Safety and tolerability of autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells in ADPKD patients.

Background: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic ciliopathy disease characterized by progressive formation and enlargement of cysts in multiple organs. The kidneys are particularly affected and patients may eventually develop end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We hypothesize that bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BMMSCs) are renotropic and may improve kidney function via anti-apoptotic, anti-fibrotic, and anti-inflammatory effects.

FAST for blunt abdominal trauma: Correlation between positive findings and admission acid-base measurement.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine any association between positive findings in ultrasonography examination and initial BD value with regard to diagnosis of intra-abdominal bleeding following blunt abdominal trauma.

Methods: A prospective, multi-center study of consecutive adult patients was performed from April to September 2015. Demographics, initial vital signs and arterial BD were evaluated with respect to presence of any association with intra-abdominal bleeding and in-hospital mortality.

Effects of Adenotonsillectomy on Serum Levels of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 and Growth Indices in Children with Adenotonsillar Hypertrophy or Recurrent Tonsillitis.

Introduction: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) may present with growth retardation. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) mediates the anabolic effects of growth hormone (GH) on tissues. Most of the circulating IGF-1 molecules are bound to insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3).

Distal Radius Radiographic Indices and Perilunate Fracture Dislocation.

Background: Distal radius radiographic indices may play a role as risk factors in pathogenesis of Kienbock's disease, scaphoid fracture and nonunion. Perilunate fracture dislocations are devastating wrist injuries, and their relationship and distal radius indices have not been addressed in the literature.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible role of distal radius radiographic indices including radial height, radial inclination, ulnar variance and volar tilt as risk factors in the perilunate fracture dislocation injury of the wrist.

Comparing Rapid and Specific Detection of Brucella in Clinical Samples by PCR-ELISA and Multiplex-PCR Method.

Background: Rapid diagnosis and differentiation of Brucella is of high importance due to the side effects of antibiotics for the treatment of brucellosis. This study aimed to identify and compare PCR-ELISA as a more accurate diagnositc test with other common molecular and serological tests.

Methods: In this experimental and sectional study, during March 2014 to Sep 2015, 52 blood samples of suspected patients with clinical symptoms of brucellosis were evaluated in medical centers all over Iran with serum titers higher than 1:80.

Detection of Epstein-Barr virus in synovial fluid of rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common chronic inflammatory disorders. Genes and environmental factors contribute to RA. Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) has been considered as one the RA pathogeneses.

Staphylococcal Enterotoxin A Detection from Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients' Blood and Synovial Fluid.

Introduction: Direct detection of microbial super antigens in synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis may be able to guide to the design of cost-effective therapies. The purpose of this study was to assess the existence of Staphylococcal enterotoxin A (superantigen A) in the synovial fluid of patients with RA by the PCR and ELISA methods.

Methods: This experimental study was conducted on the synovial fluid of 103 RA patients from Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences' Rheumatology Clinic in Tehran, Iran in 2011-2014.

Association of Soccer and Genu Varum in Adolescents.

Background: Genu varum is a physical deformity marked by bowing of the leg. One of the risk factors of this musculoskeletal alignment is stress on the knee joint such as with exercise.

Objectives: Since the evaluation of genu varum has not been widely studies, this study was conducted to examine the association between genu varum and playing soccer.

Downregulation of microRNA-217 and microRNA-646 acts as potential predictor biomarkers in progression, metastasis, and unfavorable prognosis of human osteosarcoma.

Despite the progress in therapeutic targets, it remains dissatisfactory for most osteosarcoma patients with metastasis or recurrence osteosarcoma. Therefore, it is required to determine the involved mechanisms of osteosarcoma. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression level of MiR-217 and miR-646 and also their association with clinicopathological features in patients with osteosarcoma.

Treatment Outcomes of Corticosteroid Injection and Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy as Two Primary Therapeutic Methods for Acute Plantar Fasciitis: A Prospective Randomized Clinical Trial.

The outcome of corticosteroid injection (CSI) and extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) as primary treatment of acute plantar fasciitis has been debated. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate and compare the therapeutic effects of CSI and ESWT in patients with acute (<6-week duration) symptomatic plantar fasciitis. Of the 116 eligible patients, 68 were randomized to 2 equal groups of 34 patients, each undergoing either ESWT or CSI.

Complications in a series of 4400 paediatric cochlear implantation.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to retrospectively review the complications of paediatric patients undergoing cochlear implantation at four major Iranian cochlear implant centres.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed of all patients who underwent primary cochlear implantation from January 1991 to December 2013. The patients were reviewed for demographic information, and complications including cerebrospinal fluid leak, meningitis, facial palsy, and wound infection.

Magnetic resonance imaging investigations of position of conus medullaris in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis as a peripheral neuropathy.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a structural 3-dimensional deformity the spine, which is occurring between 10 years of age and skeletal maturity and it mostly affects prepuberbal girls. The etiology of AIS remains unknown and seems should be multifactorial. According to the theories, there could be a shorter spinal cord or a higher location of the conus medullaris and disproportionate growth in neuro-osseous system.

Determining compliance of ear CT scan with interaoperative findings in deaf children with cochlear implantation.

Introduction: Defecated or impaired hair cell function of the cochlea causes deafness. Cochlear implantation allows transmission of sound information through central auditory pathways using direct electric stimulation of auditory nerve dendrites. Using radiologic imaging, including CT scan is very helpful in selection of candidates and evaluation after implantation.

The Relationship between Perceived Sleep Quality, Polysomnographic Measures and Depressive Symptoms in Chemically-Injured Veterans: A Pilot Study.

An overview of travel-associated central nervous system infectious diseases: risk assessment, general considerations and future directions.

Nervous system infections are among the most important diseases in travellers. Healthy travellers might be exposed to infectious agents of central nervous system, which may require in-patient care. Progressive course is not uncommon in this family of disorders and requires swift diagnosis.

Psychometric examination of the Persian version of Osteoarthritis Knee and Hip Quality of Life questionnaire.

Aim: Osteoarthritis is a serious and prevalent health problem that creates considerable disability when it involves the knee or hip joints. The aim of the study was to adapt and validate the Osteoarthritis Knee and Hip Quality of Life (OAKHQOL) questionnaire for use in a Persian-speaking population.

Methods: A total of 434 patients were recruited.

Aim: We aimed to determine spinopelvic balance in 8-19-year-old-people in order to assess pelvic and spinal parameters in sagittal view.

Methods: Ninety-eight healthy students aged 8-19 years, who lived in the central parts of Tehran, were assessed. Demographic data, history of present and past diseases, height (cm), and weight (kg) were collected.

The effect of systemic arterial-line leukocyte filtration on the outcome of adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Background: It is known that cardiopulmonary bypass causes an inflammatory reaction with associated morbidity and mortality. Several anti-inflammatory strategies have been implemented to reduce this response, including leukocyte removal from the circulation using specialized filters.

Objectives: The aim of this randomized clinical study was to assess the impact of arterial-line systemic leukocyte filtration on the postoperative outcome of adult patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery.

Cost-effectiveness analysis of adding low dose ribavirin to peginterferon alfa-2a for treatment of chronic hepatitis C infected thalassemia major patients in iran.

Background: The prevalence of hepatitis C in Iran is 1% and 18% in general population and thalassemia patients respectively. The cost effectiveness analysis of adding Ribavirin to Peginterferon alfa-2a (PEG IFN alfa-2a) as a combination treatment strategy of chronic hepatitis C in thalassemia patients in comparison with monotherapy could help clinicians and policy makers to provide the best treatment for the patients.

Objectives: In this study we aimed to assess whether adding Ribavirin to PEG IFN alfa-2a is a cost effective strategy in different genotypes and different subgroups of 280 patients with chronic hepatitis C infection from the perspective of society in Iranian setting.

Bone marrow involvement by lymphoproliferative disorders post liver transplantation: PTLD Int Survey.

Aim: to analyze cases of BM PTLD in liver transplant recipients to find any specific predictor or prognostic factor associated with this disease localization.

Methods: a comprehensive search of the existing literature was performed, and 173 liver recipients who had developed PTLD in their post transplant course from 19 studies were found and enrolled into analysis. 36 of the patients were BM PTLD cases and the remaining was used as controls.

Fracture of the alumina-bearing couple delta ceramic liner.

The fracture rate of third-generation ceramic liners is greatly reduced compared with first- and second-generation liners because of improvements in the design and manufacturing process. Fractures of the alumina-bearing couple are rare for the same reason.This article describes a case of a fracture of an alumina-bearing couple delta ceramic liner without trauma history that was treated with ceramic-on-polyethylene revision total hip arthroplasty.

Assessment of quality of life in a single-center transplantation population using the Kidney Transplant Questionnaire-25 questionnaire.

Background: The Kidney Transplant Questionnaire (KTQ) is a quality-of-life instrument designed specifically for renal transplant recipients.

Aim: The purpose of this work was to evaluate the validity and reliability of a Persian translation of the KTQ-25 questionnaire as a tool for use in Iran and also to compare the quality of life between dialysis and transplant patients.

Method: We collected 143 subjects in a cross-sectional study.

Old male living renal transplant recipients more likely to be at risk for colorectal cancer.

Background: The development of posttransplant malignancy is a well-recognized complication of kidney transplantation due to immunosuppressive therapy. The literature on colorectal malignancy in living renal transplant recipients are limited; most of the data have been collected from deceased donor cases. As living kidney donation is now growing, we sought to define the characteristics and pattern of gastrointestinal malignancy among this group.
