A novel index to predict postoperative hypocalcemia in primary hyperparathyroidism.

Bakground: Vitamin D (Vit D) deficiency is common in patients with hyperparathyroidism, but the importance of replacement before surgery is controversial. It can be predicted that hypocalcemia risk will be higher in patients with high bone turnover.

Aim: In this study, the effect of preoperative ALP/Vit D ratio on postoperative hypocalcemia was investigated.

Comparison of the efficacy of continuous radiofrequency thermocoagulation, pulsed radiofrequency denervation applications, and TENS therapies for lumbar facet syndrome: A single-blind randomized controlled trial.

Objectives: We aimed to compare the effectiveness of TENS, used in physical therapy departments, and continuous radiofrequency thermocoagulation (CRF) and pulsed radiofrequency denervation (PRF), used in algology departments, in patients with lumbar facet syndrome (LFS).

Methods: Subjects were selected from patients with LFS visiting outpatient clinics of physical therapy and algology departments at Ege University School of Medicine, whose pain was refractory to medical treatment for at least 3 months. Subjects were randomized into 3 groups.

Objective: Other primary headache disorders (OPHD) are under-investigated compared to frequent primary headache types like migraine, tension-type headache, and trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias. Knowledge of the distribution and characteristics of OPHD subtypes is crucial for their recognition. We aimed to determine the prevalence at the hospital and headache clinics and clinical characteristics of OPHDs in patients from 13 countries.

The Effect of Ice Massage Applied to the SP6 Point on Labor Pain, Labor Comfort, Labor Duration, and Anxiety: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Introduction: Acupressure and cold application are nonpharmacologic methods that midwives can use for labor pain. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of ice massage applied to the SP6 acupressure point during labor on labor pain, labor comfort, labor duration, and anxiety.

Methods: A single-masked, randomized controlled trial was conducted with 100 nulliparous women, including 50 in the intervention group and 50 in the control group.

Turkish Validation of the Rapid Interactive Screening Test for Autism in Toddlers.

It is important to diagnose autism spectrum disorder at an early age and to start an early intervention program without delay. In this study, we aimed to validate the Rapid Interactive Screening Test for Autism in Toddlers (RITA-T) in a group of Turkish children and found that the RITA-T which has been shown to be a valid and reliable screening test for 18- to 36-month-old children in studies conducted in different countries, is also valid in Turkish children. Similar to previous studies, our results showed that the RITA-T has good sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing children with autism spectrum disorder.

Optic neuritis in Turkish children and adolescents: A multicenter retrospective study.

Background: Various etiologies may underlie optic neuritis, including autoantibody-mediated disorders described in the last decade. We re-examined demographic, clinical, laboratory features and prognostic factors in pediatric patients with autoimmune optic neuritis according to current knowledge.

Objectives: Hereditary hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia (HSH), which results from variations in the transient receptor potential melastatin 6 () genes, is a rare hereditary cause of extremely low serum magnesium levels. We describe an infant with triggered seizures due to hypomagnesemia and a novel mutation in gene was identified.

Case Presentation: A 10-month-old boy presented with multidrug resistant seizures, and axial hypotonia due to severe hypomagnesemia.

Introduction: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) refer to a broad range of diseases including developmental delay, intellectual disability, epilepsy, autism spectrum disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder caused by dysfunctions in tightly controlled brain development. The genetic backgrounds of NDDs are quite heterogeneous; to date, recessive or dominant variations in numerous genes have been implicated. Herein, we present a large consanguineous family from Turkiye, who has been suffering from NDDs with two distinct clinical presentations.

The effect of the anticholinergic burden on mortality following elective cardiac surgery.

Objective: The cumulative effect of drugs with anticholinergic properties may pose a significant risk in the post-discharge period of patients who have undergone elective cardiac surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between anticholinergic burden and 6-month postdischarge mortality in older cardiac surgery patients.

Methods: This study performed a retrospective longitudinal analysis of patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery at a tertiary care centre from January 2021 to January 2022.

Thrombocytopenia is a characteristic adverse event of trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1), one of the essential treatment options for human epithelial growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer. The present study investigated the predictive value of thrombocytopenia for time-to-treatment discontinuation (TTD) in patients receiving T-DM1 for advanced-stage HER2-positive breast cancer. The present observational study enrolled 138 patients who received T-DM1 at six oncology centers from January 2016 to December 2021.

Male Urethral Stricture in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome.

Objective: Urethral stricture is characterized by fibrosis that decreases urine flow. Metabolic syndrome is a complex disorder that causes fibrosis in many organs. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between metabolic syndrome and appearance of urethral stricture and effects of metabolic syndrome on the recurrence of urethral stricture in patients with primary urethral stricture who underwent direct visual internal urethrotomy.

Diagnostic delay in psoriatic arthritis: insights from a nationwide multicenter study.

This study aimed to investigate the duration of diagnostic delay in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and identify potential contributing factors using a comprehensive, population-based approach. Data were obtained from the Turkish League Against Rheumatism (TLAR)-Network, involving patients who met the CASPAR criteria. Diagnostic delay was defined as time interval from symptom onset to PsA diagnosis, categorized as ≤ 2 years and > 2 years.

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that develops due to the impaired immune response in genetically susceptible individuals, and its etiopathogenesis is not fully elucidated. IL-17 A is a cytokine that is produced by a type of immune cell called Th17 cells and is involved in the immune response and inflammation. Background: Malnutrition is frequently observed in patients with heart failure, and malnutrition causes poor prognosis in these patients. Various calculation tools are used to assess malnutrition, with the geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) being one that is frequently used. In our study, we aimed to investigate the value of GNRI in assessing one-year mortality and rehospitalization in patients with heart failure.

Postpartum Depression Among Mothers of Infants Hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization of newborn babies has been shown to have a negative impact on the mental health of postpartum women. The mental health of new mothers may be further burdened by the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on social, economic, and psychological dimensions. This study aimed to evaluate postpartum depression and related factors in mothers of infants hospitalized in NICU during two distinct COVID-19 pandemic periods and examine any additional effects of the pandemic on the mental health of postpartum women.
