Comparison of treatment results between microvascular decompression and gamma knife radiosurgery in primary trigeminal neuralgia.

This study aims to analyze and evaluate the comparative clinical outcomes associated with microvascular decompression (MVD) and gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS), focusing on pain relief, pain recurrence, and complications encountered in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Among 155 surgical procedures performed for TN (90 GKRS, and 65 MVD) between March 1997 and December 2020, the exclusion criteria encompassed prior surgical interventions, the presence of other pathological conditions such as tumors, vascular diseases, and multiple sclerosis, as well as patients who were lost to follow-up. Ultimately, 101 patients received their initial treatment for primary TN (47 GKRS, and 54 MVD) and were followed up for more than 1 year.

Effect of telmisartan on an experimental model of periodontitis in mice.

Objective: This study was performed to explore the impact of telmisartan on experimental periodontitis in mice, in terms of alveolar bone destruction, by using micro-computed tomography analysis.

Materials And Methods: Male BALB/c mice were divided into four groups of 7 to 9 mice each: control (C) group; experimental periodontitis (E) group; experimental periodontitis-plus-telmisartan 5 mg/kg (ET5) group; and experimental periodontitis-plus-telmisartan 10 mg/kg (ET10) group. The mice in Group C were not subjected to experimental periodontitis.

Personalized Prediction of Kidney Function Decline and Network Analysis of the Risk Factors after Kidney Transplantation Using Nationwide Cohort Data.

We developed a machine-learning-based model that could predict a decrease in one-year graft function after kidney transplantation, and investigated the risk factors of the decreased function. A total of 4317 cases were included from the Korean Organ Transplant Registry (2014−2019). An XGBoost model was trained to predict the recipient’s one-year estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below 45 mL/min/1.

SH3YL1 protein as a novel biomarker for diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Background And Aims: Oxidative stress contributes to development of diabetic nephropathy. We implicated SH3YL1 in oxidative stress-induced inflammation and examined whether SH3YL1 could be used as a new biomarker of diabetic nephropathy.

Background: A lineage of Klebsiella pneumoniae that produces carbapenemase-2 (KPC-2), sequence type (ST) 307, emerged in 2017. We analyzed the complete sequences of plasmids from KPC-2-producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) ST307, investigated the antimicrobial resistance conferred by this strain, and confirmed the horizontal interspecies transmission of KPC-carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) characteristics among Enterobacteriaceae.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the horizontal propagation pathway of a highrisk clone of ST410 that produces carbapenemase (KPC). blaKPCencoding and isolates were evaluated, and complete sequencing and comparative analysis of blaKPC-encoding plasmids from and , antimicrobial susceptibility tests, polymerase chain reaction, multilocus sequence typing, and conjugal transfer of plasmids were performed.

Prevalence and correlates of prior experimentation with e-cigarettes over conventional cigarettes among adolescents: Findings from the 2015 Korea Youth Risk Behaviour Web-based Survey.

Introduction: As concern is increasing about electronic cigarette use among never-smoking youth, we aimed to examine the prevalence and correlates of prior experimentation of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) over conventional cigarettes (c-cigs).

Methods: We used the 10th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey in 2015, including 67960 participants as study subjects. This survey was designed as stratified multistage clustered samples from middle schools and high schools.

Randomized, Open-Label, Phase IV, Korean Study of Kidney Transplant Patients Converting From Cyclosporine to Prolonged-Release Tacrolimus Plus Standard- or Reduced-Dose Corticosteroids.

Background: This 24-week, multicenter, randomized, exploratory, comparative, open-label, phase-IV study assessed the safety and efficacy of prolonged-release tacrolimus (PR-T) with reduced-dose versus standard-dose corticosteroids in stable kidney transplant recipients in Korea after converting from cyclosporine-based therapy.

Methods: At baseline, patients were converted from cyclosporine-based to PR-T-based immunosuppression and randomized (1:1) to receive either corticosteroids maintained at prestudy dose (standard-dose group) or tapered from week 4 to 50% of the prestudy dose by week 12 (reduced-dose group). Patients were seen at baseline and weeks 1, 4, 12, and 24.

Predictive value of neurophysiologic monitoring during neurovascular intervention for postoperative new neurologic deficits.

Purpose: Forms of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM), including somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) and motor evoked potentials (MEPs), have been widely used in the field of neurosurgery. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of IONM in identifying intraoperative events and predicting postoperative neurologic deficits in neurovascular intervention.

Methods: From January 2013 to December 2016, we retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent neurovascular intervention under general anesthesia with the use of IONM.

Background: Modifications of erythrocyte membrane fatty acid (FA) contents may affect cellular function or transmembrane receptors. One cross-sectional study has shown that kidney transplant (KTP) recipients have lower erythrocyte membrane oleic acid content than dialysis patients do. Therefore, we prospectively tested whether erythrocyte membrane contents of FA including oleic acid change after KTP.

Risk Factors of On-Pump Conversion during Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft.

Background: Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG) procedures can avoid the complications of an on-pump bypass. However, some cases unexpectedly require conversion to cardiopulmonary bypass during OPCABG. The risk factors associated with a sudden need for cardiopulmonary bypass were analyzed.

[A Case of Intramural Hematoma of the Esophagus Mimicking Acute Coronary Syndrome].

Intramural hematoma of the esophagus is a rare condition that can be spontaneous or secondary to trauma, toxic ingestion, or intervention. If it is the spontaneous type, it usually presents initially with epigastric pain, hematemesis or dysphagia. We present a case of intramural hematoma of the esophagus mimicking acute coronary syndrome.

Physical Functioning, Physical Activity, Exercise Self-Efficacy, and Quality of Life Among Individuals With Chronic Heart Failure in Korea: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study.

Background: Both the beneficial relationship between exercise and quality of life and the important role played by exercise self-efficacy in maintaining an exercise regimen among individuals with chronic heart failure are well known. However, most nursing interventions for Korean patients with chronic heart failure focus only on providing education related to risk factors and symptoms. Little information is available regarding the influence of physical functions, physical activity, and exercise self-efficacy on quality of life.
