Purpose: Since extract of the laminated layer (LL) from E. granulosus showed immuno-modulatory effects in vitro and in vivo, we sought to determine its effect on the onset, development, and evolution of experimental auto-immune uveitis (EAU). The latter is a model of some human diseases with ocular inflammation that can cause blindness.

Introduction: Compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency caused by elevated pressure within a closed fascial compartment, leading to compromised tissue perfusion and the potential for irreversible damage if not treated promptly. This report presents a rare case of upper limb compartment syndrome in a COVID-19 patient on anticoagulation therapy following multiple failed venipuncture attempts. This work has been reported in line with the SCARE criteria.

Introduction: Effective medication adherence, is a real global challenge that emerges as a pivotal factor influencing asthma control, exacerbation frequency, hospitalization rates and ultimately, mortality, morbidity and health care costs. In light of this, our study aimed to assess therapeutic adherence levels among asthmatic patients and identify factors contributing to non-adherence.

Methods: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional multicenter study, among asthmatic patients receiving outpatient or inpatient care across seven asthma centers located in two Algerian cities: Algiers (University Hospital Center of Benimessous, University Hospital Center of Bab el oued,EPSP of Zeralda, EPSP of Beraki and EPSP of Rouiba) and Constantine (Constantine University Hospital Center (CHU), EPSP of Constantine), between July and December 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how well certain oxidative stress biomarkers can predict kidney graft function at 6 months and 1 year post-transplant, using data from patients who received living donor kidneys.
  • Blood samples were collected at various times after the transplant to measure levels of specific biomarkers, and renal function was evaluated using the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
  • The findings suggest that measuring nitric oxide levels at day 6, along with donor age and eGFR at various points, can effectively predict graft function at the 6-month mark.

Crucial Interactions between Altered Plasma Trace Elements and Fatty Acids Unbalance Ratio to Management of Systemic Arterial Hypertension in Diabetic Patients: Focus on Endothelial Dysfunction.

Int J Mol Sci

August 2024

Bioenergetics and Intermediary Metabolism Team, Laboratory of Biology and Organism Physiology, Biological Sciences Faculty, Nutrition and Pathologies Post Graduate School, Houari Boumediene University of Sciences and Technology (USTHB), Bab Ezzouar, Algiers 16123, Algeria.

The coexistence of SAH with T2DM is a common comorbidity. In this study, we investigated the link between altered plasma antioxidant trace elements (ATE: manganese, selenium, zinc, and copper) and fatty acids ratio (FAR: polyunsaturated/saturated) imbalance as transition biomarkers between vascular pathology (SAH) to metabolic pathology (T2DM). Our data revealed strong correlation between plasma ATE and FAR profile, which is modified during SAH-T2DM association compared to the healthy group.

Purpose: In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the use of flow cytometry (FCM) in the diagnosis of inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) at a single center in Algeria. Sharing insights into our practical experience, we present FCM based diagnostic approaches adapted to different clinical scenarios.

Methods: Between May 2017 and February 2024, pediatric and adult patients presenting with clinical features suggestive of immunodeficiency were subjected to FCM evaluation, including lymphocyte subset analysis, detection of specific surface or intracellular proteins, and functional analysis of immune cells.

Aims: Whereas recommendations to optimize performance and yield of cardiac scintigraphy studies with bone-seeking tracers have been published, little is known about real-world adherence to these best practices, especially outside North America and Europe. Accordingly, we described imaging practices with this modality in a sample of nuclear laboratories in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region.

Methods And Results: Laboratories performing radionuclide imaging for cardiac amyloidosis in the MENA region were invited to participate in this study to describe installed camera systems, type and dose of bone-avid tracers used, imaging protocols, and criteria used for study interpretation.

Glyphosate is an endocrine disruptor and can act on the activity of certain enzymes of metabolism subsequently altering some functions such as reproduction. The goal of the present study is to evaluate the involvement of glyphosate based-herbicide (GBH) in spermatogenesis disruption and to investigate which cells of the adult Wistar rat testis are most affected by short-term exposure to GBH. Treated groups received a diluted solution of GBH orally for 21 days (D1: 102.

July 2023

Team "Cytokines and NOsynthase, Immunity and Pathogenicity", Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene, BP 32 El Alia, Bab Ezzouar, 16111, Algiers, Algeria. Electronic address:

The effect of helminthic infections on allergic diseases and asthma is still inconclusive. Moreover, there is considerable evidence suggesting that nitric oxide (NO), metalloproteinases and pro-inflammatory cytokines play a significant role in the physiopathology of these diseases. In this sense, the aim of our study is to investigate the ex vivo immunomodulatory effect of the laminated layer (LL, outside layer of parasitic cyst) of the helminth Echinococcus granulosus on NO, IL-17A and IL-10 production.

Article Synopsis
  • Autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis (ARCI) is a skin disorder characterized by abnormal scaling and has three main forms: lamellar ichthyosis, congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, and harlequin ichthyosis.
  • The condition is caused by mutations in several genes, with the most severe form (harlequin ichthyosis) primarily linked to specific mutations in one gene, which can also lead to the other two forms.
  • A study involving 64 patients identified 34 novel mutations, expanding the known mutations associated with this condition and showing a connection between the type of mutation and the severity of the skin condition.

Internal Medicine Department, University of Algiers 1, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Benyoucef Benkhedda, Bab El Oued University Hospital Center, 16000, Bab El Oued City, Algiers, Algeria.

Objective: This study was performed to develop a new diagnostic algorithm for adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD).

Methods: We conducted a multicenter prospective nationwide case-control study in tertiary Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, and Infectious Diseases departments, to include successively patients with suspected AOSD based on the presence of two or more major criteria of Yamaguchi and/or Fautrel classifications. Patients were classified as AOSD or controls according to a predefined procedure.

Tumors secreting catecholamines, such as pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas, are rare and life-threatening, due to their complications. They can be sporadic or occur in genetic syndromes, such as von Hippel-Lindau in which pheochromocytomas are observed in 10 to 20%. We report a case of a 42 years old male, who was sent in 2016 to our department for neurological symptoms related to cerebellar and central vestibular syndromes.
