Metagenomics insights into bacterial diversity and antibiotic resistome of the sewage in the city of Belém, Pará, Brazil.

Introduction: The advancement of antimicrobial resistance is a significant public health issue today. With the spread of resistant bacterial strains in water resources, especially in urban sewage, metagenomic studies enable the investigation of the microbial composition and resistance genes present in these locations. This study characterized the bacterial community and antibiotic resistance genes in a sewage system that receives effluents from various sources through metagenomics.

A Rare Case of Desmoplastic Fibroma. Spontaneous Mandibular Regeneration with 3 Years Follow up - Case Report.

Desmoplastic fibroma is a benign, rare, but locally aggressive lesion. The intraosseous type rarely presents in the jaws. Desmoplastic fibroma represents the intraosseous counterpart of the soft tissue fibromatoses or desmoid tumor, affects predominantly young people with an affinity for the mandible.

Factors associated with 5-min APGAR score, death and survival in neonatal intensive care: a case-control study.

Background: The 5-minute APGAR score is clinically used as a screening tool to assess how the newborn has reacted to previous care, remaining relevant for predicting neonatal survival. This study aimed to analyze the determinants of the 5th minute APGAR score, and the factors associated with the death and survival of newborns with low APGAR scores hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at a referral public hospital in North Brazil.

Methods: This was a hospital-based retrospective case-control study with 277 medical records.

The Genetic Profile and Serum Level of IL-8 Are Associated with Chronic Hepatitis B and C Virus Infection.

The present study evaluated the -251 A/T polymorphism in samples from 74 patients with chronic hepatitis B (HBV), 100 patients with chronic hepatitis C (HCV), and 300 healthy donors (CG). The correlations of this polymorphism with plasma IL-8 and disease stage were calculated. Polymorphisms were identified by real-time PCR.

TNFA -308G>A and IL10 -1082A>G polymorphisms seem to be predictive biomarkers of chronic HCV infection.

Background: Genetic changes may induce dysregulated cytokine production and affect the progression of the chronic disease caused by the hepacivirus C (HCV) because the balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines determines the outcome of infection. This study evaluated the TNFA -308G>A and IL10 -1082A>G polymorphisms in the susceptibility and progress of chronic hepatitis C.

Method: The study included 101 samples from patients with chronic hepatitis C and 300 samples from healthy donors.

The TGFB1 -509C/T polymorphism and elevated TGF-β1 levels are associated with chronic hepatitis C and cirrhosis.

The IFN-γ and TGF-β1 cytokines perform antagonistic activities in the immune response, and polymorphisms in these genes may induce changes in their plasma levels and influence the course of chronic Hepacivirus C (HCV) infection. The present study evaluated the IFNG +874A/T and TGFB1 -509 C/T polymorphisms in 99 samples from patients with chronic hepatitis C and in 300 samples from healthy donors, and the present study also investigated the association of cytokine plasma level with disease stage. Polymorphisms were identified by real-time PCR, and cytokine levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Leiomyoma of the Cheek.

Leiomyomas are rare benign tumors that grow in the tunica media of smooth muscle cells. Leiomyomas occur most frequently in the uterus or gastrointestinal tract and only very rarely in the area of the cheek. This study reports on a rare case of a leiomyoma in the cheek of a 43-year-old woman, who presented with a well-circumscribed, asymptomatic, mobile swelling in the right cheek.

Custom-Made Titanium Miniplates Associated With Ultrahigh-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene Graft in Orthognathic Surgery: An Adjunct to Maxillary Advancement.

Patients with considerable maxillomandibular anteroposterior discrepancies and maxillary hypoplasia require corrective treatment through orthognathic surgery. However, in the treatment of severe maxillary retrognathism, it is necessary to reconstruct areas of bone deficiency through grafting techniques in addition to maxillary advancement using only the Le Fort I osteotomy. Treatment in these patients is more challenging and requires high surgical predictability.

Use of refrigerant spray of a propane/butane/isobutane gas mixture in the management of keratocystic odontogenic tumors: a preliminary study.

Purpose: Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is an aggressive benign tumor and the management by complete enucleation followed by cryotherapy maintains the inorganic bone matrix, resulting in better repair and reduces the rates of recurrence. A refrigerant spray with a propane/butane/isobutane gas mixture has been pointed to as an alternative to liquid nitrogen, because the device is easy to handle and contain within the cavity, providing better control and lower risk of injury to the adjacent soft tissue. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of enucleation followed by cryosurgery using a refrigerant spray of this gas mixture in ten patients diagnosed with KCOT.

Intrahepatic mRNA Expression of FAS, FASL, and FOXP3 Genes Is Associated with the Pathophysiology of Chronic HCV Infection.

Unlabelled: This study aimed to evaluate the relative mRNA expression of Fas receptor (FAS), Fas ligand (FASL), and forkhead box protein 3 (FOXP3) in liver biopsy specimens obtained from patients with viral and non-viral chronic hepatitis and correlate their expression with the fibrosis stage. A total of 51 liver biopsy specimens obtained from HBV (n = 6), HCV (n = 28), and non-viral hepatic disease (NVHD) (n = 9) patients and from individuals with normal liver histology (n = 8) (control-CT) were analyzed. Quantifications of the target genes were assessed using qPCR, and liver biopsies according to the METAVIR classification.

NGF and P75NTR gene expression is associated with the hepatic fibrosis stage due to viral and non-viral causes.

This study evaluated the relative mRNA expression levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) and the p75 neurothrophin receptor (p75NTR) in different histological stages of human liver disease. Fifty-one liver biopsy specimens obtained from patients with hepatitis B virus (n = 6), hepatitis C virus (n = 28), and non-viral hepatitis--(n = 9) and standard histological liver (n = 8) as controls (CT) were subjected to qPCR and histopathological exams. Our data revealed a significant difference in the NGF expression levels between the three patient groups and the Control group.
