Importance: Understanding environmental risk factors for gestational diabetes (GD) is crucial for developing preventive strategies and improving pregnancy outcomes.
Objective: To examine the association of county-level radon exposure with GD risk in pregnant individuals.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This multicenter, population-based cohort study used data from the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-Be (nuMoM2b) cohort, which recruited nulliparous pregnant participants from 8 US clinical centers between October 2010 and September 2013.

Prosocial is a systems-level intervention framework that incorporates elements of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) with Ostrom's core design principles (CDPs) guiding effective organizations and collective action (Ostrom, 1990). We evaluated a Prosocial intervention to support teachers and staff in a specialized school. AB analysis supported improvements in group cohesion and values-behavior alignment during the intervention and pre-post analyses showed significant improvements in psychological flexibility and perceived stress of participants.

Objectives: Postprandial inflammation post-high-fat meals may be linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD incidence increases with age; however, whether older adults experience greater postprandial inflammation remains unclear. We examined whether analyzing age categorically versus continuously influenced relationships between age and postprandial inflammatory measures.

Aims: To better characterize functional consequences of the presence of COPD on cardiorespiratory fitness in patients with HF.
Methods And Results: Patients with any clinical indication for cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) were included in the international FRIEND registry. Diagnosis of COPD was confirmed by a ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 s and forced vital capacity (FEV/FVC) < 0.

Background: Indexing peak oxygen uptake (VOpeak) to total body mass can underestimate cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in women, older adults, and individuals with obesity. The primary objective of this multicenter study was to derive and validate a body size-independent scaling metric for VOpeak. This metric was termed exercise body mass (EBM).

Metal oxide semiconductor-activated photocatalysis has become a promising sustainable technology for the mitigation of emerging organic pollutants. The rational design of a photocatalyst heterojunction allows the degradation of a broad range of organic contaminants. Herein, we optimized hydrothermal approaches for the facial synthesis of well-defined BiOBr/CuO heterojunction photocatalysts.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic, which began worldwide around March 2020, has had an impact on hearing health, specifically tinnitus and hearing loss. Physiologically, COVID-19 infection, or medication used to treat the infection, has been reported to be a potential risk factor for tinnitus onset. In addition, tinnitus was reported to be a long COVID symptom or to occur after a COVID-19 vaccination in some cases.

We previously observed a range of whole muscle and individual slow and fast myofiber size responses (mean: +4 to -24%) in quadriceps (vastus lateralis) and triceps surae (soleus) muscles of individuals undergoing 70 days of simulated microgravity with or without the NASA SPRINT exercise countermeasures program. The purpose of the current investigation was to further explore, in these same individuals, the content of myonuclei and satellite cells, both of which are key regulators of skeletal muscle mass. Individuals completed 6° head-down-tilt bedrest (BR, = 9), bedrest with resistance and aerobic exercise (BRE, = 9), or bedrest with resistance and aerobic exercise and low-dose testosterone (BRE + T, = 8).

Older adults are at an increased risk of developing knee osteoarthritis. High internal knee abduction moment during daily activities may elevate the risk of knee osteoarthritis. Incline walking exercise has been found to decrease knee abduction moment in healthy young adults.

Chemical and biological stimulus screening in a hypogean actinomycete was used to elicit secondary metabolism. Optimal biosynthesis of bioactive natural products was identified using Multiplexed Activity Profiling for determining dose-dependent activity via six single-cell biological readouts. Bioactive extracts were fractioned to establish candidate compounds for isolation using Multiplexed Activity Metabolomics by correlating microtiter well-isolated phenotypes and extracted ion current peaks.

Background: Nursing schools in low-income countries face challenges to effectively educate and retain future nurses in rural settings where healthcare needs are more prominent. It is important to understand the experiences of nursing students in rural settings to better prepare them to meet the complex needs of the community. Little is known about nursing students' experiences in rural Uganda.

To better understand linkages between hydrology and ecosystem carbon flux in northern aquatic ecosystems, we evaluated the relationship between plant communities, biofilm development, and carbon dioxide (CO) exchange following long-term changes in hydrology in an Alaskan fen. We quantified seasonal variation in biofilm composition and CO exchange in response to lowered and raised water table position (relative to a control) during years with varying levels of background dissolved organic carbon (DOC). We then used nutrient-diffusing substrates (NDS) to evaluate cause-effect relationships between changes in plant subsidies (i.

There has been an emphasis on effect sizes for differential item functioning (DIF) with the purpose to understand the magnitude of the differences that are detected through statistical significance testing. Several different effect sizes have been suggested that correspond to the method used for analysis, as have different guidelines for interpretation. The purpose of this simulation study was to compare the performance of the DIF effect size measures described for quantifying and comparing the amount of DIF in two assessments.

Purpose: The Parent-Enhanced Moved by Reading to Accelerate Comprehension in English (Parent EMBRACE) program offers a bilingual parent-training literacy intervention for Latino families. Within the context of shared book reading, the application leverages both the home language and technology to increase parent question-asking during shared reading. Research goals were to (a) examine the potential of the Parent EMBRACE tutoring system at teaching parents to increase the quantity and variety of their question-asking during shared book reading, (b) examine changes to parents' reading attitudes or motivation, and (c) examine whether children's reading attitude is correlated with parent interactions.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe benefit of an external focus over an internal focus has been well-established. Within this literature, several studies have documented a distal effect of attentional focus by comparing the efficacy of a proximal and distal external focus. A potential confound is that most distal focus cues direct the performer's attention to an outcome occurring after the completion of movement, while the proximal cues direct attention to something that occurs during the movement process.

Background: Sprint interval training (SIT) has been shown to improve many indices of cardiovascular risk. The effect of SIT on emerging indicators of cardiovascular health, including arterial stiffness and carotid intima media thickness, remains unclear. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess changes in augmentation index at 75 beats per minute (AIx@75), pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) at three time points of an 8-week SIT intervention.

Competition and cooperation of charge-assisted anion-π interactions and hydrogen bonding were explored in the solid state and in solutions of 1-ethyl-4-carbomethoxypyridinium iodide, the compound utilized by Kosower to calculate solvent polarity Z-indices. X-ray structural analysis of this salt revealed multiple short contacts of iodide anions with hydrogen atoms and aromatic rings of pyridinium cations. Geometric characteristics, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and noncovalent interaction (NCI) analysis of these contacts indicated comparable interaction energies of the anion-π and hydrogen bonding between iodide and pyridinium cation.
