Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with motor and non-motor impairment. It has been known for a while that oxidative stress, protein changes and mitochondrial dysfunction have the role of contribution to the pathogenesis. Disturbance of red blood cell function may play a role in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

We aimed to identify the fatal pulmonary hemorrhage- (FPH-) related risk factors in stage 3B/C squamous-cell lung carcinoma (SqCLC) patients treated with definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy (C-CRT). Medical records of 505 stage 3B/C SqCLC patients who underwent 66 Gy radiotherapy plus 1-3 cycles of concurrent chemotherapy with available pretreatment thoracic computerized tomography scans were retrospectively analyzed. Primary end-point was the identification of FPH-related risk factors.

An ioMRI-assisted case of cervical intramedullary diffuse glioma resection.

Cancer Manag Res

October 2018

Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Neurosurgery, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA,

Purpose: To date, application of intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (ioMRI) to enhance surgical quality for spinal intramedullary neoplastic lesions has been rarely reported. Moreover, in developing countries or regions, ioMRI accessibility remains very limited. This report describes a technology design of high-field ioMRI accessible for multioperation rooms via a case presentation of an imaging-assisted surgical excision of human cervical spinal cord diffuse glioma.

Background: Biotin-thiamine responsive basal ganglia disease (BTBGD) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the SLC19A3 gene and characterized by recurrent sub-acute episodes of encephalopathy that typically starts in early childhood. This study describes characteristic clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of six cases of BTBGD diagnosed with newly identified mutations and genetically confirmed, with very early and different presentations compared to cases in the previous literature.

Methods: Six patients referred from different centers with similar clinical findings were diagnosed with BTBGD with newly identified mutations in the SLC19A3 gene.

The orf virus, a member of poxvirus family, is a zoonotic parapoxvirus endemic in many countries, mostly seen among sheep, goats, oxen, and may be transmitted to humans. Orf virus infections may induce ulceration, papulonodular, pustular, or ecthyma lesions in the skin. Rarely, orf virus provokes extensive vasculoendothelial proliferation by encoding an apparent homolog of the mammalian vascular endothelial growth factor family of molecules.

Aims: Signal peptide-CUB-EGF (epidermal growth factor-like protein) domain-containing protein 1 (SCUBE1) is an experimental marker of ischemia that has been previously studied both in rat models and humans. In this study, we aim to investigate the importance of SCUBE1 levels in ovarian torsion using an ovarian torsion model in rats.

Methods: A total of 18 Sprague-Dawley rats were equally divided into three groups.

Surgical site infections (SSI) are among the most important complications in knee arthroplasty. In this article we aim to retrospectively evaluate effects of preoperative multidisciplinary assessment and treatment of focal infections in primary knee arthroplasty patients operated by a single surgeon in a single center. A total of 93 patients undergoing 120 primary knee arthroplasty operations were included in the study.

Aim: To detect the impact of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and other risk factors for the early prediction of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and to establish a scoring system for ROP prediction by using clinical criteria and serum IGF-1 levels.

Methods: The study was conducted with 127 preterm infants. IGF-1 levels in the 1 day of life, 1, 2, 3 and 4 week of life was analyzed.

Background: The posterior cricoarytenoid muscle is the abductor muscle for the vocal cords and is innerved by the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). The purpose of this study was to present our determination if the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) contributes to the motor innervation of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle.

Methods: We performed electromyographies (EMGs) via needle electrodes on 47 posterior cricoarytenoid muscles from 28 patients during thyroidectomy (9 lobectomies and 19 total thyroidectomies) with intraoperative neural monitoring.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was done to see if using Doppler ultrasound (TV-DUS) helps better diagnose a condition called adenomyosis.
  • They compared results from the ultrasound with actual tissue samples taken from patients.
  • The use of both ultrasound methods together made diagnosing adenomyosis more accurate, with higher success rates in identifying the condition correctly.

Classical understanding of the function of the pharyngeal plexus in humans is that it relies on both motor branches for innervation of the majority of pharyngeal muscles and sensory branches for the pharyngeal wall sensation. To date there has been no reported data on the role of the pharyngeal plexus in vocal cord innervation. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether or not the plexus pharyngeus contributes to the innervation of the vocal cords.
