Indications, Clinical Utility, and Safety of Bronchoscopy in COVID-19.

Background: Bronchoscopy is an aerosol-generating procedure and routine use for patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been discouraged. The purpose of this review was to discuss the indications, clinical utility, and risks associated with bronchoscopy in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pneumonia.

Methods: A literature search was performed by using appropriate key terms to identify all relevant articles from medical literature databases up to August 1, 2021.

A case of acute encephalopathy and non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction following mRNA-1273 vaccination: possible adverse effect?

A 77-year-old man with a past medical history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, peripheral neuropathy, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was admitted to the intensive care unit of Bangladesh Medical College Hospital with acute encephalopathy and non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). The patient was on antidiabetic medicine along with H blocker and multivitamins for his existing diseases. The patient's attendant reported that the patient had received his first dose of the Moderna coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine just 2 days ago.

Osteoporosis, an Inevitable Circumstance of Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review.

Mediterranean Diet and Physical Activity: Two Imperative Components in Breast Cancer Prevention.

Despite tremendous advances in medicine over the past few decades and significantly improved understanding of the symptomology and contributors to breast cancer (BC) incidence, BC rates continue to rise worldwide, with BC being a leading cause of cancer-related death among women. To reduce BC incidence, it is necessary to focus on promoting prevention strategies through a population-based approach of lowering exposure to modifiable risk factors in addition to the application of newer drug interventions (chemoprevention) for prevention in high-risk populations. Currently, available data suggest that lifestyle modifications through a healthy diet and increased physical activity (PA) play a crucial role in BC prevention; specifically, there is growing evidence to indicate that the Mediterranean diet (MeD) lowers cancer risk.

Bronchoscopy is a safe and commonly performed procedure for diagnostic as well as therapeutic indications. Bronchoscopy is also an aerosol-generating procedure, and due to the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 transmission during the procedure, routine bronchoscopy has been discouraged by multiple professional societies, despite any solid evidence. There are only a few reports of bronchoscopy in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 in the literature.

Utilization of Left Ventricular Assist Device for Congestive Heart Failure: Inputs on Demographic and Hospital Characterization From Nationwide Inpatient Sample.

Objectives The first goal of the study is to provide a descriptive overview of the utilization of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) for the treatment of congestive heart failure (CHF) and determine the rates of LVAD use stratified by patients' demographic and hospitals' characteristics in the United States. Next, is to measure the hospitalization outcomes of length of stay (LOS) and cost in inpatients managed with LVAD. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study using the nationwide inpatient sample and included 184,115 patients (age ≥65 years) with a primary discharge diagnosis of hypertensive and non-hypertensive CHF and was further classified by inpatients who were managed with LVAD.

Incidence and Predictors of In-Hospital Mortality Among Diabetics Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.

Objectives The main goals of this study are to delineate the differences in demographics, comorbidities and hospital outcomes between diabetic and non-diabetic aortic stenosis (AS) patients, and next is to evaluate the predictors of in-hospital mortality in AS patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Methods We conducted an observational cross-sectional study using the nationwide inpatient sample (NIS) and included 33,325 adult patients with a primary discharge diagnosis of AS who underwent TAVR during the hospitalization. This sample was further grouped by comorbid diabetic which include non-diabetics (N = 23,585) versus diabetic patients (N = 9,740).

Substance Use Disorders in Patients With Parkinson's Disease and Adverse Hospitalization Outcomes: A National Inpatient Study.

Objectives To understand the demographic pattern of substance use disorders (SUD) in Parkinson's disease (PD) inpatients and to evaluate the impact of SUD on hospitalization outcomes including the severity of illness, length of stay (LOS), total charges, and disposition to nursing facilities. Methods We used the nationwide inpatient sample and identified adult patients (age, ≥40 years) with PD as a primary diagnosis and comorbid SUD (N = 959) and grouped by co-diagnosis of alcohol (N = 789), cannabis (N = 46), opioid (N = 30), stimulants (N = 54) and barbiturate (N = 40) use disorders. We used a binomial logistic regression model to evaluate the odds ratio (OR) for major loss of functioning and disposition to nursing facilities in PD inpatients.

Detection of Anti-Nucleocapsid Antibody in COVID-19 Patients in Bangladesh Is not Correlated with Previous Dengue Infection.

Background: The assessment of antibody responses to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 is potentially confounded by exposures to flaviviruses. The aims of the present research were to determine whether anti-dengue antibodies affect the viral load and the detection of anti-coronavirus nucleocapsid (N)-protein antibodies in coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Bangladesh.

Methods: Viral RNA was evaluated in swab specimens from 115 COVID-19 patients by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rT-PCR).

A Novel Multiplex RT-PCR Assay for Simultaneous Detection of Dengue and Chikungunya Viruses.

The goal of the study was to develop a specific, sensitive, and cost-effective molecular RT-PCR diagnostic assay for the rapid and simultaneous detection of the serotypes of dengue virus (DENV) and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) from sera of suspected febrile patients. A single-tube, single-step multiplex RT-PCR (mRT-PCR) assay was designed for the detection of viral genomes from clinical and field samples. Specificity and sensitivity of the mRT-PCR assay were evaluated against six different combinations using two reverse transcriptases (AMV-RT and RT-Ace) and three DNA polymerases (LA-Taq, rTaq, and Tth).

'POLIDON' Approach-A Novel Solution for the ENT & Skull Base Surgeons in COVID-19 era.

Health care providers (HCP) of ENT and Skull base surgery are highly vulnerable and mostly infected by novel coronavirus as they have to examine and perform procedures directly in oral cavity, oropharynx, nose, nasopharynx, where coronavirus remains in plenty. ENT & Skull base surgeons need to do several aerosol generating procedures (AGP). Most of the endoscopic and microscopic ENT & skull base surgery are AGP; like-mastoid surgery, sinus surgery, surgery of pituitary, tympanomastoid paraganglioma, temporal bone malignancy, tracheostomy etc.

Prenatal Diagnosis and Screening of Thalassemia Mutations in Bangladesh: Presence of Rare Mutations.

Thalassemia is the most common congenital monogenic disorder in Bangladesh. Prenatal diagnosis (PND) and pregnation termination of an affected child is one of the best options to reduce the burden of thalassemic children. This article reports the results of DNA analyses of chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis of fetuses of mothers who came to the thalassemia center of Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Avoiding predatory publishing for early career neurosurgeons: what should you know before you submit?

Background: Scientific research can offer the joy of discovery. For many graduating neurosurgeons, often, a seminar, class, or instructional module is their first and only formal exposure to the world of conducting research responsibly, to write down and report the results of such research. The pressure to publish scientific research is high, but any young neurosurgeon who is unaware of how predatory publishers operate can get duped by it and can lose their valuable and hard-fought research.

Intestinal Alkaline Phosphatase Deficiency Is Associated with Ischemic Heart Disease.

Background: We have previously shown that the deficiency of the gut enzyme intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in humans, and mice deficient in IAP develop the metabolic syndrome, a precipitant of T2DM and ischemic heart disease (IHD). We hypothesized that IAP deficiency might also be associated with IHD in humans. We aimed to determine the correlation between the IAP level and IHD in humans.
