To better understand linkages between hydrology and ecosystem carbon flux in northern aquatic ecosystems, we evaluated the relationship between plant communities, biofilm development, and carbon dioxide (CO) exchange following long-term changes in hydrology in an Alaskan fen. We quantified seasonal variation in biofilm composition and CO exchange in response to lowered and raised water table position (relative to a control) during years with varying levels of background dissolved organic carbon (DOC). We then used nutrient-diffusing substrates (NDS) to evaluate cause-effect relationships between changes in plant subsidies (i.

November 2024

Center for Medical Education, Ball State University, Muncie, IN 47306, USA; Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Indiana University School of Medicine-Muncie, Muncie, IN 47303, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Pompe disease results from a deficiency in acid alpha-glucosidase, leading to muscle weakness, respiratory issues, and cardiomyopathy in infants; the only current treatment is enzyme replacement therapy (ERT).
  • A new approach using a Centyrin protein-conjugated short interfering RNA (siRNA) targets the transferrin receptor (CD71) and the GYS1 enzyme to inhibit glycogen synthesis, potentially restoring glycogen balance instead of just degrading it.
  • In tests on a Pompe mouse model, this novel siRNA conjugate effectively reduced GYS1 levels and glycogen accumulation, improving exercise performance, indicating its promise as a therapy for late-onset Pompe disease or in combination with ERT for infants.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed CPET results from over 7,000 individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD) to explore sex differences in achieving key exercise thresholds (VO2max and VT1).
  • It found that a significantly higher percentage of males (89.7%) achieved these thresholds compared to females (71.3%), indicating a notable disparity.
  • Factors contributing to females’ lower achievement rates included being female, older age, specific testing methods, depressive symptoms, and having a secondary heart failure diagnosis, suggesting a need for tailored strategies in exercise testing for females.

The benefit of an external focus over an internal focus has been well-established. Within this literature, several studies have documented a distal effect of attentional focus by comparing the efficacy of a proximal and distal external focus. A potential confound is that most distal focus cues direct the performer's attention to an outcome occurring after the completion of movement, while the proximal cues direct attention to something that occurs during the movement process.

Competition and cooperation of charge-assisted anion-π interactions and hydrogen bonding were explored in the solid state and in solutions of 1-ethyl-4-carbomethoxypyridinium iodide, the compound utilized by Kosower to calculate solvent polarity Z-indices. X-ray structural analysis of this salt revealed multiple short contacts of iodide anions with hydrogen atoms and aromatic rings of pyridinium cations. Geometric characteristics, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and noncovalent interaction (NCI) analysis of these contacts indicated comparable interaction energies of the anion-π and hydrogen bonding between iodide and pyridinium cation.
