Clin Transl Med

August 2023

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB), Karolinska Institutet, Biomedicum, Stockholm, Sweden.

Messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines are a relatively new class of vaccines that have shown great promise in the immunotherapy of a wide variety of infectious diseases and cancer. In the past 2 years, SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines have contributed tremendously against SARS-CoV2, which has prompted the arrival of the mRNA vaccine research boom, especially in the research of cancer vaccines. Compared with conventional cancer vaccines, mRNA vaccines have significant advantages, including efficient production of protective immune responses, relatively low side effects and lower cost of acquisition.

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most prevalent gynecologic malignant tumors with a poor prognosis and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. In recent years, it has been shown that long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) plays an important role in the development of breast cancer (BC). An antisense lncRNA from the MCF2 cell line (MCF2L-AS1) has been discovered recently and has been shown to function in a variety of malignancies.

Background: D-Dimer and fibrinogen were commonly used to detect the coagulation and fibrinolytic function, but D-dimer to fibrinogen ratio (DFR) in carotid plaque in young patients aged 18-45 with acute cerebral infarction (ACI) has not been used clinically. In this work, we focused on the evaluation of the DFR value of this group of patients and analyzed its possible correlation.

Methods: A total of 164 patients with ACI patients aged 18-45 were selected as research subjects after their first admission.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common liver cancer, known for high mortality rates and poor treatment outcomes.
  • Baicalein, a flavonoid derived from *Scutellaria baicalensis*, shows anti-cancer effects by inhibiting cell growth and promoting cell death in HCC cells through its impact on microRNA (miR)-3,178 and HDAC10.
  • The study suggests that baicalein’s regulation of the miR-3,178/HDAC10 pathway may offer a new approach for HCC treatment.

Objective: Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) have been reported to be related to atherosclerosis. The relationship between PLR, NLR, and carotid atherosclerotic plaque in young patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes has not been clinically reported. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between PLR, NLR, and carotid plaques in young patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

Low Radiation X-rays: Benefiting People Globally by Reducing Cancer Risks.

Int J Med Sci

September 2021

Institute of Integrative Medicine, Shaanxi University of Chinese Medicine, Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, P. R. China, 712046.

Article Synopsis
  • Modern medical imaging is crucial for diagnosing and treating diseases, but many overlook the dangers of radiation exposure, which can increase cancer risks.
  • Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) patients are particularly vulnerable due to frequent imaging, leading to higher cumulative radiation doses that could be minimized.
  • Low or zero radiation imaging techniques, such as switching from anterior-posterior to posterior-anterior radiographs, can significantly lower risks for AIS patients while maintaining diagnostic quality.

Background: We aimed to develop and validate a nomogram for predicting the disease-specific survival of Ewing sarcoma (ES) patients.

Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program database was used to identify ES from 1990 to 2015, in which the data was extracted from 18 registries in the US. Multivariate analysis performed using Cox proportional hazards regression models was performed on the training set to identify independent prognostic factors and construct a nomogram for the prediction of the 3-, 5-, and 10-year survival rates of patients with ES.
