The evaluation of the relationship between risk factors and prognosis in intracerebral hemorrhage patients.

Background And Purpose: Patients were assessed in terms of risk factors, hematoma size and localization, the effects of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) on mortality and morbidity, and post-stroke depression.

Methods: The present study evaluated the demographic data, risk factors, and neurological examinations of 216 ICH patients. The diagnosis, volume, localization, and ventricular extension of the hematomas were determined using computed tomography scans.

A new marker for breast cancer diagnosis, human epididymis protein 4: A preliminary study.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer type in women. Tumor markers have been widely used for assessing the treatment response and early diagnosis of recurrence. Human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) is expressed in ductal carcinoma of the breast tissue; however, its serum levels and their diagnostic and prognostic potential in breast cancer have not been investigated, which was therefore the aim of the present study.

Hemoglobins as new players in multiple sclerosis: metabolic and immune aspects.

Basic science investigations and clinical observations in recent years indicate that hemoglobins (Hbs) may have important roles in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). These findings can be summarized as follows: 1- Erythrocyte fragility is higher in MS patients, the released free Hb damages blood-brain barrier, myelin basic protein and also triggers iron overload and inflammation. 2- Free Hb may further activate the inflammatory responses through Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), present on microglia and other innate immunocytes.

Evaluation of serum vitamin D levels in patients with X syndrome.

Objective: Cardiac X syndrome is defined in patients with normal coronary angiogram who has typical chest pain and objective myocardial ischemia evidence. Recent studies have evaluated the association between vitamin D deficiency (vit D def) and cardiovascular diseases. Our aim of this study was to compare serum vit D levels in patients with syndrome X and controls.

Purpose: It has been shown in studies that there are knowledge gaps about epilepsy in both developing and developed countries all around the world. Lack of knowledge exists even among people with epilepsy (PWE), and this may affect their lives negatively. This study aimed to evaluate what PWE in Turkey know about their disease.

Clinical efficacy and drug resistance of anti-epidermal growth factor receptor therapy in colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranked third in cancer related death and its incidence has been increasing worldwide. In recent decades important therapeutic advances have been developed in treatment of metastatic CRC (mCRC), such as monoclonal antibodies against epidermal growth factor receptor (anti-EGFR), which provided additional clinical benefits in mCRC. However, anti-EGFR therapies have limited usage due to approximately 95% of patients with KRAS mutated mCRC do not response to anti-EGFR treatment.

Effects of Oxcarbazepine and Levetiracetam on Calcium, Ionized Calcium, and 25-OH Vitamin-D3 Levels in Patients with Epilepsy.

Objective: The primary objective of the present study was to further elucidate the effects of oxcarbazepine (OXC) and levetiracetam (LEV) monotherapies on the bone health status of patients with epilepsy.

Methods: This study included 48 patients who attended our epilepsy outpatient clinic, had a diagnosis of epilepsy, and were undergoing either OXC or LEV monotherapy and 42 healthy control subjects. The demographic and clinical features of the patients, including gender, age, onset of disease, daily drug dosage, and duration of disease, were noted.

Purpose: To investigate the relation between PET-CT SUVmax value and prognostic factors in locally advanced breast cancer.

Methods: Data of 73 patients were retrospectively analyzed. Relations between SUVmax value, clinical stage, tumor grade and breast cancer molecular subtypes were analyzed by using one-way ANOVA and x(2) tests.

Stigmatization and social impacts of epilepsy in Turkey.

Objective: Stigma associated with epilepsy has negative effects on psychosocial outcomes, affecting the lives of people with epilepsy (PWE). Obtaining basic social rights can be difficult compared to the general population. The aim of our study was to evaluate the perceived stigma among PWE and social attitude towards the disease and to compare the social measures with the general population in Turkey.

Evaluation of interictal autonomic function during attack and remission periods in cluster headaches.

Objective: To investigate which part of the autonomic system is mainly involved and assess the sensitivity of face sympathetic skin response in cluster headache.

Material And Methods: The study sample consisted of 19 drug-free cluster headache patients (16 males, three females) and 19 healthy volunteers. Demographic features and pain characteristics were thoroughly identified.

Decline of compound muscle action potentials and statistical MUNEs during Wallerian degeneration.

Aim Of The Study: In two previous studies, we found that the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude loss was significantly higher than the loss of estimated motor unit numbers in the course of Wallerian degeneration (WD). In order to overcome some drawbacks of the method previously used, we performed a similar CMAP vs MUNE comparison by using the statistical motor unit number estimation (MUNE) method.

Patients And Methods: Initial electrophysiological studies on 6 patients were performed between 22 and 98 hours after the injuries; it was possible to make repeated examinations, four times in 1 nerve, twice in 1 nerve and three times in 4 nerves, before the eventual complete disappearance of the CMAPs.

Single therapeutic catheterization for treatment of late diagnosed native coarctation of aorta using a covered stent.

Here in we are reporting a 35-year-old pregnant, hypertensive woman with a strict descending aorta coarctation. She had two missing pregnancies which were complicated with hypertension, but which were not diagnosed for any pathologies before. We diagnosed coarctation of aorta, but however postponed her treatment after delivery of baby, because hypertension was under control with medical treatment and she had no complication.

Forehead sympathetic skin responses in determining autonomic involvement in Parkinson's disease.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate forehead sympathetic skin response (SSR) and demonstrate any differences with extremity SSR in determining autonomic nervous system (ANS) involvement in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).

Methods: Twenty early stage, 20 advanced stage idiopathic PD patients and 20 healthy controls participated in this study. SSR of forehead, hands and feet, heart rate variability (HRV), orthostatic intolerance, QT intervals and dysautonomic symptoms were evaluated.

Comparison of ductoscopy, galactography, and imaging modalities for the evaluation of intraductal lesions: a critical review.

Background: Today, in cases of nipple discharge of unclear origin, the abundance of diagnostic procedures - a, diagnostic dilemma' - becomes apparent, because unequivocal indications and a current, standardized examination sequence are presently not available. The diagnostic workup of patients with nipple discharge usually includes the clinical history, physical examination, mammography, ultrasonography, galactography, and nipple discharge cytology, but not ductoscopy.

Methods: In this review we analyze and discuss the possible role of ductoscopy in evaluating intraductal pathologies and its combined use with diagnostic imaging modalities.

The purpose of this study is to consider the clinical utility of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and find a correlation with VEP. Effects of different disease modifying treatments (DMT) were further evaluated by measuring OCT parameters and whether a correlation exists between the RNFL thickness, disease duration and expanded disability status scale (EDSS) were also assessed. 13 patients were on interferon beta-1a (IFN), 14 patients were receiving glatiramer acetate (GA), 19 patients were not being treated with any DMT and 21 healthy controls were included the study.

Kounis Syndrome together with Myocardial Bridging Leading to Acute Myocardial Infarction at Young Age.

Kounis syndrome, also named as "allergic angina syndrome," is a diagnosis in which exposure to an allergen causes mostly coronary spasm and rarely plaque rupture, resulting in ischemic myocardial events. Myocardial bridging is defined as an intramural segment of a coronary artery and its systolic compression by overlying fibers. Myocardial bridging generally has a benign prognosis and mostly affects the mid portion of left anterior descending coronary artery.

Microsurgery in the removal of a large cerebral hydatid cyst: technical case report.

Objective: Surgery is presently the mainstay in the treatment of cerebral hydatid cysts, but removal without perforation of the cyst wall is critical. The Dowling-Orlando technique has been the main surgical choice for the intact removal of intracranial hydatid cysts. Dowling described his technique in 1929, well before the introduction of the microscope in neurosurgery.
