The prognostic significance of pretransplant N-terminal pro-brain (B)-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level has not been investigated in lung transplant recipients. The electronic files of 173 patients with chronic lung disease who underwent lung transplantation in 2018-2022 at a tertiary medical center were retrospectively reviewed. Right heart catheterization (RHC) and NT-proBNP determination were performed preoperatively in all cases.

M Velma Weitz Wellness Practice, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Dr Weitz); Graduate Nursing Department, College of Nursing and Health Professions, Drexel University (Drs Bloch, Rundio, and Fisher); Department of Population Health, Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, Bar Ilan University Safed, Isreal (Dr Birati); and Department of Nursing & Public Health, School of Nursing and Health Science, The College of New Jersey (Dr Byrne). Dr Guerra, is in private practice at Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.

The aim of this anonymous online study was to explore the yoga practice of breast cancer survivors to determine if yoga dosage (frequency and duration of practice) was related to stress, anxiety, and self-reported health in female survivors. Participants were recruited from online breast cancer support groups during a 3-month period (June-September 2019). Demographic information, stage and treatment of breast cancer, and frequency of yoga participation, including a home yoga practice were reported.

Objective: Nasal obstruction is a common complaint. The Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scale (NOSE) is a reliable validated tool used to assess the quality of life of patients with nasal obstruction. The purpose of this study is to validate the Hebrew version of the NOSE scale (He-NOSE).

Heart failure (HF) is linked to to high mortality rates and recurrent hospitalisations despite medical and device-based achievements. The use of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) has improved survival among patients with advanced HF. Significant progress has been achieved with the new generation of continuous-flow devices, particularly with the fully magnetically levitated HeartMate 3.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a frequent complication in patients with cancer and a leading cause of morbidity and death.

Objectives: The objective of the RIETECAT study was to compare the long-term effectiveness and safety of enoxaparin versus dalteparin or tinzaparin for the secondary prevention of VTE in adults with active cancer.

Methods: We used the data from the multicenter, multinational RIETE registry to compare the rates of VTE recurrences, major bleeding, or death over 6 months in patients with active cancer and acute VTE using full doses of enoxaparin versus dalteparin or tinzaparin, and a multivariable Cox proportional hazard model was used to analyze the primary end point.

Mortality rates among patients suffering from acute respiratory failure remain perplexingly high despite the maintenance of blood oxygen homeostasis during ventilatory support. The biotrauma hypothesis advocates that mechanical forces from invasive ventilation trigger immunological mediators that spread systemically. Yet, how these forces elicit an immune response remains unclear.

Objectives: To characterize the fecal microbiome in newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients.

Patients And Methods: Forty-nine consecutive patients who were referred for trans rectal prostate biopsy were tested. Patients who received antibiotics 3 months prior to the biopsy, patients with history of pelvic irradiation, prostate or colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and urinary tract infection were excluded.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the survival outcomes of head and neck cancer (HNC) by socioeconomic status.

Methods: A national retrospective population-based cohort of HNC patients diagnosed in Israel between 2000 and 2017 was conducted. Site of residence and socioeconomic status were correlated with overall survival (OS), controlling for prognostic factors that included tumor site, stage, age, sex, and ethnic group.

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common and bears a major clinical impact in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We aimed to investigate the use and real-world safety of catheter ablation for AF in patients with HCM. Methods and Results We drew data from the US National Inpatient Sample to identify cases of AF ablation in HCM patients between 2003 and 2015.

Following acute myocardial infarction (MI), early and successful reperfusion is the most effective strategy for reducing infarct size and improving the clinical outcome. However, immediate restoration of blood flow to the ischemic zone results in myocardial damage, defined as "reperfusion-injury". Whereas we previously reported that TVP1022 (the S-isomer of rasagiline, FDA-approved anti-Parkinson drug) decreased infarct size 24 h post ischemia reperfusion (I/R) in rats, in this study we investigated the chronic cardioprotective efficacy of TVP1022 14 days post-I/R.

Several healthy developmental processes such as pregnancy, fetal development, and infant development include a multitude of physiological changes: weight gain, hormonal, and metabolic changes, as well as immune changes. In this review, we present an additional important factor which both influences and is affected by these physiological processes-the microbiome. We summarize the known changes in microbiota composition at a variety of body sites including gut, vagina, oral cavity, and placenta, throughout pregnancy, fetal development, and early childhood.

Recent studies have firmly established that the etiology of autism includes both genetic and environmental components. However, we are only just beginning to elucidate the environmental factors that might be involved in the development of autism, as well as the molecular mechanisms through which they function. Mounting epidemiological and biological evidence suggest that prenatal factors that induce a more activated immune state in the mother are involved in the development of autism.

Objective: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) represents a major predictor of the development of cardiovascular (CV) complications. Over-hydration (OH) is an important uremic risk factor associated with LVH and increased CV morbidity and mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. In the present study we evaluated the prevalence of sub-clinical OH (SCOH) among PD patients and its effects on left ventricular mass (LVM).

Donohue syndrome (DS) is a rare and lethal autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the insulin receptor (INSR) gene, manifesting marked insulin resistance, severe growth retardation, hypertrichosis, and characteristic dysmorphic features. We report the clinical, molecular, and biochemical characterization of three new patients with DS, and address genotype-phenotype issues playing a role in the pathophysiology of DS. A female infant born to first-degree cousins Muslim Arab parents and two brothers born to first-degree cousins Druze parents presented classical features of DS with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and died in infancy.

The genetic pleiotropy of musculoskeletal aging.

Front Physiol

October 2012

Faculty of Medicine in the Galilee, Bar-Ilan University Safed, Israel.

Musculoskeletal aging is detrimental to multiple bodily functions and starts early, probably in the fourth decade of an individual's life. Sarcopenia is a health problem that is expected to only increase as a greater portion of the population lives longer; prevalence of the related musculoskeletal diseases is similarly expected to increase. Unraveling the biological and biomechanical associations and molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases represents a formidable challenge.
