In the example of a rat model with chronic hepatoencephalopathy (HE), changes in the organ morphology of rats affect the balance of metabolites of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and metabolites of the glutamine-glutamate (Gln-Glu) cycle, namely α-ketoglutarate (αKG) and α-ketoglutaramate (αKGM), as well as the enzymes associated with them, ω-amidase (ωA) and glutamine transaminase (GTK). This model of rats was obtained as a result of 2-22 weeks of consumption by animals of hepatotoxin thioacetamide (TAA) added to drinking water at a concentration of 0.4 g/L.

In this study, we used the Manchurian golden breed of quails. We assessed the efficacy of the food additives of the phytase from encapsulated in the recombinant yeast, which was supplied at a concentration of 500 phytase activity units per kg of the feed. One hundred fifty one-day-old quails were distributed into six treatment groups.

Cheap chicken meat is often used as an undeclared substitute in meat products. In this study, two formats of the immunochromatographic assay (ICA) of immunoglobulins of class Y (IgY) as a biomarker for chicken authentication were developed. In both competitive ICA (cICA) and sandwich ICA (sICA), gold nanoparticles (GNP) were conjugated with anti-species antibodies.

With the objective of developing new methods to acquire diagnostic information, the reconstruction of the broadband absorption coefficient spectra (μ [λ]) of healthy and chromophobe renal cell carcinoma kidney tissues was performed. By performing a weighted sum of the absorption spectra of proteins, DNA, oxygenated, and deoxygenated hemoglobin, lipids, water, melanin, and lipofuscin, it was possible to obtain a good match of the experimental μ (λ) of both kidney conditions. The weights used in those reconstructions were estimated using the least squares method, and assuming a total water content of 77% in both kidney tissues, it was possible to calculate the concentrations of the other tissue components.

The brain diseases account for 30% of all known diseases. Pharmacological treatment is hampered by the blood-brain barrier, limiting drug delivery to the central nervous system (CNS). Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) is a promising technology for treating brain diseases, due to its effectiveness, non-invasiveness, and affordability.

Measurement of photosensitized luminescence of singlet oxygen has been applied to studies of singlet oxygen generation and quenching by C carotenoids (neurosporene, lycopene, rhodopin, and spirilloxanthin) with long chain of conjugated double bonds (CDB) using hexafluorobenzene as a solvent. It has been found that neurosporene, lycopene, and rhodopin are capable of the low efficient singlet oxygen generation in aerated solutions upon photoexcitation in the spectral region of their main absorption maxima. The quantum yield of this process was estimated to be (1.

To make tissue engineering a truly effective tool, it is necessary to understand how the patterns of specific tissue development are modulated by and depend on the artificial environment. Even the most advanced approaches still do not fully meet the requirements of practical engineering of tracheobronchial epithelium. This study aimed to test the ability of the synthetic and natural nonwoven scaffolds to support the formation of morphological sound airway epithelium including the basement membrane (BM).

Oxidative stress is involved in a wide range of age-related diseases. A critical role has been proposed for mitochondrial oxidative stress in initiating or promoting these pathologies and the potential for mitochondria-targeted antioxidants to fight them, making their search and testing a very urgent task. In this study, the mitochondria-targeted antioxidants SkQ1, SkQ3 and MitoQ were examined as they affected isolated rat liver mitochondria and yeast cells, comparing SkQ3 with clinically tested SkQ1 and MitoQ.

This study was aimed at the sensitive immunodetection of porcine myoglobin (MG) as a species-specific biomarker in meat products. The enhanced lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) was created in the sandwich format using monoclonal antibodies (Mab) with specificity to porcine MG and labeled by Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) as peroxidase-mimicking nanozymes. Signal amplification was provided by the colored product of oxidation catalyzed by the PBNPs.

Incorporation of probiotic into a standard yogurt starter culture can drastically improve its health promoting properties. However, besides being an advantage in itself, the incorporation of a new probiotic strain can significantly affect the overall composition of fermented milk. In this article, the effect of incorporation of the probiotic strains (KF1 and MA3) into several standard yogurt starter cultures (consisting of the following strains: 16t and either Lb100 or Lb200) was investigated.

His-tags are protein affinity tags ubiquitously used due to their convenience and effectiveness. However, in some individual cases, the attachment of His-tags to a protein's N- or C-termini resulted in impairment of the protein's structure or function, which led to attempts to include His-tags inside of polypeptide chains. In this work, we describe newly designed internal His-tags, where two triplets of histidine residues are separated by glycine residues to avoid steric hindrances and consequently minimize their impact on the protein structure.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are used to cure and protect bees and apiaries from infections. Consequently, they may contaminate honey and other products of beekeeping. In this study, a highly sensitive immunoenzyme assay (EIA) was for the first time developed for the determination of a fluoroquinolone flumequine (FLU) in honey.

Transition of Mycolicibacterium smegmatis (Msm) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis to dormancy in vitro is accompanied by an accumulation of free methylated forms of porphyrins (tetramethyl coproporphyrin - TMC) localized in the cell wall of dormant bacteria. A study of the fluorescence anisotropy of BODIPY based fluorescent probes on individual cell level using confocal microscope revealed significant changes in this parameter for BODIPY FL C16 from 0.05 to 0.

Tropomyosin (Tpm) is a regulatory actin-binding protein involved in Ca activation of contraction of striated muscle. In human slow skeletal muscles, two distinct Tpm isoforms, γ and β, are present. They interact to form three types of dimeric Tpm molecules: γγ-homodimers, γβ-heterodimers, or ββ-homodimers, and a majority of the molecules are present as γβ-Tpm heterodimers.

Cell-to-cell transport of plant viruses through plasmodesmata (PD) requires viral movement proteins (MPs) often associated with cell membranes. The genome of the encodes two MPs, BMB1 and BMB2, which enable virus cell-to-cell transport. BMB2 is known to localize to PD-associated membrane bodies (PAMBs), which are derived from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) structures, and to direct BMB1 to PAMBs.

Dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) are important physiological derivatives of nitric oxide. These complexes have a wide range of biological activities, with antioxidant and antiradical ones being of particular interest and importance. We studied the interaction between DNICs associated with the dipeptide L-carnosine or serum albumin and prooxidants under conditions mimicking oxidative stress.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is widely used as a plasticizer in the production of polymeric materials to give them flexibility, strength and extensibility. However, due to its negative impact on human health, in particular reproductive functions and fetal development, the content of DBP must be controlled in food and the environment. The present study aims to develop a sensitive, fast and simple fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) using monoclonal antibodies derived against DBP (MAb-DBP) for its detection in open waters.
