorescence via coupling with surface waves, and the occurrence of far-field coherence-related fluorescence diffraction phenomena. A Fourier optics description of the image formation based on illumination with surface waves is presented, and several recent experimental realizations of this technique are discussed.
