Despite the discovery of numerous oncogenes in colorectal cancer (CRC), the development of associated drugs is limited, posing a significant challenge for CRC treatment. Identification of novel druggable targets is therefore crucial for the therapeutic development of CRC. Here, we report the first investigation on therapeutics targeting the potent oncogene NUCKS1 to suppress cancer progression.

Guidelines suggest the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) may not be applicable for some populations at risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, data assessing the association of HCC risk factors with LI-RADS major features are lacking. To evaluate whether the association between HCC risk factors and each CT/MRI LI-RADS major feature differs among individuals at-risk for HCC.

Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) measures the polarization state of backscattered light from tissues and provides valuable insights into the birefringence properties of biological tissues. Contrastive unpaired translation (CUT) was used in this study to generate a synthetic PS-OCT image from a single OCT image. The challenges related to extensive data requirements relying on labeled datasets using only pixel-wise correlations that make it difficult to efficiently regenerate the periodic patterns observed in PS-OCT images were addressed.

In 2008 the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) Review of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) recommended that OMFS specialty training should start with second-degree studies. This recommendation has not yet happened. Currently, no OMFS controlled places at medical/dental schools are directly linked to OMFS Specialty Training (ST) posts.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the potential additive effects of measuring serum interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) on enhancing the predictive value of baseline serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels for predicting 12-week antidepressant treatment responses in patients with depressive disorders.

Methods: Serum levels of hsCRP, IL-1β, and IL-6 were measured at baseline in 1086 outpatient participants diagnosed with depressive disorders. Participants initially received monotherapy with antidepressants for the first three weeks, followed by a naturalistic, stepwise pharmacotherapy regimen administered every three weeks up to 12 weeks.

The down-regulation of p21 after long-term CDK4/6 inhibition represents a key mechanism causing resistance to CDK4/6 inhibitors in some tumor cells, while the HDAC inhibitor could upregulate the level of p21. Herein, a series of novel CDK4/6 and HDAC dual-targeting inhibitors based on the moiety of palbociclib were designed and synthesized. Among them, compound N14 potently inhibited CDK4/6 and HDAC1/6 at nanomolar levels and induced cell apoptosis and G/G phase arrest through HDAC-p21-CDK signaling pathway in HuH-7 cell line.

State Key Laboratory of Bioelectronics, School of Biological Science & Medical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, 210009, China.

The diagnostic and prognostic value of quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) in the the onset of postoperative delirium (POD) remains an area of inquiry. We aim to determine whether qEEG could assist in the diagnosis of early POD in cardiac surgery patients. We prospectively studied a cohort of cardiac surgery patients undergoing qEEG for evaluation of altered mental status.

In their 2022 paper Newman et al compared gender diversity between UK surgical specialties. It omitted the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS), which is one of the ten General Medical Council recognised surgical specialties. When challenged, the authors did not provide data for OMFS.

By spending 3-5 years in a single location studying for their second degree, OMFS trainees often put down domestic roots which they are reluctant to pull up to complete their training elsewhere. The universities at which OMFS specialists/trainees obtained their second degrees were assembled using the General Medical Council's OMFS specialist list, the General Dental Council's Dental Register and a database of OMFS trainees and consultants. The second degrees of 818 past and current OMFS specialists/trainees were analysed.

Symptom Burden and Dietary Changes Among Older Adults with Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Curr Oncol

December 2024

Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology, University Medical School, Robert-Koch-Straße 40, 37075 Göttingen, Germany.

Background: Malnutrition has a direct impact on both the toxicities of cancer therapy and the overall survival of oncological patients. However, its prevalence amongst vulnerable groups such as older patients (age ≥ 65 years) is often underestimated. Screening tools recognizing patients at risk are well established, yet they do not take into account that cancer therapy may lead to changes in dietary habits or that therapy's side effects may negatively influence nutritional status.

is a serious health threat because of the rapid progressive evolution of antimicrobial resistance and efficient transmission from zoonotic as well as human sources. Resistance to fluoroquinolones and macrolides is particularly concerning as this compromises the two most effective oral antibiotic agents currently available for human campylobacteriosis. Here, we report on the prevalence and worldwide distribution of the operon , which encodes an efflux pump conferring high levels of combined resistance to fluoroquinolones and macrolides in strains isolated from poultry ( = 75) and children ( = 177).

December 2024

Department of Neurosurgery and Interventional Neuroradiology, Xuanwu Hospital, China International Neuroscience Institute, Capital Medical University, National Center for Neurological Disorders, Beijing, China. (L.J.).

Background: Previous trials have failed to demonstrate the benefits of extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) bypass surgery for patients with carotid or middle cerebral artery occlusion. However, little evidence has focused on the effect of age on prognosis. This study aimed to explore whether EC-IC bypass surgery can provide greater benefits than medical therapy alone in specific age groups.

An NIR-II Two-Photon Excitable AIE Photosensitizer for Precise and Efficient Treatment of Orthotopic Small-Size Glioblastoma.

Adv Mater

December 2024

School of Science and Engineering, Shenzhen Institute of Aggregate Science and Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK-Shenzhen), Shenzhen, Guangdong, 518172, P. R. China.

The existence of residual small-size tumors after surgery is a major factor contributing to the high recurrence rate of glioblastoma (GBM). Conventional adjuvant therapeutics involving both chemotherapy and radiotherapy usually exhibit unsatisfactory efficacy and severe side effects. Recently, two-photon photodynamic therapy (TP-PDT), especially excited by the second near-infrared (NIR-II) light, offers an unprecedented opportunity to address this challenge, attributed to its combinational merits of PDT and TP excitation.

Immunophenotypic analysis on circulating T cells for early diagnosis of lung cancer.

Biomark Res

December 2024

Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Chonnam National University Medical School, Hwasunup, Jeollanamdo, 58128, Republic of Korea.

The immune system continuously interacts with tumors, possibly leading to systemic alterations in circulating immune cells. However, the potential of these cancer-associated changes for diagnostic purposes remains poorly explored. To investigate this, we conducted a comprehensive flow cytometric analysis of 452 peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples from 206 non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, 100 small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients, 94 healthy individuals, and 52 benign lung disease (BLD) patients.
