Vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) has proven to be the most effective measure to prevent the spread and reduce infection severity. A case report of de novo membranous nephropathy (MN) following immunization with inactivated virus vaccine (CoronaVac, Sinovac Biotech) is presented here. A 53-year-old man presented with a sudden onset of leg edema a week after receiving an inactivated virus vaccine and a relapse of nephrotic syndrome (NS) with acute kidney injury (AKI) after a booster dose.

We evaluated the effects of the mixing speed of hand-mixed bone cement and the different phases of antibiotic mixing on the elution, mechanical properties, and porosity of antibiotic-loaded bone cement. Vancomycin-loaded Palacos LV bone cement was prepared at two hand-mixing speeds, normal and high-speed, and with antibiotic addition during three phases (directly mixing with the PMMA powder, in the liquid phase, and in the dough phase). The cumulative antibiotic elution over 15 days in the high-speed group was increased by 24% compared with the normal-speed group (P < 0.

Previous studies suggest that treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with epilepsy can improve seizure control. We investigated the effect of positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy on seizures in adults with epilepsy referred to the Cleveland Clinic for polysomnography (PSG) from 1997 to 2010. Seizure outcome at baseline and 1 year later was compared in patients with no OSA (apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] <5), patients with PAP-treated OSA, and patients with untreated OSA.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is highly prevalent, affecting 25% of men and 10% of women. We recently reported a prevalence of OSA of 30% among 130 adults with epilepsy unselected for sleep disorder complaints, including 16% with moderate-to-severe disease, rates that markedly exceed general population estimates. Treatment of OSA with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy or upper airway surgery reduces seizures in many cases.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the importance of exercise capacity in patients with ischemic left ventricular dysfunction who are candidates for coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG).
  • It found that patients who could walk at least 300 meters or had a higher Physical Ability Score (PAS) had lower mortality rates after CABG compared to medical management.
  • However, those with poor exercise capacity, unable to walk 300 meters or with a low PAS, faced higher early risks and showed no significant long-term benefit from CABG compared to medical therapy.

Alterations in speech and voice in patients with mucopolysaccharidoses.

Logoped Phoniatr Vocol

April 2014

Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, Bangkok Hospital Group, and Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University, Bangkok , Thailand.

The mucopolysaccharidoses are a group of lysosomal disorders characterized by abnormal accumulation of glycosaminoglycans within cell lysosomes leading to a variety of signs and symptoms including alterations in speech and voice production. These changes were analysed in 44 patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) types I, II, and VI using standardized protocols. Compared to healthy individuals the diadochokinetic rate for the fast repetition of syllables was slower and more irregular, the voice-onset time for the voiceless consonant /p/ was shorter, and most patients had a hoarse voice.
