Background: Endoscopic thyroidectomy (ET) offers superior cosmetic outcomes compared to traditional open thyroidectomy but is associated with higher postoperative drainage volumes (DV) and potential complications. Although ET via the areola approach (ETAA) has been used, the factors influencing DV after ETAA remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to identify clinical parameters that can objectively evaluate the factors influencing drainage volume after ETAA.

Primary hepatic carcinoma, comprising hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), and combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA), ranks among the most common malignancies worldwide. The heterogeneity of tumors is a primary factor impeding the efficacy of treatments for primary hepatic carcinoma. Immunohistochemical markers may play a potential role in characterizing this heterogeneity, providing significant guidance for prognostic analysis and the development of personalized treatment plans for the patients with primary hepatic carcinoma.

A highly stretchable smart dressing for wound infection monitoring and treatment.

Mater Today Bio

June 2024

Research Center for Human Tissue and Organs Degeneration, Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenzhen 518055, China.

Smart dressings integrated with bioelectronics have attracted considerable attention and become promising solutions for skin wound management. However, due to the mechanical distinction between human body and the interface of electronics, previous smart dressings often suffered obvious degradation in electrical performance when attached to the soft and curvilinear wound sites. Here, we report a stretchable dressing integrated with temperature and pH sensor for wound status monitoring, as well as an electrically controlled drug delivery system for infection treatment.

Introduction: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a chronic disease with treatment-free remission (TFR) increasingly regarded as a feasible goal of treatment. However, various factors may influence adherence to international guidelines for CML management. This study aimed to compare the reporting of care between patients with CML and their treating doctors.

The role of GLUT2 in glucose metabolism in multiple organs and tissues.

Mol Biol Rep

August 2023

Key Laboratory of Emergency Medicine, Lanzhou University Second Hospital, Lanzhou, 730000, China.

The glucose transporter family has an important role in the initial stage of glucose metabolism; Glucose transporters 2 (GLUTs, encoded by the solute carrier family 2, SLC2A genes) is the major glucose transporter in β-cells of pancreatic islets and hepatocytes but is also expressed in the small intestine, kidneys, and central nervous system; GLUT2 has a relatively low affinity to glucose. Under physiological conditions, GLUT2 transports glucose into cells and allows the glucose concentration to reach balance on the bilateral sides of the cellular membrane; Variation of GLUT2 is associated with various endocrine and metabolic disorders; In this study, we discussed the role of GLUT2 in participating in glucose metabolism and regulation in multiple organs and tissues and its effects on maintaining glucose homeostasis.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public health problem, and cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in patients with CKD. The incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular events during the early stages of CKD increases significantly with a decline in renal function. More than 50% of dialysis patients die from cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmia, and sudden cardiac death.

Tibial cortex transverse transport accelerates wound healing via enhanced angiogenesis and immunomodulation.

Bone Joint Res

April 2022

Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology, Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine Laboratory, Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong, China.

Aims: Treatment for delayed wound healing resulting from peripheral vascular diseases and diabetic foot ulcers remains a challenge. A novel surgical technique named 'tibial cortex transverse transport' (TTT) has been developed for treating peripheral ischaemia, with encouraging clinical effects. However, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

Introduction: Hypertension patients often suffered from insomnia problems which lowered the quality of life. Studies have shown that acupuncture is effective to treat perimenopausal and cancer-related insomnia. However, there is a lack of randomized controlled trials to support the effectiveness of acupuncture on insomnia of hypertension patients.

Patients with rhabdomyolysis (RM) following exertional heatstroke (EHS) are often accompanied by dysfunction of coagulation and acute kidney injury (AKI). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between D-dimer and AKI in patients with RM following EHS. A retrospective study was performed on patients with EHS admitted to the intensive care unit over 10-year.

Asthenozoospermia is detected in 40% of infertile men, and characterised by low sperm motility. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play essential roles in spermatogenesis, but little is known regarding the function of seminal plasma miRNAs in asthenozoospermia. In this study, we collected seminal plasma samples from patients with asthenospermia and healthy men and employed high-throughput sequence technology to identify differentially expressed miRNAs.

Hybrid AI-assistive diagnostic model permits rapid TBS classification of cervical liquid-based thin-layer cell smears.

Nat Commun

June 2021

Department of Pathology, Nanfang Hospital and Basic Medical College, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, PR China.

Technical advancements significantly improve earlier diagnosis of cervical cancer, but accurate diagnosis is still difficult due to various factors. We develop an artificial intelligence assistive diagnostic solution, AIATBS, to improve cervical liquid-based thin-layer cell smear diagnosis according to clinical TBS criteria. We train AIATBS with >81,000 retrospective samples.

Slit2 is a member of the Slit family of secreted glycoproteins that plays highly conserved roles in neuronal axon guidance and cellular migration. Our previous experimental results showed Alzheimer's disease-like alterations and increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier in Slit2-overexpressing transgenic (Slit2-Tg) mice aged 8-9 months. Nevertheless, relatively little is known about behavioral alterations in adult Slit2-Tg mice (2-6 months of age).

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted using high-resolution MRI to compare vessel wall characteristics of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) in patients with and without symptoms related to atherosclerosis.
  • Fifty-three patients were analyzed, revealing that those with symptoms had significantly higher plaque burden, more severe stenosis, and a lower remodeling index compared to asymptomatic patients.
  • The findings suggest that certain plaque features, like more severe stenosis and negative remodeling, are more prevalent in symptomatic patients, indicating a potential risk factor for further complications.
