Objective: The objective of this study was to identify, among the different anthropometric indicators, the one that shows higher discriminatory power for the prognosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS).

Design: Observational cross-sectional study PARTICIPANTS: Obese individuals elective to bariatric surgery METHODS: A study based on data of 758 patients aged ≥ 21 years old, of both sexes, in the pre-operatory stage of the surgical procedure of gastric bypass. Obstructive sleep apnea and obstructive sleep hypopnea were evaluated and classified through the apnea-hypopnea index, which was obtained through the examination of polysomnography.

Unlabelled: Pulmonary artery aneurysm (PAA) is a rare disease, with a poorly known natural history, complex diagnosis and may evolve with serious complications, such as compression of adjacent anatomical structures. In some cases, the presence of such complications is what determines the symptoms and is the initial manifestation of the disease. This paper aims to report the case of a patient with typical angina, submitted to cardiac catheterization, which showed, among other lesions, severe left main coronary lesion with characteristics that led to the suspicion of extrinsic compression, which was identified as caused by a PAA.

Background: Periodontitis is a progressive inflammatory process, and its pathogenesis is related to the presence of a dysbiotic subgingival biofilm that elicits the immune response. Porphyromonas gingivalis is a keystone pathogen, and its Lys-gingipain (Kgp) virulence factor is involved in the pathogen-host interaction through the production of cytokines by host cells, but the specific mechanisms of this interaction have not been elucidated. The present study evaluated the in vitro production of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β cytokines in response to antigenic stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with novel Kgp synthetic peptides.

Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) is one of the main pathogens in chronic periodontitis (CP). Studies on the immunogenicity of its virulence factors may contribute to understanding the host response to infection. The present study aimed to use in silico analysis as a tool to identify epitopes from Lys-gingipain (Kgp) and neuraminidase virulence factors of the Pg ATCC 33277 strain.

Patents related to the treatment and diagnosis of bruxism.

Expert Opin Ther Pat

July 2018

f Post-graduation Program on Intelectual Property and Technology Transfer for Inovation (PROFNIT) , Federal University of Bahia, Campus Universitário de Ondina, R. Barão de Jeremoabo , Salvador-BA , Brazil.

Introduction: Bruxism is among the most chronic dental problems worldwide, and its perception may increase indicatively the condition of people's health, avoiding future health problems. Technologic solutions have improved considerably owing to new diagnostic and treatment technologies and their automation. This review aims to assess therapeutic methods for bruxism through analysis of patent applications spanning recent decades.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) has been linked to maladaptive plasticity in the brain, which may contribute to chronic pain. Neuromodulatory approaches, such as Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) and Peripheral Electrical Stimulation (PES), have been used therapeutically to counteract brain maladaptive plasticity. However, it is currently unclear whether these neuromodulatory techniques enhance the benefits of exercise when administered together.

Background: There are various factors that influence the effect of physical exercise on the lipid profile, among them the body mass index and calorie expenditure of the exercise are some of the main factors. To test the hypothesis that a physical exercise session based on caloric expenditure may acutely modify the glycemia and lipid values of women with excess body mass.

Methods: The study included 66 women, randomly divided into two groups, control and experimental, with BMI of 29 ± 4.

As a common problem in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), anemia affects 25-63% of the elderly. The aim of the present study was to describe the prevalence and characteristics of anemia and its associated factors in the institutionalized elderly. The cross-sectional study was carried out with three hundred thirteen individuals aged ≥ 60 years, of both genders, living in long-term care facilities for the elderly in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

Background: To advance the treatment of HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), randomised controlled therapeutic studies with appropriate and sensitive outcomes are reuired. One candidate outcome is the 10-metre walk test (10MWT), a patient-centred, simple and functional measure. To calculate sample size based on 10MWT as the primary outcome, variability within and between subjects must be known.

The purpose of this paper is to report a case of chondroblastic osteosarcoma in the region of the maxilla, with 5 months of evolution. The term osteosarcoma refers to a heterogeneous group of malignancies with bone formation or mesenchymal tissue with histopathological evidence of osteogenic differentiation. The pattern of chondroblastic osteosarcoma represents 25% of all reported cases of this neoplasm.

Background: The primary goals of orthopedic treatment of open fractures are to prevent infection, stabilize bone injury and restore limb function. The objective of the current study was to identify risk factors associated with infection in patients suffering from open fractures, using the strength of association of these factors to propose a score that enables risk stratification in initial care.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 122 patients who underwent open fracture treatment.

Analysis of flow-mediated vasodilation (FMV) of the brachial artery by use of ultrasound allows assessing endothelial function, and provides pathophysiological, diagnostic and prognostic information. This systematic review was aimed at assessing the literature level of evidence of the predictive capacity of endothelial function, measured through brachial artery FMV by use of ultrasound, regarding cardiovascular events in individuals with atherosclerosis. The MEDLINE, SCIELO and LILACS databases were searched, and prospective cohort studies on human beings about the prognostic value of endothelial function, measured by use of brachial artery FMV in individuals with peripheral or coronary atherosclerosis, were selected.
