Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the changes in deep venous thrombosis (DVT) occurrence in patients with spinal cord injuries and cervical fractures during the perioperative period, while identifying risk factors for worsened or new DVT post-surgery.
  • A total of 232 patients were reviewed from January 2018 to December 2023, with ultrasonography conducted before and after surgery to categorize DVT changes, leading to the identification of 53 patients (22.8%) who had either new or aggravated DVT post-operation.
  • Key risk factors for postoperative DVT exacerbation included age, ASIA score, duration from injury to surgery, surgery duration, and blood loss, suggesting a significant risk for these patients post-surgery.

  • The study investigates the biomechanical advantages of the Femoral Neck System (FNS) compared to Cannulated cancellous screws (CSS) for treating osteoporotic femoral neck fractures due to inconclusive findings in existing literature.
  • Finite element analysis was used to model different fixation systems (CSS, FNS, and modified FNS) under static loads, revealing that all systems showed increased deformation and stress in osteoporotic conditions, with modified FNS performing the best.
  • The results indicated that while FNS alone may not offer immediate superiority, the modified FNS provides enhanced stability in osteoporotic patients, suggesting a need for further investigation into optimizing treatments for this demographic.

Dihydroartemisinin (DHA), an artemisinin derivative, can influence certain malignancies' inflammatory response and growth. This study used Cell Counting Kit-8 and Transwell assays to show that DHA suppressed the growth, migration, and invasion of medullary thyroid cancer cells. Furthermore, the authors used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Western blotting, and immunofluorescence to confirm the expression of the transcriptional coactivators Yes-associated protein (YAP)/transcriptional coactivator with a PDZ-binding domain (TAZ) downstream of the Hippo pathway and changes in the expression of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process markers E-cadherin and N-cadherin.

Chronic kidney disease has become a significant global health issue, with some individuals progressing to endstage renal disease (ESRD) and requiring renal replacement therapy. For ESRD patients undergoing haemodialysis, the first step is to establish vascular access. In emergency situations, inserting a haemodialysis catheter (HDC) into the central vein is often the most appropriate approach; the right internal jugular vein (IJV) is considered the optimal site for catheterisation.

  • The study aimed to explore how different measures of kidney function (eGFRcys and eGFRcr) influence the risk of heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes.
  • It involved nearly 8,000 patients and categorized them into three groups based on the difference in their eGFR readings, assessing the relationship with new heart failure cases.
  • Results showed that patients with negative eGFR differences had a significantly higher risk of heart failure compared to those with midrange differences, whereas those with positive differences had a lower risk, indicating the importance of eGFR in predicting heart-related outcomes in diabetes patients.

  • The study looked at how vision changes and the small structures in the eye (macula) are connected in patients with severe nearsightedness who had eye surgery for retinal detachment.
  • Fifty-eight patients were tested before and three months after their surgery to check their vision and the condition of their eye structures.
  • The results showed that many patients had changes in their eye structures after surgery, which affected their vision more than those without changes, suggesting that doctors can use these findings to help improve treatment.

Cerebrovascular disease, one of the high-risk diseases worldwide, is high in morbidity, disability, mortality, and recurrence rates, which brings many harms to human beings such as physical and mental harm, economic losses, and impairment of social relations. Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) is one of the most common pathological manifestations, with mild hypothermia therapy being the most commonly used treatment in clinical practice. In this study, the research team established a CIRI animal model and found that the neuronal apoptosis rate was significantly increased, accompanied by significant ferroptosis, increased inflammation and oxidative stress damage in brain tissue, and obviously inhibited SIRT1/AMPK pathway.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are both considered independent risk factors for hypertension, which can lead to an increase in cardiovascular disease incidence and mortality. Clinical studies have found a bidirectional relationship between OSA and PA. However, the underlying mechanism between them is not yet clear.

Autogenous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is considered the preferred vascular access choice for individuals undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) and is widely utilized in China, as reported by the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study. Despite its popularity, the significant incidence of poor AVF maturation often leads to the need for central venous catheter insertion, increasing the risk of complications like superior vena cava stenosis and catheter-related infections, which in turn raises the overall mortality risk. With the prevalence of diabetes rising globally among the elderly and diabetic kidney disease being a leading cause of end-stage renal disease necessitating renal replacement therapy, our retrospective review aims to explore the various factors affecting AVF maturation in this specific patient population.

Int Immunopharmacol

October 2024

Department of Endodontics, Stomatological Hospital, School of Stomatology, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • High-concentration fluoride treatment, a common method for preventing dental decay, may negatively impact periodontal health by aggravating bone loss and tissue destruction in patients with periodontitis.
  • The study found that sodium fluoride (NaF) enhances M1 macrophage polarization and promotes glycolysis in these immune cells, contributing to the worsening of periodontal conditions.
  • These findings highlight the importance of understanding NaF's effects on immune processes, suggesting that while fluoride is beneficial for dental care, it may have adverse implications for periodontal health and should be used cautiously in affected individuals.

Autologous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a commonly used vascular access (VA) for hemodialysis, and hemodynamic changes are one of the main factors for its failure. To explore the effect of geometry on the hemodynamics in the AVF, a modified model is built with a gradual and smooth turn at the anastomosis and is compared with the traditional model, which has an abrupt sharp turn at the anastomisis. Transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed for the comparison and analysis of the hemodynamic fields of the two models at different stages of the pulse cycle.
