Avulsion of the Flexor Digitorum Profundus Tendon During the Curettage of a Recurrent Enchondroma: A Case Report.

Enchondroma rarely occurs in the distal phalanx, and avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon in this area is also rare. We report a case of recurrent enchondroma in the distal phalanx, which required reconstruction for an accidental FDP avulsion during surgery. A 36-year-old right-handed woman visited our hospital with a suspected recurrence of enchondroma and a planned surgery.

Computed Tomography Investigation of First Metacarpal Subsidence After Suture Button Suspensionplasty: A Report of Two Cases.

Rare Case of Open Comminuted Scaphoid Fracture Dislocation: Treatment With Free Bone Graft and Locking Plate.

To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports in the literature of an open comminuted scaphoid fracture dislocation. We present such a rare case. The case report illustrates the case of a 58-year-old right-handed press operator who injured his left wrist when his hand got caught in a press machine.

Rationale and Design of Prospective, Multicenter, Double-Arm Clinical Trial to Investigate the Efficacy of Tofogliflozin on Left Ventricular Diastolic Dysfunction in Patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (TOP-HFPEF Trial).

Background: Recent large clinical trials have revealed that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors improve cardiovascular outcomes not only in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, but also in patients with heart failure with mildly reduced or preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). However, the effect of SGLT2 inhibitors on left ventricular (LV) diastolic function is still controversial.

Methods And Results: The TOP-HFPEF trial (Efficacy of Tofogliflozin on Left Ventricular Diastolic Dysfunction in Patients with Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus) is a multicenter, double-arm, open-label, confirmatory, investigator-initiated clinical study to investigate the effect of SGLT2 inhibitor on LV diastolic function in patients with HFpEF and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Intraosseous Ganglion Spanning the Scaphoid and Lunate: A Case Report.

Intraosseous ganglions (IOGs) are actually quite common but one spanning two adjacent carpal bones is uncommon. We report a case with an IOG spanning the scaphoid and lunate, which was treated surgically. A 16-year-old right-handed female noticed left wrist pain that started spontaneously five years previously.

[Two Cases of Advanced Recurrent Breast Cancer with Severe Heart Failure Caused By Anthracycline].

Case 1: A 48-year-old woman, had right breast cancer with multiple liver metastases. Seven courses of paclitaxel plus bevacizumab were administered, but due to disease progression, 12 courses of FEC 75(total epirubicin 900 mg/m2)were administered. 2 months after the last FEC administration, the patient developed heart failure and died about 3 months later.

Preoperative Frailty Assessed Comprehensively by a Questionnaire Predicts a Poor Survival Following Curative Resection of Gastric Cancer.

Background/aim: The concept of frailty has been attracting attention as a comprehensive indicator of the various effects of aging, but no conclusion has been reached on how to evaluate it. The present study investigated the adverse effect of preoperative frailty on short- and long-term outcomes in patients with gastric cancer using a questionnaire about frailty.

Patients And Methods: One hundred and twenty-five patients with pathological stage (p Stage) I/II/III who underwent radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer at the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, Osaka, Japan from April 2015 to December 2016 were enrolled in this study.

Impact of laparoscopic surgery on short-term and long-term outcomes in elderly obese patients with colon cancer.

Background: Laparoscopic surgery is reported to be useful in obese or elderly patients with colon cancer, who are at increased risk of postoperative complications because of comorbidities and physical decline. However, its usefulness is less clear in patients who are both elderly and obese and may be at high risk of complications.

Methods: Data for obese patients (body mass index ≥25) who underwent laparoscopic or open surgery for stage II or III colon cancer between January 2009 and December 2013 were collected by the Japan Society of Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery.

Background: We surgically treated comminuted radial head and neck fractures using headless compression screws, including multiple screws for the radial head and a single oblique screw for the radial neck. Reduction of influenza in Osaka, Japan during the COVID-19 outbreak: a population-based ORION registry study.

Objectives: The spread of COVID-19 has affected the incidence of other infectious diseases, but there are no reports of studies using comprehensive regional population-based data to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on influenza incidence. We attempted to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on influenza using the population-based ORION (Osaka Emergency Information Research Intelligent Operation Network) registry.

Methods: The ORION registry of emergency patients treated by emergency medical service (EMS) personnel was developed by the Osaka Prefecture government.

Is Repair of a Small Coronoid Fracture Required in the Surgical Treatment of Terrible Triad Injury of the Elbow?

Multiple treatment protocols have been described in literature for the treatment of terrible triad injury (TTI) of the elbow. We believe that repair of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) should be performed in preference to repair of a small coronoid fracture if the elbow is unstable after fixation/replacement of the radial head and repair of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL). The aim of this study is to report the outcomes of surgical treatment of patients with TTI associated with a small coronoid fracture in whom the coronoid fracture was not addressed.

Incidence and Mortality of Emergency Patients Transported by Emergency Medical Service Personnel during the Novel Corona Virus Pandemic in Osaka Prefecture, Japan: A Population-Based Study.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic affects the emergency medical service (EMS) system, little is known about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prognosis of emergency patients. This study aimed to reveal the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the EMS system and patient outcomes. We included patients transported by ambulance who were registered in a population-based registry of patients transported by ambulance.

Indications for computed tomography use and frequency of traumatic abnormalities based on real-world data of 2405 pediatric patients with minor head trauma.

Background: In pediatric patients with minor head trauma, computed tomography (CT) is often performed beyond the scope of recommendations that are based on existing algorithms. Herein, we evaluated pediatric patients with minor head trauma who underwent CT examinations, quantified its frequency, and determined how often traumatic findings were observed in the intracranial region or skull.

Reliability and laterality of the soleus H-reflex following galvanic vestibular stimulation in healthy individuals.

The vestibulospinal tract (VST) plays an important role in the control of the ipsilateral antigravity muscles, and the balance of left and right VST excitability is important in human postural control. A method for measuring VST excitability is the application of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) before tibial nerve stimulation that evokes the soleus H-reflex; the change rate of the H-reflex amplitude is then evaluated. Assessments of VST excitability and the left and right balance could be useful when determining the pathology for interventions in postural control impairments.

[A Case of Metastatic Breast Cancer That Recovered from Diffuse Alveolar Damage Associated with Everolims].

A 68-year-old woman was receiving chemotherapy and endocrine therapy for right breast cancer postoperative pulmonary metastasis and local lymph node recurrence. However, she developed interstitial pneumonia 12 weeks after initiating treatment with everolimus and exemestane. Treatment with everolimus and exemestane was discontinued and steroid pulse therapy was initiated; however, she required ventilator management because of the severity of the pneumonia.

Case 1: A 73-year-old man underwent total gastrectomy for residual gastric cancer, and final pathological diagnosis was pStage ⅠB. Adjuvant chemotherapy was not performed. CT findings showed multiple liver metastasis 16 months after procedure.

A Case of Hemorrhagic Cholecystitis and Hemobilia Under Anticoagulation Therapy.

BACKGROUND Hemorrhagic cholecystitis is a rare disease which can be fatal in some cases. Hemorrhagic cholecystitis can sometimes be confused with common biliary diagnoses, as its symptoms imitate other hepatobiliary diseases. We report a case of hemorrhagic cholecystitis with hemobilia caused by the administration of anticoagulant agents.
