One of the leading challenges in Water Resource Recovery Facility monitoring and control is the poor data quality and sensor consistency due to the tough and complex circumstances of the process operation. This paper presents a new principal component analysis fault detection approach for the nitrate and nitrite concentration sensor based on Water Resource Recovery Facility measurements, together with the Fisher Discriminant Analysis identification of fault types. Five malfunction cases were considered: constant additive error, ramp changing error in time, incorrect amplification error, random additive error, and unchanging sensor value error.

PeerJ

June 2024

Research Institute for Sustainability and Disaster Management Based on High-Performance Computing, Faculty of Environmental Science and Engineering, Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Background: This review reveals the role of linear economy prevalence and mismanagement practices in plastic pollution of aquatic and terrestrial environments and related knowledge gaps in Romania while outlining downstream and upstream solutions to reduce plastic pollution and adopt circular economy strategies. Thus, the major aim of this study is the investigation of the stage of scientific knowledge concerning all these demands in the Romanian context.

Methodology: This work integrates two main approaches: (i) a bibliometric analysis fed by Web of Science and Scopus databases to reveal the current coverage of peer-reviewed literature related to plastic waste in Romania and (ii) a subject-based review to underline the main themes related to plastic waste management, plastic pollution, and mitigating options in Romania in line with circular economy principles.

Cariprazine-the only single antipsychotic drug in the market which can handle all symptoms of bipolar I disorder-involves trans-4-substituted cyclohexane-1-amine as a key structural element. In this work, production of trans-4-substituted cyclohexane-1-amines was investigated applying transaminases either in diastereotope selective amination starting from the corresponding ketone or in diastereomer selective deamination of their diasteromeric mixtures. Transaminases were identified enabling the conversion of the cis-diastereomer of four selected cis/trans-amines with different 4-substituents to the corresponding ketones.

In this comprehensive study of 15 deceased patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, spanning a time frame of 1 to 68 days from confirmation to death, autopsies were meticulously conducted with stringent safety measures. Clinical, laboratory, histopathological, and molecular analyses were integrated, shedding light on diverse pulmonary lesions, including acute inflammatory changes, vascular abnormalities, and aberrant regenerative processes. Immunohistochemical analysis, utilizing various markers, successfully identified the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid antigen within infected tissue cells and also revealed what type of inflammatory cells are involved in COVID-19 pathogenesis.

Historically, Romania is known as a mining site of mineral substances, including gold, silver, copper, lead, zin, uranium, manganese, salt, and coal, whereby their long periods of exploitation and extraction affected human health and the environment in various ways. In Moldova Nouă southwest region of Romania, we investigated the environmental impacts of mining activities on air quality over 2021. We quantified PM emission rates through in situ monitoring, dispersion modelling, and horizontal and vertical fluxes.

A new clustering method based on multipartite networks.

PeerJ Comput Sci

October 2023

Center for the Study of Complexity, Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Cluj Napoca, Cluj, Romania.

The clustering problem is one of the most studied and challenging in machine learning, as it attempts to identify similarities within data without any prior knowledge. Among modern clustering algorithms, the network-based ones are some of the most popular. Most of them convert the data into a graph in which instances of the data represent the nodes and a similarity measure is used to add edges.

Optimization Workflow of Fumonisin Esterase Production for Biocatalytic Degradation of Fumonisin B.

Life (Basel)

September 2023

Research and Development Laboratory, Dr. Bata Ltd., Bajcsy-Zsilinszky utca 139, H-2364 Ócsa, Hungary.

Industrial enzyme production with the expression system requires a well-characterized production strain and a competitively priced fermentation medium to meet the expectations of the industry. The present work shows a workflow that allows the rapid and reliable screening of transformants of single copy insertion of the target production cassette. A constitutive expression system with the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase promoter () with homology arms for the glycerol kinase 1 () was constructed for the targeted integration of the expression plasmid in a deficient and the production of a bacterial fumonisin esterase enzyme (CFE).

COVID-19 vaccination preferences during a pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine administration.

Vaccine X

December 2023

Department of Biostatistics, School of Public Health, University of Michigan, 1415 Washington Heights, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, USA.

In April 2021, the US paused Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 vaccination because of reported blood clots post vaccination. This paper explores how vaccine decision-making--receiving a J&J vaccine right away vs waiting for a Pfizer vaccine--changed during the pause. In an opt-in internet-based survey April 2021 with 915 participants, 37 % were not vaccinated.

In lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolutions (KRs), the choice of immobilization support and acylating agents (AAs) is crucial. Lipase B from immobilized onto magnetic nanoparticles (CaLB-MNPs) has been successfully used for diverse KRs of racemic compounds, but there is a lack of studies of the utilization of this potent biocatalyst in the KR of chiral amines, important pharmaceutical building blocks. Therefore, in this work, several racemic amines (heptane-2-amine, 1-methoxypropan-2-amine, 1-phenylethan-1-amine, and 4-phenylbutan-2-amine, (±)--, respectively) were studied in batch and continuous-flow mode utilizing different AAs, such as diisopropyl malonate , isopropyl 2-cyanoacetate , and isopropyl 2-ethoxyacetate .

Background: Although many studies testify to consumer behavior's role in the context of waste-related sustainability objectives, little research examined what people know, think, and feel about the environmental impacts of their personal protective equipment (PPE) or their behavior towards them, in general. Therefore, the present article complements existing information about the public perceptions, knowledge, and behavior of single-use masks in a context where the pandemic has put increasing pressure on waste management public services. From February to June 2020, municipal solid waste increased ten times in Romania.

The increasing application of recombinant enzymes demands not only effective and sustainable fermentation, but also highly efficient downstream processing and further stabilization of the enzymes by immobilization. In this study, a novel approach for the isolation and immobilization of His-tagged transaminase from Chromobacterium violaceum (CvTA) has been developed. A recombinant of CvTA was simultaneously isolated and immobilized by binding on silica nanoparticles (SNPs) with metal affinity linkers and additionally within poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibers.

Our study addresses the problematics of magnetic skyrmions, nanometer-size vortex-like swirling topological defects, broadly studied today for applications in classic, neuromorphic and quantum information technologies. We tackle some challenging issues of material properties versus skyrmion stability and manipulation within a multiple-scale modeling framework, involving complementary ab-initio and micromagnetic frameworks. Ab-initio calculations provide insight into the anatomy of the magnetic anisotropy, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya asymmetric exchange interaction (DMI) and their response to a gating electric field.
