Physiological calcification occurs in bones and epiphyseal cartilage as they grow, whereas ectopic calcification occurs in blood vessels, cartilage, and soft tissues. Although it was formerly thought to be a passive and degenerative process associated with aging, ectopic calcification has been identified as an active cell-mediated process resembling osteogenesis, and an increasing number of studies have provided evidence for this paradigm shift. A significant association between vascular calcification and cardiovascular risk has been demonstrated by various studies, which have shown that arterial calcification has predictive value for future coronary events.

In a rapidly changing thermal environment, reptiles are primarily dependent on in situ adaptation because of their limited ability to disperse and the restricted opportunity to shift their ranges. However, the rapid pace of climate change may surpass these adaptation capabilities or elevate energy expenditures. Therefore, understanding the variability in thermal traits at both individual and population scales is crucial, offering insights into reptiles' vulnerability to climate change.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how mechanical confinement affects the migration of breast cancer (BC) cells, linking this to specific genomic signals and behaviors.
  • Researchers used 3D microfluidic devices to analyze the migration of seven BC cell lines and found that 715 genes correlated with their migratory abilities, highlighting TNF-α as a significant regulator.
  • The TNF-α/TNFR1 signaling pathway was identified as crucial for the migration of triple-negative, mesenchymal-like BC cells, suggesting it could be an effective target for therapy to combat tumor spread and metastasis.

Calcium titanate (CTO) photocatalysts were synthesized using a sol-gel method by adopting a cost-efficient, rapid calcination technique. The CTOs were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, porosimetry measurements, scanning/transmission electron microscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Their photocatalytic activity was assessed through the photocatalytic degradation of phenol, oxalic acid, and chlorophenol under UV light exposure, using a commercial CTO as a reference.

Personality disorders and their association with adverse childhood events.

Curr Opin Psychiatry

January 2025

Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania; The International Institute for the Advanced Studies of Psychotherapy and Applied Mental Health, Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Purpose Of Review: Theoretical models of personality disorders (PDs) highlight the role of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the development and maintenance of personality pathology. This review presents recent studies on the associations between childhood adversity and PDs, while discussing mechanisms and factors that impact these relationships.

Recent Findings: Studies point to small to moderate associations between childhood adversity and cluster A, cluster B, and cluster C PDs, and some research suggests that childhood adversity could be a predictor for the onset and development of personality pathology.

Background: Craniospinal irradiation (CSI) is a complex radiotherapy (RT) technique required for treating specific brain tumors and some hematologic malignancies. With large volumes of hematogenous bone marrow (BM) being irradiated, CSI could cause acute hematologic toxicity, leading to treatment interruptions or severe complications. We report on the dynamics and dose/volume predictors of hematologic toxicity during CSI.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provides insights into cognitive processes with significant clinical potential. However, delays in brain region communication and dynamic variations are often overlooked in functional network studies. We demonstrate that networks extracted from fMRI cross-correlation matrices, considering time lags between signals, show remarkable reliability when focusing on statistical distributions of network properties.

Sci Rep

August 2024

Research in Individual Differences and Legal Psychology (RIDDLE) Lab, Department of Psychology, Babeș-Bolyai University, Republicii, 37, 400015, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

A growing body of research highlights the continuum between dark and bright personality traits impacting individual prosocial or antisocial tendencies. However, the interplay between personality dimensions and actual criminal behavior and its reoccurrence is not fully elucidated. We aimed to explore the cumulative predictive value of the bright and dark core of personality for criminal history in differentiating a general community sample (N = 282) from a large sample of inmates (N = 296), with (n = 129) or without (n = 167) criminal history while controlling for age, sex and impression management.

Large gas bubbles can reach the surface of pools of mud and lava where they burst, often through the formation and expansion of circular holes. Bursting bubbles release volatiles and generate spatter, and hence play a key role in volcanic degassing and volcanic edifice construction. Here, we study the ascent and rupture of bubbles using a combination of field observations at Pâclele Mici (Romania), laboratory experiments with mud from the Imperial Valley (California, USA), numerical simulations and theoretical models.

Department of Ecology, University of Debrecen, Egyetem sqr. 1, 4032 Debrecen, Hungary; HUN-REN-UD Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Research Group, Egyetem sqr. 1, 4032 Debrecen, Hungary.

Widespread campaigns on forest restoration and various tree planting actions lower the awareness of the importance of grasslands for carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation. Even lower attention is given to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in remnants of ancient, so-called pristine grasslands. Pristine grasslands generally harbour high biodiversity, and even small patches can act as important refuges for many plant and animal species in urbanised or agricultural landscapes.
