The insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a pleiotropic hormone that regulates essential life-history traits and is known for its major contribution to determining individual ageing processes. High levels of IGF-1 have been linked to increased mortality and are hypothesised to cause oxidative stress. This effect has been observed in laboratory animals, but whether it pertains to wild vertebrates has not been tested.

Recent advances in machine learning methods for materials science have significantly enhanced accurate predictions of the properties of novel materials. Here, we explore whether these advances can be adapted to drug discovery by addressing the problem of prospective validation - the assessment of the performance of a method on out-of-distribution data. First, we tested whether k-fold n-step forward cross-validation could improve the accuracy of out-of-distribution small molecule bioactivity predictions.

Background And Aims: Radiofrequency ablation of unresectable pancreatic tumors represents a palliative method in selected patients. The lack of standardization of the technique used as well as the non-homogeneous immediate and long-term results from the reports in the literature made us evaluate in a pilot study the application of a standardized technique through a surgical approach, with the evaluation of the immediate and long-term results.

Methods: Ten consecutive patients diagnosed with unresectable nonmetastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma were referred for radio-frequency ablation by surgical approach.

Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Babeş-Bolyai University, 11 Arany Janos str., 400028 Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Electronic address:

Novel (N-arylamino)phenothiazinium dyes containing meta-substituted-arylamine auxochrome units were successfully obtained by applying a sonochemical protocol designed for a more efficient energy usage in the preparation of methylene blue (MB) analogues. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the spatial arrangement in aggregated crystalline state of (N-(meta-bromoaryl)amino)phenothiazinium dye with minor variances induced by the nature of the halogenide counterion (iodide or chloride). The optical UV-vis properties of the novel (N-arylamino)phenothiazinium dyes were comparable to those of the parent MB, with the longest wavelength absorption maxima situated in the visible range (640-680 nm), large molar extinction coefficients (log ε = 4.

The Arctic, an essential ecosystem on Earth, is subject to pronounced anthropogenic pressures, most notable being the climate change and risks of crude oil pollution. As crucial elements of Arctic environments, benthic microbiomes are involved in climate-relevant biogeochemical cycles and hold the potential to remediate upcoming contamination. Yet, the Arctic benthic microbiomes are among the least explored biomes on the planet.

National Institute for Research and Development of Isotopic and Molecular Technologies, 67-103 Donat Street, 400293 Cluj-Napoca, Romania; Faculty of Physics, Babeș-Bolyai University, Kogălniceanu 1, 400084 Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Electronic address:

The present study proposes the development of new wine recognition models based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) applied to the mid-level data fusion of H NMR and Raman data. In this regard, a supervised machine learning method, namely Support Vector Machines (SVMs), was applied for classifying wine samples with respect to the cultivar, vintage, and geographical origin. Because the association between the two data sources generated an input space with a high dimensionality, a feature selection algorithm was employed to identify the most relevant discriminant markers for each wine classification criterion, before SVM modeling.

Honey adulteration represents a worldwide problem, driven by the illicit economic gain that producers, traders, or merchants pursue. Among the falsification methods that can unfairly influence the price is the incorrect declaration of the botanical origin and harvesting year. Therefore, the present study aimed to test the potential given by the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for developing prediction models able to assess honey botanical origin and harvesting year based on isotope and elemental fingerprints.

Institute of Materials Science, Bioinspired Materials and Biosensor Technologies, Kiel University, Kaiserstraße 2, 24143 Kiel, Germany.

Polyglutamine (polyQ) disorders are a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by the excessive expansion of CAG (cytosine, adenine, guanine) repeats within host proteins. The quest to unravel the complex diseases mechanism has led researchers to adopt both theoretical and experimental methods, each offering unique insights into the underlying pathogenesis. This review emphasizes the significance of combining multiple approaches in the study of polyQ disorders, focusing on the structure-function correlations and the relevance of polyQ-related protein dynamics in neurodegeneration.

Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, "Victor Babes" University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timisoara, Timisoara, Romania; Department of Oncology and Hematology, "Louis Turcanu" Emergency Clinical Hospital for Children, Timisoara, Romania.

Article Synopsis
  • Silibinin (SIL) from Silybum marianum has beneficial effects but suffers from low stability and bioavailability, prompting the research into its derivatives, silibilin oleate (SIL-O) and silibilin linoleate (SIL-L), as prodrugs for better biomedical applications.
  • Characterization techniques like DFT calculations and NMR confirmed the successful formation of SIL-O and SIL-L, showing they have lower drug-likeness scores than SIL but still a positive overall drug score with no severe side effects expected.
  • While SIL-O showed no toxicity at low concentrations, SIL-L was more toxic at high doses, particularly affecting certain cell types and demonstrating a slight irritant effect; thus,
