Background: Infants exposed to HIV but uninfected have altered immune profiles which include heightened systemic inflammation. The mechanism(s) underlying this phenomenon is unknown. Here, we investigated differences in neonatal gut bacterial and viral microbiome and associations with inflammatory biomarkers in plasma.

Background: Immunisation in pregnancy against pertussis can reduce severe disease in infancy. There are few data on the safety and immunogenicity of vaccines given to pregnant women living with HIV and their infants. We aimed to describe the safety and immunogenicity of a tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (TdaP) vaccine containing genetically detoxified pertussis toxin given to pregnant women living with HIV and the effect of the vaccine on infant whole-cell pertussis vaccine responses.

Group B Streptococcus is a bacterium that colonizes in approximately 20% of pregnant women and can be vertically transmitted to newborns, leading to maternal-neonatal adverse outcomes, such as chorioamnionitis, neonatal sepsis, and pneumonia. However, there is currently no agreement on the optimal induction method for this specific population. This study aims to evaluate the safety of a single balloon catheter (BC) in comparison to dinoprostone for labor induction in term pregnant women with group B Streptococcus colonization.

The reproductive tract, as a lumen connected to the outside world, its microbial community is influenced by various factors. The changes in its microbiome are closely related to women's health. The destruction of the micro ecological environment will lead to various infections, such as Bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted infections, adverse pregnancy outcomes, infertility and tumors.

A Challenging Case of Miliary Tuberculosis in Pregnancy.

Int J Mycobacteriol

October 2024

Department of Anaesthesiology, AIIMS, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Miliary tuberculosis (TB) is an uncommon yet severe condition that can pose substantial risks to pregnant women and their unborn child. This case study describes a 22-year-old pregnant female at 23 weeks of gestation presented with breathlessness, fever accompanied by chills, dry cough, and loss of appetite. With no significant comorbidities, her initial symptoms were inconclusive, leading to her initial diagnosis as a case of pyrexia of unknown origin.

Abortion is one of the major threats to the livestock industry, and it also poses significant threats to public health since some of the abortifacient agents are considered zoonotic. (), (), (), and Cache Valley virus (CVV) are recognized as important zoonotic and abortifacient agents of reproductive failure in small ruminants. This study determined the prevalence of these agents in ovine and caprine foetuses in Türkiye.

Maternal group B decreases infant length and alters the early-life microbiome: a prospective cohort study.

Ann Med

December 2025

Department of Laboratory Medicine, Microbiome Medicine Center, Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Background: Maternal colonization with Group B Streptococcus (GBS) disrupts the vaginal microbiota, potentially affecting infant microbiota assembly and growth. While the gut microbiota's importance in infant growth is recognized, the specific effects of maternal GBS on growth remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the effects of maternal vaginal GBS during pregnancy on early infant growth, microbiome, and metabolomics.

Sexually transmitted infection rates are increasing in the United States, with significant increases in the rates of syphilis among patients of reproductive age and, subsequently, congenital syphilis. Syphilis screening is recommended in sexually active patients 15 to 44 years of age in communities with high syphilis rates and in all pregnant patients at the time of diagnosis or prenatal intake, in the third trimester, and at delivery. Screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea is currently recommended in asymptomatic, sexually active patients younger than 25 years, as well as in older patients with risk factors.

Unlabelled: Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) and cervical incompetence (CI) are major contributors to preterm birth, a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Background/objectives: Disorders of the vaginal microbiota, such as bacterial vaginosis, have been associated with an increased risk of PROM, CI, and subsequent preterm birth. Probiotics, particularly Lactobacillus strains, have been proposed as a preventive strategy to restore and maintain a healthy vaginal microbiome.

Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, was the most prevalent arthropod-borne illness globally and posed a significant public health challenge due to its increasing incidence and potential complications. While most patients recovered within one to two weeks, some cases progressed to severe dengue, requiring hospitalization. This case report described a 39-year-old pregnant woman at 27 weeks gestation who developed severe dengue fever complicated by bacterial pneumonia, leading to ICU admission.

Unlabelled: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an abnormal gynecological condition caused by the overgrowth of specific bacteria in the vagina. This study aims to develop a novel method for BV detection by integrating surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with machine learning (ML) algorithms. Vaginal fluid samples were classified as BV positive or BV negative using the BVBlue Test and clinical microscopy, followed by SERS spectral acquisition to construct the data set.

Introduction: Contracting HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and malaria during pregnancy significantly affects the health of the woman, the pregnancy, and the unborn child. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends testing pregnant women for these infections to achieve triple elimination of mother-to-child transmissions. However, this goal has not been fully realized in low- to medium-income countries, primarily due to segmented testing practices.

Background: Reportable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have increased in California, with dramatic rises in prenatal and congenital syphilis. In response, in 2018 Planned Parenthood Northern California implemented 2 opt-out screening protocols: (1) HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis co-screening for pregnant patients at pregnancy diagnosis and (2) linking HIV and syphilis screening for all patients.

Methods: Using qualitative analyses, we explored implementation barriers and facilitators that can be addressed by clinical leadership and staff to expand uptake of enhanced screening protocols.

Maternal Immune Activation and Endocannabinoid System: Focus on Two-Hit Models of Schizophrenia.

Biol Psychiatry

November 2024

Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Cagliari, 09042 Monserrato, Italy; Unit of Clinical Pharmacology, University Hospital, Cagliari, Italy; Neuroscience Institute, National Research Council of Italy, Section of Cagliari, Italy. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic highlights how infectious diseases can threaten society, especially during pregnancy, when infections can harm maternal health and increase the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children.
  • Maternal immune activation (MIA) from infections is linked to higher risks for disorders like autism and schizophrenia, supported by the two-hit hypothesis which suggests MIA could be the initial trigger for these conditions.
  • Research is examining how MIA interacts with cannabis use during adolescence, considering the endocannabinoid system's role in brain development, though findings show mixed results on whether cannabis exacerbates MIA-related issues in neurodevelopment.
