In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), and neuromuscular junction disorders, three mechanisms may lead, singly or together, to respiratory emergencies and increase the disease burden and mortality: (i) reduced strength of diaphragm and accessory muscles; (ii) oropharyngeal dysfunction with possible aspiration of saliva/bronchial secretions/drink/food; and (iii) inefficient cough due to weakness of abdominal muscles. Breathing deficits may occur at onset or more often along the chronic course of the disease. Symptoms and signs are dyspnea on minor exertion, orthopnea, nocturnal awakenings, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, morning headache, poor concentration, and difficulty in clearing bronchial secretions.

However, it is often difficult to access these networks due to fragmentation of patient care and treatment burden. Care coordination aims to ensure patients have a central role and that there is continuity of care among various levels and professionals involved.

Background: While lung ultrasonography (LUS) has utility for the evaluation of the acute phase of COVID-19 related lung disease, its role in long-term follow-up of this condition has not been well described. The objective of this study is to compare LUS and chest computed tomography (CT) results in COVID-19 survivors with the intent of defining the utility of LUS for long-term follow-up of COVID-19 respiratory disease.
Methods: Prospective observational study that enrolled consecutive survivors of COVID-19 with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (HARF) admitted to the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit.

Pericytes are integral part of neurovascular unit and play a role in the maintenance of blood-brain barrier integrity, angiogenesis, and cerebral blood flow regulation. Despite their important functional roles, a univocal phenotypic identification is still emerging also for the lack of a "pan-pericyte" marker. In the present study, we describe in detail the method for performing fluorescence immunohistochemistry on thick free-floating sections from human fetal brain in high resolution laser confocal microscopy.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) disorders are caused by deficiencies in lysosomal enzymes, leading to impaired glycosaminoglycan (GAG) degradation. The resulting GAG accumulation in cells and connective tissues ultimately results in widespread tissue and organ dysfunction. The seven MPS types currently described are heterogeneous and progressive disorders, with somatic and neurological manifestations depending on the type of accumulating GAG.

Annexin A1 is a potent anti-inflammatory molecule that has been extensively studied in the peripheral immune system, but has not as yet been exploited as a therapeutic target/agent. In the last decade, we have undertaken the study of this molecule in the central nervous system (CNS), focusing particularly on the primary interface between the peripheral body and CNS: the blood-brain barrier. In this review, we provide an overview of the role of this molecule in the brain, with a particular emphasis on its functions in the endothelium of the blood-brain barrier, and the protective actions the molecule may exert in neuroinflammatory, neurovascular and metabolic disease.

Cholesterol gallstone disease is one of the most prevalent and the most costly digestive diseases in Western countries. Its pathogenesis is a complex paradigm resulting from the interaction of genetic factors, hepatic hypersecretion of cholesterol, increased intestinal absorption of cholesterol, a constantly "supersaturated" bile, crystallization of biliary cholesterol, and gallbladder stasis. De novo cholesterol biosynthesis, biliary cholesterol output, and intestinal cholesterol absorption are therefore key steps involved in cholesterol homeostasis.
