Mobility and Sporting Activity After Renal Trauma: A Survey Regarding Best Clinical Practice During the Recovery Stage.

Objective: To evaluate strategies that are followed after pediatric renal trauma during the recovery stage, with an emphasis on mobility and involvement in subsequent sporting activities. Renal trauma is the most common urogenital trauma in children. The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) scale is most commonly used to stratify the severity of injury.

Background: The term glass ceiling coined by Loden in 1978 is commonly used to describe difficulties faced by minorities and women when trying to move into senior roles.

Objective: To analyse trends and patterns for female representation at the European Association of Urology (EAU) and European Society for Paediatric Urology (ESPU) annual general meetings over the past decade.

Design Setting And Participants: We used objective data on female representation in the roles of chairs, moderators, and lecture speakers at the EAU and ESPU meetings from 2012 to 2022.

[Health status of endoscopy personnel in Austria].

Background: Working in the field of endoscopy is associated with physical and psychological challenges, but we lack data as to whether it influences the health status of endoscopy personnel. The aim of the present survey was to evaluate the health status of endoscopy personnel in Austria and draw comparisons.

Method: In 2019, a standardized questionnaire of Hogrefe Publishers and a self-designed SurveyMonkey questionnaire were sent online to doctors (n=326) and nursing staff (n=234) working in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy in Austria.

Femoral antetorsion after calcar-guided short-stem total hip arthroplasty: A cadaver study.

Calcar-guided short stems in total hip arthroplasty (THA) permit surgeons to successfully reconstruct postoperative femoroacetabular offset, accurately restore leg length, and adequately re-establish a wide range of caput-collum-diaphyseal angles. However, their effect on femoral antetorsion is less known. Indeed, controlling antetorsion of the femoral stem can be challenging because of the differences in individual femoral geometry and curvature.

Capecitabine in combination with bendamustine in pretreated women with HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer: results of a phase II trial (AGMT MBC-6).

Background: Bendamustine, a medication approved for the treatment of indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma, has already shown anticancer activity in metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Here, we present the results of a phase II trial of bendamustine in combination with capecitabine in pre-treated patients with MBC.

Patients And Methods: AGMT MBC-6 is a multicentre, open-label, single-arm phase II study in HER2-negative MBC.

Detection of bladder trabeculation by voiding cystourethrography and sonography: observations in boys with posterior urethral valves.

Background: As trabeculated bladder wall is often referred to as a sign of chronically increased intravesical pressure, we investigated whether voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) or sonography reliably predicts bladder trabeculation on later urethrocystoscopy.

Methods: A total of 76 consecutive patients (2012-2017) with cystoscopically confirmed posterior urethral valves (PUV) and pre-endoscopy VCUG were included. Sonography data were available for 68 of these patients.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has been a problem for patients throughout in recent decades worldwide and its prevalence is increasing. Until 20 years ago, the established treatments were the proton pump inhibitors (PPI) and varieties of laparoscopic fundoplication (LF). Increasing experience with endoscopy and knowledge of the oesophagogastric junction (EGJ) has led to new options in the treatment of GERD.

Estrogen receptor β and treatment with a phytoestrogen are associated with inhibition of nuclear translocation of EGFR in the prostate.

Knockout of ERβ in the mouse leads to nuclear expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in the prostate. To examine whether ERβ plays a similar role in the human prostate, we used four cohorts of men: 1) a Swedish cohort of normal prostates and PCa (prostate cancer) of different Gleason grades; 2) men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) treated with the 5α-reductase inhibitor, finasteride, and finasteride together with the ERβ agonists, soy isoflavones; 3) men with PCa above Gleason grade 4 (GG4), treated with ADT (androgen deprivation therapy) and abiraterone (AA), the blocker of androgen synthesis for different durations; and 4) men with GG4 PCa on ADT or ADT with the AR (androgen receptor) blocker, enzalutamide, for 4 mo to 6 mo. In men with BPH, finasteride treatment induced EGFR nuclear expression, but, when finasteride was combined with isoflavones, EGFR remained on the cell membrane.

[Planning and Design of a Prospective Randomised Multi-Centre Trial on the Repair of Large Hiatal Hernias with Sutures vs. Pledgeted Sutures vs. Absorbable Mesh].

Background: The hernia recurrence rate after surgical treatment of large hiatal hernias is still very high. The optimal technique to reduce the recurrence rate is still under debate. The aim of this work is to clarify whether pledgeted reinforced sutures or a resorbable mesh can reduce the recurrence rate compared to hiatus closure with only sutures.

Treatment Algorithm for Patients With Gastric Adenocarcinoma: An Austrian Consensus on Systemic Therapy.

Despite recent advances in the treatment of gastric cancer, mortality related to this disease is still substantial. Surgery and chemotherapy represent the cornerstones of patient management. Targeted treatments that include anti-angiogenic agents and the advent of immunotherapies can contribute to improved patient prognosis.

Rapid advances in imaging technology have improved the detection, characterization and staging of colorectal liver metastases, hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. A variety of imaging modalities are available and play a pivotal role in the work-up of patients, particularly as imaging findings determine resectability. Surgery often represents the only measure that can render long-term survival possible.

Prognostic role of plasma fibrinogen in patients with uterine leiomyosarcoma - a multicenter study.

Fibrinogen has an important pathophysiological role in tumor cell progression and development of metastases in different types of cancer. The present study aimed to evaluate the role of pre-treatment fibrinogen plasma concentrations as a biomarker for tumor biology and prognosis in patients with uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS). Pathological Complete Response to Neoadjuvant Trastuzumab Is Dependent on HER2/CEP17 Ratio in HER2-Amplified Early Breast Cancer.

To evaluate whether pathologic complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant trastuzumab is dependent on the level of HER2 amplification. 114 HER2-overexpressing early breast cancer patients who had received neoadjuvant trastuzumab were included in this study. Absolute HER2 and chromosome 17 centromere (CEP17) were measured by hybridization analysis, and associations were examined between HER2/CEP17 ratio and tumor pCR status (commonly defined by ypT0 ypN0, ypT0/is ypN0, and ypT0/is).

Austrian recommendations for the management of primary myelofibrosis, post-polycythemia vera myelofibrosis and post-essential thrombocythemia myelofibrosis: an expert statement.

The entity "myelofibrosis" represents a subgroup of the Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms. It comprises primary myelofibrosis, post-polycythemia vera myelofibrosis and post-essential thrombocythemia myelofibrosis. This heterogeneous disease is characterized by clonal myeloproliferation, dysregulated kinase signalling and the abnormal expression of several proinflammatory cytokines.

Gamma-glutamyltransferase as novel biomarker in patients with uterine leiomyosarcoma.

Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) is an established marker for proliferative/apoptotic balance and has been associated with cancer risk and prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of pre-treatment GGT serum levels as prognostic biomarker in patients with primary uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS). Data of women with ULMS were extracted from a multi-center database.

Background: Chemoimmunotherapy containing rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (R-CHOP) is the standard treatment for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Doxorubicin may induce early and late cardiotoxicity. Non-pegylated liposomal (NPL) doxorubicin may reduce cardiotoxicity.

The Prognostic Value of C-Reactive Protein Serum Levels in Patients with Uterine Leiomyosarcoma.

Objective: C-reactive protein (CRP) has previously been shown to serve as a prognostic parameter in women with gynecologic malignancies. Due to the lack of valid prognostic markers for uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS) this study set out to investigate the value of pre-treatment CRP serum levels as prognostic parameter.

Methods: Data of women with ULMS were extracted from databases of three Austrian centres for gynaecologic oncology.

Medial tumor localization in breast cancer--an unappreciated risk factor?

Purpose: To demonstrate the unfavorable results in survival rates in patients with medial breast cancer compared to patients with laterally located tumors of the mammary gland.

Patients And Methods: Between 1984 and 1995, 1,089 patients presenting with a total of 1,100 pT1-2 invasive carcinomas of the breast were treated at the authors' institution. 707 presented with tumors in the lateral quadrants, 294 with tumors in the medial quadrants, and 99 with tumors in the central quadrant.

Local relapse after breast-conserving surgery and radiotherapy: effects on survival parameters.

Purpose: This retrospective analysis of 1,610 women treated for breast cancer and 88 patients with local relapse aims to show the poor survival parameters after local failure and to evaluate risk factors and compare them with other studies and analyses published.

Patients And Methods: Between 1984 and 1997, 1,610 patients presenting with a total of 1,635 pT1-2 invasive and noninvasive carcinomas of the breast were treated at the authors' institution. The mean age was 57.

Breast cancer: primary treatment with external-beam radiation therapy and high-dose-rate iridium implantation.

Purpose: To evaluate a treatment for breast cancer and to demonstrate the safe use of iridium-192 high-dose-rate (HDR) implantations.

Materials And Methods: In December 1984, the authors began to use HDR Ir-192 brachytherapy to deliver an interstitial boost to the primary site in conservative breast cancer treatment. By December 1989, 212 patients with 216 tumors were treated with external-beam irradiation of 45-50 Gy to the whole breast, which was followed by an interstitial 10-Gy boost.

Case report: salvage fractionated high dose rate after-loading brachytherapy in the treatment of a recurrent tumour in the middle ear.

Re-irradiation of previously irradiated head and neck sites is associated with a high complication rate. In an attempt to reduce this complication risk, multiple fractions of high dose rate (HDR) intracavitary irradiation were used in a young patient who had developed recurrent transitional cell carcinoma in the tympanic cavity one year after radical radiotherapy. After gross surgical removal of the tumour, an afterloading probe was placed into the middle ear by a surgical approach.
