Objectives: To investigate the performance of the Physical Abilities and Mobility Scale (PAMS) in children receiving inpatient rehabilitation for paralysis related to spinal cord disease and injury (SCD/SCI).
Methods: Participants were 146 children with paralysis related to SCD/SCI, aged 2-21, admitted between January 2010 and 2017 for inpatient rehabilitation at a single free-standing academically affiliated pediatric rehabilitation hospital. Retrospective chart review was performed to obtain admission and discharge scores on the PAMS and the functional independence measure for children (WeeFIM®), collected as part of clinical care.

This study aimed to determine intra- and interrater reliability and agreement and establish construct validity for the CISR. Public Law 107-110, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, represents the most sweeping reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act since it was enacted in 1965. The goal of the No Child Left Behind Act is to improve the academic achievement of all American students so that they all meet their own state's standards for competence by 2014. The law focuses on closing the achievement gap that exists among the economically disadvantaged, those with limited English proficiency, racial/ethnic minorities, and students receiving special education services.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFForty children (7 to 11 years old) referred for evaluation of learning problems, who had scores within the normal range on standardized measures of academic achievement, were compared to 81 similarly referred children who had scored low (< 90) on at least one measure of academic achievement. We tested the hypothesis that children with normal achievement scores who are referred for evaluation of learning problems show neuropsychological profiles comparable to those of children with low achievement. Referral problems, school history, IQ, academic achievement, and neuropsychological function were evaluated.

This certification establishes statewide employment standards for school nurses, as opposed to competency-based professional certification. Although more than half of all states currently have some type of credentialing for school nurses, it takes many different forms.

States and school districts are increasingly faced with the potential of Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders for students with serious medical conditions. School nurses should assume leadership in developing both policy and procedural protocols, in addition to implementing approved DNR orders in schools. This article presents the current status of DNR policies nationally, legal considerations, and the issues to determine when managing DNR orders at the school site.

Nonorganic hearing loss in children can result from many factors. It is possible that some children show nonorganic hearing loss because of the stresses of past or on-going abuse and neglect. We report three cases of nonorganic hearing loss in children with a history of abuse.
