Servant Leadership, Emotional Intelligence: Essential for Baccalaureate Nursing Students.

Baker University Bachelor of Science in Nursing students study servant leadership and emotional intelligence in a Leadership and Management in Professional Nursing course. The acquisition of these skills increases collaboration with clients and colleagues. Servant leadership improves care through encouragement and facilitation rather than power (Waterman, 2011).

Evolving role of pediatric nurse practitioners.

Purpose: To report and interpret findings from national pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) job analysis surveys reflecting the changes in the knowledge and skills required for advanced practice.

Data Sources: National role delineation studies (RDS) conducted by American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in 2003, 2008, and 2011.

Conclusions: Since the first nurse practitioner (NP) program was established in 1965 to train pediatric nurses for advanced practice, the role of the PNP has continued to develop.

Psychometric evaluation of the perceived prejudice in health care scale-modified (PPHC-M) among baccalaureate student nurses.

Purpose: Discrepancy in quality of health care for patients with diverse backgrounds contributes to health outcome disparities. BSN students reveal surprise regarding the presence of health care disparities. Critical social theory guided this study.

Making a difference with combined community assessment and change projects.

Nursing students value projects that enable them to make a difference in the lives of others. Two major group projects, assessment of an identified community and completion of a leadership change project, required during their last semester were combined to provide a meaningful experience for students. In addition to discussing ways to combine these projects, this article shares methods to build team cohesiveness.

Symptom perception and adherence to asthma controller medications.

Purpose: To explore asthma symptom perception and the relationship between asthma symptom perception and adherence to asthma treatment.

Design: Adult patients (N=120) of asthma/allergy specialty clinics, taking Advair as a controller medication, were enrolled in this cross-sectional descriptive study.

Methods: Ninety-seven participants completed 4 weeks of daily diaries to assess subjective symptom perception and measured peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR), both done twice daily.

The African American experience in the Islamic faith.

Disparity of health outcomes has been identified as a key concern in the health of Americans. Marginalization of the African American population may be a contributing factor. Identification of health protectors may prove key in decreasing disparities.
