Automatic fall detectors and the fear of falling.

We studied the effect of automatic fall detection units on the fear of falling. Participants were community alarm users living in the community aged over 75 years or those aged 60-74 years who had experienced a fall in the previous six months. Of those approached, 31% consented to take part; the main reason given for potential participants declining involvement was that they were happy with the technology they already had.

We describe the management of a 23-yr-old woman with extreme needle and mask phobia, presenting for an emergency Caesarean section for fetal distress. She also suffered from spina bifida cystica with no sensation from mid thigh. Regional anaesthesia, rapid sequence induction, and gaseous induction were not possible.

Aims: A community diabetes eye screening service using slit-lamp biomicroscopy and colour fundus photography was set up in 1993 at the Barnsley District General Hospital Diabetes Centre with a foot screening service being added in 1994. The service is available for all diabetic patients in the Barnsley health district (encompassing 220,000 people). After 4 1/2 years, a survey was carried out to establish the uptake of this service.

The Health Service Indicator (HSI) for Radiology Services in the UK is represented by a cost per case figure based on annual expenditure and workloads in individual departments. These show significant variations betweeen departments for a number of predictable reasons. Detailed analysis shows good correlation between population-based radiology costs and workloads and that departments with low cost per case values have above average workloads.
