Invasive aspergillosis is a rare but severe fungal infection primarily affecting immunocompromised individuals. The Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has introduced new complexities in managing aspergillosis due to the widespread use of corticosteroids for treating COVID-19-related respiratory distress, which can increase susceptibility to fungal infections. Here, we present a challenging case of progressive cerebral aspergillosis complicated by cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST) in a 67-year-old male with a history of COVID-19.

Objectives: Basilar artery atherosclerotic plaque is the predominant cause of stroke in the posterior circulation. İscheamic stroke caused basilar artery atherosclerosis faces a high risk of recurrence despite optimal medical treatment, which might lie in the less than ideal recognition of underlying stroke mechanism and lack of individualized treatment for strokes of different mechanisms. We aim in this study to investigate the effect on stroke mechanism, stroke recurrence and clinical outcome in stroke patients with basilar artery atherosclerosis.

Aims: We aimed to investigate the anxiolytic effect of darbepoetin alpha (DEPO), an erythropoietin derivative, in a neuroinflammation model regarding different behaviors and biological pathways.

Methods: Forty adult male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups (control, LPS, DEPO, and DEPO + LPS). The rats were treated with 5 µg /kg DEPO once a week for four weeks, after which neuroinflammation was induced with 2 mg/kg lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

Article Synopsis
  • * 39 patients with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis or Scheuermann Kyphosis were divided into three groups based on their anesthesia type, and the occurrence of clonus was monitored during awakening.
  • * Results showed varying rates of clonus across groups, but no significant link with surgery factors, and no neurological deficits were reported post-surgery, suggesting that ankle clonus isn't a reliable indicator of neurological impairment.

Objectives: There is evidence that the inflammatory demyelinating disorder in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is associated with acute seizures and epilepsy. Additionally, the likelihood of developing epilepsy increases with neurodegeneration. This study aims to reveal the clinical and radiological features of MS-epilepsy/seizure coexistence.

Objective: This study aimed to assess vitamin D deficiency in a cohort of healthy young adults using the novel inflammatory parameters neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio (MHR), and uric acid-to-HDL cholesterol ratio (UHR).

Subjects And Methods: The study included 1,190 participants, with demographic and laboratory data retrieved retrospectively from our institution's database. The inclusion criteria were ages 22-35 years; absence of acute, subacute, or chronic diseases; no regular medication use; and laboratory values within specified reference ranges.

Background: Assessment of the visual pathway, which is frequently affected by MS, provides the opportunity to measure the remyelination of acute and chronic MS lesions in vivo and non-invasively. VEP can be used in this context. Amplitude is a parameter of axonal loss, whereas latency is an in vivo biomarker of myelin repair.

Development of the Menopause Perception Scale.

Menopause

September 2024

From the Nursing Department, Faculty of Health Sciences, and Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Esenboga Campus, Çubuk, Ankara, Turkey.

Objective: How women perceive menopause depends on how well they go through that period of time. However, there is no measure that can be used to assess how women perceive menopause. Therefore, we developed a valid and reliable scale (Menopause Perception Scale [MPS]) to assess how women perceive menopause.

Stress, which triggers numerous physiological and behavioral responses in the organism, is a significant risk factor that contributes to the development of psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. This study aimed to investigate the inflammation, oxidative stress status, anxiety, and depression-like behaviors of adolescent rodents exposed to chronic intermittent cold stress. Adolescent male rats were subjected to a modified chronic intermittent cold stress model (21 days, 1 hour/day, 4 °C).

Immune checkpoint inhibitors for POLE or POLD1 proofreading-deficient metastatic colorectal cancer.

Ann Oncol

July 2024

Department of Medical Oncology, Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan, Italy. Electronic address:

Background: POLE and POLD1 proofreading deficiency (POLE/D1pd) define a rare subtype of ultramutated metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC; over 100 mut/Mb). Disease-specific data about the activity and efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in POLE/D1pd mCRC are lacking and it is unknown whether outcomes may be different from mismatch repair-deficient (dMMR)/microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) mCRCs treated with ICIs.

Patients And Methods: In this global study, we collected 27 patients with mCRC harboring POLE/D1 mutations leading to proofreading deficiency and treated with anti-programmed cell death-ligand 1 alone +/- anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 agents.

Seizure semiology and electroencephalograph (EEG) are very important for determining seizure type, hemisphere lateralization, or localization. Clinical symptoms of focal seizures, as well as findings at the onset or end of a focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizure (FBTCS), are highly informative for lateralization. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of asymmetric last clonic jerk in patients with temporal or extratemporal lobe epilepsy with pathologies, localization, lateralization, or other semiological findings detected in neuroimaging or neuro psychometric tests and its positive predictive value for the detection of hemisphere lateralization based on seizure onset ictal EEG activation.

Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a disorder associated with significant functional impairments that can have important consequences for the individual and the society. Those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were reported to be more vulnerable in the face of difficulties and experience more psychological problems during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. It was shown that the psychological problems experienced during the pandemic could persist during the normalization stage.

Hemiballism/hemichorea (HH) is a hyperkinetic movement disorder observed mostly in older adults with cerebrovascular diseases. Although the symptoms improve without any treatment, lesioning or DBS (deep brain stimulation) may be rarely required to provide symptomatic relief for patients with severe involuntary movements. HH is a rare complication of uncontrolled diabetes.

Article Synopsis
  • A study looked at how doctors in Europe treat people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because there are more traumatic events happening recently.
  • Out of 611 doctors, most recommended using antidepressants like sertraline, but there were differences in medicine choices based on where the doctors were from in Europe.
  • The findings show that while many doctors agree on treatment methods, differences in practice suggest that more communication and education are needed to follow treatment guidelines better across Europe.
