Grup de Biotecnologia Molecular i Industrial, Department d'Enginyeria Química, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Rambla Sant Nebridi 22, España. Electronic address:

The transformation of penicillin G into nano/micro-sized spheres (nanopenicillin) using sonochemical technology was explored as a novel tool for the eradication of Gram-negative bacteria and their biofilms. Known by its effectiveness only against Gram-positive microorganisms, the penicillin G spherization boosted the inhibition of the Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa 10-fold (from 0.3 to 3.

Antibiotic resistance has prompted the search for new agents that can inhibit bacterial growth. Moreover, colonization of abiotic surfaces by microorganisms and the formation of biofilms is a major cause of infections associated with medical implants, resulting in prolonged hospitalization periods and patient mortality. In this study we describe a water-based synthesis of yttrium fluoride (YF(3)) nanoparticles (NPs) using sonochemistry.

Since the algal symbionts provide the energy basis for corals and whole reefs, their loss or impairment of function leads to widespread mortality. This phenomenon has been documented numerous times in recent years, and has extensively damaged coral reefs all over the world.
