BACKGROUND Except for neonates, streptococci other than Streptococcus pneumoniae are a rare cause of acute bacterial meningitis. Streptococcus constellatus is a member of the Streptococcus anginosus group of gram-positive streptococci. It is a commensal microbe of the mucosae of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and urogenital tract.

Angioedema is a condition characterized by non-pitting swelling of the subcutaneous or submucosal tissues in particular the face, lips, and oral cavity. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are known to contribute to the development of angioedema by increasing the levels of bradykinin and its active metabolites. Infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is hypothesized to contribute to the development of angioedema by modifying ACE II levels and further increasing the level of bradykinin in patients taking ACE inhibitors.

Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) is the first-line treatment for patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). However, some patients with CTEPH are considered inoperable, and in the last decade, balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) has emerged as a viable therapeutic option for these patients with prohibitive surgical risk or recurrent pulmonary hypertension following PEA. Numerous international centers have increased their procedural volume of BPA and have reported improvements in pulmonary hemodynamics, patient functional class and right ventricular function.

Thoracic hernias are characterized by the protrusion of the thoracic contents outside their normal anatomical confines. This case involves a left pleural effusion secondary to a spontaneous lung intercostal hernia (SLIH) in a 52-year-old male. Imaging revealed herniated pleural fluid in the intercostal space.

Two Interventions on Pathologic Nodal Staging in a Population-Based Lung Cancer Resection Cohort.

Background: Despite its prognostic importance, poor pathologic nodal staging of lung cancer prevails. We evaluated the impact of 2 interventions to improve pathologic nodal staging.

Methods: We implemented a lymph node specimen collection kit to improve intraoperative lymph node collection (surgical intervention) and a novel gross dissection method for intrapulmonary node retrieval (pathology intervention) in nonrandomized stepped-wedge fashion, involving 12 hospitals and 7 pathology groups.

Methods: From January 1, 2014, to August 28, 2018, we implemented the kit in three homogeneous institutional cohorts involving 11 eligible hospitals from four contiguous hospital referral regions.

Surveys have shown that current electronic health record (EHR) systems may lack functionality for safe and optimal delivery of PN. A gap analysis was performed by a multihospital system to identify opportunities to enhance the current PN process using the EHR utilized by the organization.

Background: Transitioning a patient from the hospital to home is an area of vulnerability for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Patients with COPD frequently readmit as they often do not understand their disease state, medications or when to seek medical attention.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to determine the impact that pharmacist-led education has on a patient's understanding of their disease state by assessing the results of the Lung Information Needs Questionnaire (LINQ).
