Land degradation (LD) is driven by many factors resulting from the intricate interplay between natural and socio-economic systems, which adds dynamism and complexity to this phenomenon. The study highlights LD as a source of social vulnerability in the Baragan Plain (Romania), often called the "granary of Europe" due to its century-long history of industrial crop production. We explore the community's perceptions of vulnerability due to LD and the community-based solutions to sustainable transformations through governance using a community-based causal-effect analysis (CBCEA).

We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of six novel arylarsonate-containing polyoxomolybdates with fluorinated-functionalities in the position of the phenyl ring. The reaction of the various arylarsonic acids, RAsOH [ = 4-F-CH (H), 4-FC-CH (H), 4-FCO-CH (H)] with NaMoO·2HO in aqueous pH 3 solution resulted in the heteropoly-6-molybdates [{(4-F-CH)As}MoO(HO)] (), [{(4-FC-CH)As}MoO] () and [{(4-FCO-CH)As}MoO(HO)] (), which were isolated as guanidinium salts. When the reaction was performed in aqueous pH 1 solution the inverted-Keggin type heteropoly-12-molydates [{(4-F-CH)As}MoO] (), [{(4-FC-CH)As}MoO] () and [{(4-FCO-CH)As}MoO] (), were obtained and isolated as sodium salts.

Artificial water channels (AWCs) have been extensively explored to mimic natural proteins, which enables to effectively transport water while blocking ions. As one of the first AWCs, self-assembled I-quartets (HCx) have showcased high water-permselectivity that can be enhanced by improving their distribution and stability within membrane. The use of long alkyl chains (n>8) is constrained by their low solubility and aggregation.

The essential L,D-transpeptidase of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Ldt) catalyses the formation of 3 3 cross-links in cell wall peptidoglycan and is a target for development of antituberculosis therapeutics. Efforts to inhibit Ldt have been hampered by lack of knowledge of how it binds its substrate. To address this gap, we optimised the isolation of natural disaccharide tetrapeptide monomers from the Corynebacterium jeikeium bacterial cell wall through overproduction of the peptidoglycan sacculus.

Portal hypertension-related complications increase mortality in patients, irrespective of its etiology. Classically, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) was used to assess the portal venous system and collaterals, considering size and hemodynamic parameters, which correlate with portal hypertension (PH) and related complications. Furthermore, therapeutic EUS guides treatment interventions, such as embolization of the gastric varices through coil placement and tissue adhesive injection, yielding encouraging clinical results.

The influence of inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) exposure on photosynthetic microorganisms and their pigments remains understudied. Here, we employed resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopy to investigate the responses of two freshwater phytoplankton species, the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and the diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana to Hg(II) exposure. We selectively recorded the spectral RR signature of carotenoids in intact cells exposed to concentrations of 10 nM and 100 nM of Hg(II), representative for contaminated environment and unexposed control cells.

Genetic factors play a significant role in the pathogenesis of mitral valve diseases, including mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and mitral valve regurgitation. Genes like Fibrillin-1 (FBN1), Filamin A (FLNA), matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), and SRY-box transcription factor 9 (SOX9) are known to influence mitral valve pathology but knowledge of the exact mechanism is far from clear. Data regarding serum parameters, transesophageal echocardiography, and genetic and histopathologic parameters were investigated in 54 patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery for mitral valve regurgitation.

While most studies focused on the impact of intensive agriculture on the barn owl's diet, little is known about the effect of cropland abandonment. We compared the taxon composition/evenness and feeding guild structure of small mammal prey identified in pellets collected before (2004) and after (2012) the abandonment of 9% of cultivated fields within a cultural landscape. Data on prey abundance per pellet were analysed through non-metric multidimensional scaling and permutational, paired tests.

The highly demanded calcium acetate (Ca(CHCOO)) for biomedicine and various industries constantly requires green and low-cost methods of synthesis. In the present work, a sustainable approach to produce Ca(CHCOO) is reported as a proof of concept, processing for the first time as a starting material the worldwide highly abundant shells, which is a neglected biogenic waste with high economical potential due to the rich mineral and organic pigmentary content. A green synthesis involving an eco-friendly acetic acid has been optimized at room temperature, without any additional energy consumption, and the resulting saturated Ca(CHCOO) solution was further slowly evaporated in three stages to obtain white Ca(CHCOO) crystalline powder, without impurity traces.
