Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined how various physiological and anatomical factors, such as age and arm length, impact the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) H-reflex, establishing reference values for this reflex.
  • - Researchers assessed H-reflexes in 80 healthy individuals through median nerve stimulation, finding significantly higher reflex amplitudes during isometric voluntary contraction (IVC) compared to rest.
  • - Results indicated that age and arm length notably affected H-reflex latency, while gender differences showed that women had shorter latencies and higher reflex amplitudes during contraction.

Heterozygous BTNL8 variants in individuals with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

J Exp Med

December 2024

Section of Paediatric Infectious Disease, Department of Infectious Disease, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London, London, UK.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare condition following SARS-CoV-2 infection associated with intestinal manifestations. Genetic predisposition, including inborn errors of the OAS-RNAseL pathway, has been reported. We sequenced 154 MIS-C patients and utilized a novel statistical framework of gene burden analysis, "burdenMC," which identified an enrichment for rare predicted-deleterious variants in BTNL8 (OR = 4.

BCR::ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) pose a substantial risk of thrombosis, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Anticoagulant therapy, historically based on vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), has limitations in preventing recurrent thrombotic events and managing bleeding complications. Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) offer a potential alternative with improved pharmacokinetics and compliance.

Cardiomyopathy, which is shortly defined as a disease of the myocardium, has a broad definition that includes many different diagnoses. Recent advances in cardiac imaging techniques, including basic and advanced echocardiography, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, and cardiac magnetic resonance, allow for a more accurate evaluation of volumes and thickness of cardiac chambers, systolic and diastolic function of the ventricules, and tissue structure. Multimodality imaging often provides the first clinical suspicion for specific etiologies, especially when the medical and family history is unclear, by identification of red flags of underlying systemic diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • PKU is caused by a lack of phenylalanine hydroxylase, affecting the conversion of phenylalanine to tyrosine, and the study involved 74 patients averaging 21.7 years old, assessing their menstrual cycles and PMS symptoms.
  • 82.4% of the participants had regular cycles, with 39.1% experiencing PMS symptoms, and issues like menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea were noted in a small percentage.
  • However, the study found no significant link between the severity of PMS symptoms and blood phenylalanine levels, suggesting that better awareness and management of PMS could enhance the quality of life for women with PKU.

The timing of growth plate fusion is a key indicator for age estimation and is primarily used in forensic investigations. On the other hand, non-ionizing techniques such as MRI are being developed to provide safer and more ethical evaluations in forensic casework. This study aims to evaluate the closure process of growth plates in the distal femoral and proximal tibial epiphyses using Multiple Echo Recombined Gradient Echo (MERGE) MRI sequences and provide age estimation data based on staging methods for forensic purposes.

  • - The study aimed to compare continuous suture (CS) and interrupted suture (IS) techniques used in urethroplasty, focusing on their effectiveness and complication rates.
  • - A retrospective analysis included 97 patients with urethral strictures; results showed that CS had shorter operation and catheter times compared to IS, but success rates and complications were similar for both techniques.
  • - The findings suggest that while there’s no significant difference in overall outcomes, the CS technique allows for quicker surgeries and earlier catheter removal.

  • The study evaluated five different scoring systems (FGSI, UFGSI, ACCI, qSOFA, LRINEC) to predict outcomes in patients with Fournier gangrene, analyzing data from 311 patients between 2010 and 2024.
  • Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that UFGSI and FGSI were the most effective scoring systems in predicting mortality, with higher values seen in non-survivor patients.
  • ROC analysis determined optimal cut-off values for each scoring system, with UFGSI proving to be the most accurate for predicting mortality, achieving 84% sensitivity and 97% specificity at a score ≥12.
