Autistic and Non-autistic Children's Pain Perception is Modulated by Their First-Hand Pain Sensitivity and Theory of Mind.

The current study examined whether autistic children's perception of others' pain could be modulated by their first-hand pain sensitivity and theory of mind (ToM). We measured the first-hand pain sensitivity, the rating of others' pain intensity, and the performance in the ToM tasks in 43 5- to 8-year-old autistic and 30 neurotypical children. Our results revealed hyposensitivity to first-hand pain, underestimation of others' pain intensity, as well as difficulties in the False Belief subtasks of ToM in autistic children.

Influence of soil amendments on phytostabilization, localization and distribution of zinc and cadmium by marigold varieties.

Marigolds (Tagetes erecta L.) were evaluated for phytoremediation potential of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) as a function of amendment application to soil. Vermicompost (V), biodigestate (Bi), and combined V + Bi (VBi) were used as soil amendments in Zn and Cd co-contaminated soils.

G-quadruplexes (G4s) are secondary DNA and RNA structures stabilized by positive cations in a central channel formed by stacked tetrads of Hoogsteen base-paired guanines. G4s form from G-rich sequences across the genome, whose biased distribution in regulatory regions points towards a gene-regulatory role. G4s can themselves be regulated by helicases, such as DHX36 (aliases: G4R1 and RHAU), which possess the necessary activity to resolve these stable structures.

NASA SPRINT exercise program efficacy for vastus lateralis and soleus skeletal muscle health during 70 days of simulated microgravity.

The efficacy of the NASA SPRINT exercise countermeasures program for quadriceps (vastus lateralis) and triceps surae (soleus) skeletal muscle health was investigated during 70 days of simulated microgravity. Individuals completed 6° head-down-tilt bedrest (BR, = 9), bedrest with resistance and aerobic exercise (BRE, = 9), or bedrest with resistance and aerobic exercise and low-dose testosterone (BRE + T, = 8). All groups were periodically tested for muscle ( = 9 times) and aerobic ( = 4 times) power during bedrest.

Microplastics (MPs) have become an environmental concern in recent years, with most research focused on the physiological effects of exposure. Comparatively little consideration has been given to the potential behavioral impacts of exposure, which may also have fitness consequences for individuals. Moreover, MPs can serve as vectors for endocrine-disrupting chemicals and other locally co-occurring contaminants known to impair behavioral responses.

Differentiating Language for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: A Practice-Informed Framework for Auditory and Visual Supports.

Purpose: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) serving students who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing (Deaf/hh) and their deaf education counterparts must navigate complexities in language that include modalities that are spoken or signed and proficiency, which is often compromised. This tutorial describes a practice-informed framework that conceptualizes and organizes a continuum of auditory and visual language supports with the aim of informing the practice of the SLP whose training is more inherently focused on spoken language alone, as well as the practice of the teacher of the Deaf/hh (TDHH) who may focus more on visual language supports.

Method: This product resulted from a need within interdisciplinary, graduate programs for SLPs and TDHHs.

Improving Reporting of Exercise Capacity Across Age Ranges Using Novel Workload Reference Equations.

Exercise capacity (EC) is an important predictor of survival in the general population and in subjects with cardiopulmonary disease. Despite its relevance, considering the percent-predicted workload (%pWL) given by current equations may overestimate EC in older adults. Therefore, to improve the reporting of EC in clinical practice, our main objective was to develop workload reference equations (pWL) that better reflect the relation between workload and age.

Treatment Rates for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in a Metropolitan Area: Observational Cohort Analysis.

Background: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) are the 2 most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regularly publishes and updates STI Treatment Guidelines. The purpose of this study was to measure and compare treatment rates for CT and GC among public and private providers.

Design and Characterization of Compact, Programmable, Multistranded Nonimmunostimulatory Nucleic Acid Nanoparticles Suitable for Biomedical Applications.

We report a thorough investigation of the role of single-stranded thymidine (ssT) linkers in the stability and flexibility of minimal, multistranded DNA nanostructures. We systematically explore the impact of varying the number of ssTs in three-way junction motifs (3WJs) on their formation and properties. Through various UV melting experiments and molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that while the number of ssTs minimally affects thermodynamic stability, the increasing ssT regions significantly enhance the structural flexibility of 3WJs.

Investigations of the exchange energy of neutral atoms in the large-Z limit.

The non-relativistic large-Z expansion of the exchange energy of neutral atoms provides an important input to modern non-empirical density functional approximations. Recent works report results of fitting the terms beyond the dominant term, given by the local density approximation (LDA), leading to an anomalous Z ln Z term that cannot be predicted from naïve scaling arguments. Here, we provide much more detailed data analysis of the mostly smooth asymptotic trend describing the difference between exact and LDA exchange energy, the nature of oscillations across rows of the Periodic Table, and the behavior of the LDA contribution itself.

Developing expressive language skills of deaf students through specialized writing instruction.

Writing is an essential element of literacy development, and language plays a central role in the composing process, including developing, organizing, and refining ideas. Language and writing are interconnected, making it paramount for educators to attend to the development of deaf students' language skills. In this quasi-experimental study, we examined the impact of strategic and interactive pedagogical approaches, namely Strategic and Interactive Writing Instruction, implemented with deaf students in grades 3-6 to develop genre-specific traits in their expressive language (spoken or signed) and writing.

This study examined the effects of aging and lifelong aerobic exercise on innate immune system components in the skeletal muscle of healthy women in the basal state and after an unaccustomed resistance exercise (RE) challenge. We also made exploratory between-sex comparisons with our previous report on men. Addressing the acute pesticide poisoning and toxicity to humans, is a global challenge of top priority. Serum albumin is the most abundant plasma protein, capable of binding with herbicide and pesticide residues. This study reports multifaceted approaches for in-depth and robust investigation of the molecular interactions of selected pesticides, including propanil (PPL), bromoxynil (BXL), metolachlor (MLR) and glyphosate (GPE) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) proteins using experimental (Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, native mass spectrometry and high field H NMR), molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and principal component analysis (PCA).

Writing instruction with grade-level/college-bound secondary deaf students.

In the current study, we used a sequential explanatory design to examine secondary writing instruction for deaf students in various school settings. An examination of secondary writing instruction was carried out in two cycles using a survey and subsequent focus group discussions. The first cycle (n = 222) presented an overview of secondary writing instruction for deaf students with diverse skill levels.

Identification of Hypertension in Electronic Health Records Through Computable Phenotype Development and Validation for Use in Public Health Surveillance: Retrospective Study.

Background: Electronic health record (EHR) systems are widely used in the United States to document care delivery and outcomes. Health information exchange (HIE) networks, which integrate EHR data from the various health care providers treating patients, are increasingly used to analyze population-level data. Existing methods for population health surveillance of essential hypertension by public health authorities may be complemented using EHR data from HIE networks to characterize disease burden at the community level.

Racial ideology, system justification, and just world belief in African Americans.

Just world belief and system justification have previously been proposed to explain actions and beliefs of disadvantaged groups, but rarely together and never simultaneously in participants of color. A necessary expansion of work in this area is among African-American participants with differing views of race and how those views influence justice perceptions. Racial ideologies, used in African-American racial identity research, were studied as possible predictors of belief in a just world and system justification scores.

Patterns of Mental Health Service Use During the Transition to Adulthood Among Autistic Adolescents and Young Adults.

Background: The time of transition into adulthood, especially when leaving school, is a time when many autistic adolescents and young adults (AYA) may stop receiving mental health services that they have relied on, leading to worse mental health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to describe patterns of mental health service use during transition to adulthood among autistic AYAs.

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study using electronic health records from years 2015 to 2019 from one large university health care system.

Glycaemic control and its associated factors among adult Omanis with type 1 diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional survey.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between glycemic control and diabetes self-management (DSM) and other associated factors among adult Omanis with Type-1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM).

Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive design was used to collect data among 210 adult Omanis with T1DM who were conveniently recruited. All tools were self-reported, whereas the HbA1c was collected from the patient's electronic medical records.

Photocatalytic degradation of chlorinated persistent organic pollutants is a very challenging process due to the high redox potential of the C-Cl bond that requires wide band gap catalysts that are activated under UV light. Designing a Z-scheme heterojunction between visible light-activated metal oxides with compatible band gaps enables these redox potentials. Herein, we report the design of a pyrochlore/Aurivillius Z-scheme heterojunction to enhance the photocatalytic activity of BiVO for the degradation of trichloroethylene.

Fast and slow muscle fiber transcriptome dynamics with lifelong endurance exercise.

We investigated fast and slow muscle fiber transcriptome exercise dynamics among three groups of men: lifelong exercisers (LLE, = 8, 74 ± 1 yr), old healthy nonexercisers (OH, = 9, 75 ± 1 yr), and young exercisers (YE, = 8, 25 ± 1 yr). On average, LLE had exercised ∼4 day·wk for ∼8 h·wk over 53 ± 2 years. Muscle biopsies were obtained pre- and 4 h postresistance exercise (3 × 10 knee extensions at 70% 1-RM).
