Objective:  Ocular hemorrhages (OHs) may cause visual disturbances and incidence vary from 18 to 39% in newborns. Precipitated/instrumental delivery and perinatal asphyxia were predefined risk factors. Acidosis can interfere with coagulation and disrupt the pressure of ocular capillaries and put infants with moderate acidosis with or without hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy at risk for OH.

Article Synopsis
  • - Dermatoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that helps differentiate between mycosis fungoides (MF) and small plaque parapsoriasis (SPP), which can appear similar in initial stages.
  • - A study involving 59 patients used videodermoscopy and capillaroscopy to assess vascular patterns, revealing that MF patients had significantly higher scores for specific vascular features and microvascular density (MVD) compared to SPP patients.
  • - The research demonstrated distinct dermatoscopic and histopathological criteria that could help in accurately distinguishing between early-stage MF and SPP.

Article Synopsis
  • Visible perivascular spaces (BGPVS) are linked to cerebral small vessel disease and may signal higher future stroke risk based on a large analysis of patient data.
  • The study analyzed 7,778 participants with recent ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), examining the relationship between BGPVS, CSOPVS, and various health factors.
  • Results indicated that a greater burden of BGPVS correlates with higher risks of ischemic stroke but not intracranial hemorrhage, while CSOPVS showed weaker associations overall.

Aim: To investigate the outcomes of peripartum hysterectomies (PHs) conducted to prevent maternal morbidity and mortality at a tertiary care hospital with 15,000 deliveries per year.

Method: Patients who underwent PHs during delivery and/or within 24 h of delivery between the years 2011-2022 were retrospectively evaluated. Hysterectomies not performed in the peripartum period, cases that were managed by methods such as balloon tamponade, compression suture, or arterial ligation rather than hysterectomy, and hysterectomies performed before 20 weeks were excluded.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the incidence of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in infants ≥36 weeks gestational age in Turkey, finding an incidence rate of 2.13 per 1000 live births, with varying severity levels among those affected.
  • - Among infants with HIE, therapeutic hypothermia (TH) was notably administered to 34.5% of those with mild HIE, while factors like gestational age affected mortality rates, especially in those born at 34-35 weeks.
  • - Despite an unchanged incidence of HIE, the study revealed a decreased mortality rate and no significant impact of TH timing on MRI findings or mortality.

Objectives: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising non-invasive brain stimulation technique for treating chronic pain, yet its effectiveness in chronic lower extremity pain due to lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) has not been studied. This research aimed to investigate the impact of tDCS on pain, walking capacity, functional status, and quality of life in LSS patients.

Patients And Methods: In this prospective, randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study, 32 LSS patients received either real or sham tDCS over the motor cortex contralateral to the patient's painful lower extremity for 10 consecutive weekdays (10 sessions).

The revised classification of tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021 was hailed as a major advance and improvement in the management of brain tumor patients. However, the increased reliance on sophisticated technology and molecular analysis posed a major challenge to healthcare systems in low- and middle-income countries. A few recent publications have drawn attention to the issue of the applicability of the new CNS WHO 2021 worldwide, but the exuberant enthusiasm observed in high-income countries seems to have stifled such a concern.

Management of neonates with maternal prenatal coronavirus infection and influencing factors.

Pediatr Res

January 2024

University of Health Sciences Turkey, Ankara Bilkent City Hospital, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatology, Ankara, Türkiye.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in pregnancy causes adverse outcomes for both the mother and the fetus. Neonates are at risk of vertical transmission and in-utero infection. Additionally, intensive care unit (ICU) admission and impairment in the organ systems of the mother are associated with neonatal outcomes, including impaired intrauterine growth, prematurity, and neonatal ICU admission.

Objective:  The availability of reliable and inexpensive markers that can be used to determine the risk of rupture during methotrexate (MTX) treatment in ectopic pregnancies (EPs) is considerable. The aim of the present study is to investigate the role of systemic inflammatory markers such as leukocytes (or white blood cells, WBCs), the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet distribution width (PDW), which are among the parameters of the complete blood count (CBC), in the prediction of rupture of EPs under MTX treatment.

Materials And Methods:  A total of 161 patients with tubal EP who underwent a single-dose methotrexate (MTX) protocol were retrospectively analyzed, and the control group (n = 83) included patients cured by MTX, while the ruptured group (n = 78) included patients who were operated on for tubal rupture during the MTX treatment.
