NK cells - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in autoimmune rheumatic diseases.

Int Immunopharmacol

June 2022

Non-Communicable Diseases Research Center, Alborz University of Medical Sciences, Karaj, Iran; Department of Immunology, School of Medicine, Alborz University of Medical Sciences, Karaj, Iran. Electronic address:

Natural killer (NK) cells belong to innate immune system that are large granular lymphocytes differentiating from the common lymphoid progenitors. These cells were first identified by their functional response against tumor cells and virus-infected cells. That notwithstanding, NK cells are able to affect both adaptive and innate immune arms and modulate a wide range of immune cells.

Background And Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of propolis and melatonin supplementation on inflammation, clinical outcomes, and oxidative stress markers in patients with primary pneumosepsis.

Materials And Methods: This pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted on 55 patients with primary pneumosepsis who were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups. In the three intervention groups, the patients received propolis alone (1,000 mg/day), propolis (1,000 mg/day) plus melatonin (20 mg/day), and melatonin alone (20 mg/day).

Willingness to pay for complementary health insurance in Iran: Contingent valuation approach.

Int J Health Plann Manage

May 2022

Research Center for Health Services Administration, Institute of Future Studies in Health, Health Services Administration, Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Kerman, Iran.

Background: The Iranian health system is based on social health insurance, which is responsible for providing access to basic health care. In addition to basic treatment insurance, complementary health insurance (CHI) offers introductory packages that include surplus services. We recently observed an increase in Iran's health insurance loss coefficient, from 16.

Purpose: The invention and application of new immunotherapeutic methods can compensate for the inefficiency of conventional cancer treatment approaches, partly due to the inhibitory microenvironment of the tumor. In this study, we tried to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce anti-tumor immune responses by silencing the expression of the β-catenin in the tumor microenvironment and transmitting interleukin (IL)-15 cytokine to provide optimal conditions for the dendritic cell (DC) vaccine.

Methods: For this purpose, we used folic acid (FA)-conjugated SPION-carboxymethyl dextran (CMD) chitosan (C) nanoparticles (NPs) to deliver anti-β-catenin siRNA and IL-15 to cancer cells.

Background: Non-coding RNAs, including long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs), play critical roles in the pathogenesis and progression of pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). LncRNA H19, myocardial infarction-associated transcript (MIAT), miR-29a, and miR-33a have been suggested as potential targets for treating arterial hypertension. We explored the expression pattern of non-coding RNAs H19, MIAT, miR-29a, and miR-33a in monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PAH rats.

Three main inflammatory signaling pathways include nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), Janus kinases/Signal transducer and activator of transcriptions (JAKs/STATs), and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) play crucial roles in inducing, promoting, and regulating inflammatory responses in the immune system. Importantly, the breakdown of mechanisms that tightly regulate inflammatory signaling pathways can be the underlying cause of uncontrolled inflammatory responses and be associated with the generation and development of several inflammatory diseases. Hence, therapeutic strategies targeting inflammatory signaling pathways and their downstream components may promise to treat inflammatory diseases.

Burden of severe COVID-19 in center of Iran: results of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).

Int J Mol Epidemiol Genet

December 2021

Center for Healthcare Data Modeling, Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, School of Public Health, Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences Yazd, Iran.

The outbreak of COVID-19 disease is an international public health concern. Therefore, the analysis of information related to mortality and disability due to COVID-19 is considered important, so the present study was designed and conducted with the aim of assessing COVID-19 Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) in Yazd. In Yazd province, all suspected cases of COVID-19 that would be referred to central hospitals in order to get confirmed through PCR or CT scan test, were recruited to our study.

This study utilized a facile one-pot protocol to synthesize Ni-cobalt zeolitic imidazolate framework (Ni-ZIF-67) nanocomposite, which was then characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The Ni-ZIF-67 nanocomposite was subsequently applied to modify a screen-printed electrode (SPE) as a durable sensor for detection of Sudan I concomitantly with bisphenol A (BPA), with remarkably increased electrochemical response when comparing with a bare SPE. The results showed the calibration plot to be linear in the concentration range between 0.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are known as promising sources for cancer therapy and can be utilized as vehicles in cancer gene therapy. MSC-derived exosomes are central mediators in the therapeutic functions of MSCs, known as the novel cell-free alternatives to MSC-based cell therapy. MSC-derived exosomes show advantages including higher safety as well as more stability and convenience for storage, transport and administration compared to MSCs transplant therapy.

Metal organic frameworks (MOF) are a class of hybrid networks of supramolecular solid materials comprising a large number of inorganic and organic linkers, all bound to metal ions in a well-organized fashion. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a sub-group of MOFs with imidazole as an organic linker to metals; it is rich in carbon, nitrogen, and transition metals. ZIFs combine the classical zeolite characteristics of thermal and chemical stability with pore-size tunability and the rich topological diversity of MOFs.
