Children became sick and died during pandemics roughly 100 years apart, but they are rarely the central focus of historical scholarship. Because children were not the largest group of victims in the 1918 pandemic or in the COVID-19 pandemic and because of their lack of political capital, their needs received little attention. Both pandemics exposed the many holes in the nation's health and welfare infrastructure.

Ten years ago, in response to the growing discussions, a seminal report, The Research-Focused Doctoral Program in Nursing -Pathways to Excellence was endorsed by AACN members. A re-envisioning of PhD programs is urgently needed to ensure the advancement of nursing science and to situate research focused nursing PhD graduates for success - in academia and beyond. 'I Am a Nurse': Oral Histories of African Nurses.

At the time of this writing, Barbra Mann Wall was an associate professor of nursing and the associate director of the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. She also coordinates AJN's Looking Back column. Krist Dhurmah is a nurse with the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life in Forest Side, Mauritius. Bassan Lamboni is a nursing teacher at the National School of the Medical Auxiliaries of Lome, Togo, and a research officer in Togo's National Noncommunicable Disease Program. Benson Edwinson Phiri is a nurse and an officer in the National Organization of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi in Lilongwe, Malawi. This research was supported by a Faculty Pilot Award for the African Oral History Project by the University of Pennsylvania Research Committee and the Office for Nursing Research, Philadelphia. Background: Much of African history has been written by colonial "masters" and is skewed by cultural bias. The voices of indigenous peoples have largely been ignored.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to collect the oral histories of African nursing leaders who studied and practiced nursing from the late colonial era (1950s) through decolonization and independence (1960s-70s), in order to better understand their experiences and perspectives.

The 2010 Institute of Medicine report The Future of Nursing recommended residency programs for nurses. The number of such postgraduate residencies for nurse practitioners (NPs) is increasing in community settings; still, the Institute of Medicine's recommendation departs from the tradition of direct entry into practice after the completion of a formal nursing program. Research shows that residencies support NPs' transition to practice, but very few data support their impact on patient care.
