Although the involvement of plastic surgery has been deemed important in the treatment of sarcoma patients to avoid oncological compromises and ameliorate patient outcomes, it is not ubiquitously available. The accessibility of defect reconstruction and its therapeutic impact on sarcoma care is the subject of this analysis. Cross-sectional data from 1309 sarcoma patients were collected electronically at 39 German study centers from 2017 to 2019.

Purpose: Intraoperative 3D imaging has become a valued tool in assessing the quality of reduction and implant placement in orthopedic trauma surgery. In our institution, 3D imaging is used routinely since 2001. To evaluate the intraoperative findings and consequences of this technique, intraoperative revision rates in cases with 3D imaging were analyzed.

Background: Large, full-thickness infrainguinal wounds following revision revascularization procedures of the lower extremity are a challenging complication for reconstructive surgery. Frequently, these patients present with various comorbidities and after several previous reconstructive attempts. Therefore no straightforward soft tissue reconstruction is likely.

Inducing axial vascularisation of tissue engineering constructs is a well-established method to support tissue growth in large 3-dimensional tissues. Progenitor cell chemotaxis towards axially vascularized tissues has not been well characterized. In a prospective randomized controlled study including 32 male syngeneic Lewis rats we investigated the capability of the axially vascularized constructs to attract systemically injected bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs).

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) can result in a devastating condition. For a small number of patients, there is a non-response to any existing multimodal therapies and they ultimately request amputation. Such a drastic and final decision is not easy to take for both the patient and the surgeon and requires careful and interdisciplinary assessments and considerations.

3D-navigated pedicle screw placement is increasingly performed as the accuracy has been shown to be considerably higher compared to fluoroscopy-guidance. While different imaging and navigation devices can be used, there are few studies comparing these under similar conditions. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of two combinations most used in the literature for spinal navigation and a recently approved combination of imaging device and navigation system.

Background: Primary anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap donor-site closure is crucial to achieve patient satisfaction, avoid burdensome secondary surgeries, and avert poor outcomes. Only vague maximum flap width recommendations have been suggested, which fall short of acknowledging individual patient habitus and thigh morphology. Therefore, we aimed at identifying a user-friendly preoperative calculation of maximum flap width for primary closure.

Background: The collagenase of the bacterium Clostridium histolyticum (CCH) is already an established treatment for fibroproliferative diseases like M. Dupuytren and M. Peyronie Although results are comparable to surgical intervention, skin laceration is a severe and relevant side effect.

Rhinoplasty is considered a very challenging surgery since minimal changes of this central area of the face may significantly impact a person's appearance and self-awareness. This is even more challenging in thick-skinned patients because results are less predictable, and changes to the osseocartilaginous framework (OCF) may not be sufficiently visible due to the blanket effect of the thick skin. Furthermore, pre-existing skin conditions may exacerbate following surgery.

Background: The German health care system has recently become an attractive destination for international medical graduates, particularly from developing countries such as Syria. However, there are no studies about the factors that influence the successful entry into the German healthcare system at trainee level. METHOD : An anonymous cross-sectional survey was distributed electronically to Syrian medical graduates who successfully entered residency training in Germany.

We retrospectively compared 64 scaphoid reconstructions in cases that had not undergone previous surgery with 31 cases in which previous surgery had been performed. The characteristics of the groups were similar except that there were more smokers in the group without previous surgery and a more frequent use of vascularized bone grafts in the group with previous surgery. At final follow-up, 66 and 65 months, respectively, after reconstruction, union incidence was 89% and 90%.

Purpose: To characterize the qualitative anatomy of posterior scapula structures encountered with the Judet approach and to perform a quantitative evaluation of these structures' anatomic locations, including their relationships to osseus landmarks to identify safe zones.
Methods: Twelve fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders (mean age, 55.2 years; range 41-64 years; 5 left, 7 right) were dissected.

The objective of this study was to examine the impact of closed incision negative pressure therapy (CINPT) on donor site complications and patient perceptions in transverse musculocutaneous gracilis (TMG) flap breast reconstruction. Our institution conducted a retrospective cohort study, including all patients with TMG flap breast reconstruction from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2021. Patients were grouped according to conventional wound management or CINPT.

Background: As the cost of healthcare rises, it is imperative to assess value delivered to patients and impact on the economic viability of institutions. We aimed to characterize plastic surgery operative time management and identified areas for efficiency improvement.
Methods: Procedures from a US academic plastic surgery division from September 2017 to August 2018 were reviewed.

Background: The aging population has presented surgeons with new challenges as they increasingly must operate on greater numbers of frail patients. The modified frailty index 5 (mFI-5) is a concise comorbidity-based scale that has been shown to accurately predict adverse surgical outcomes. In this study, we sought to evaluate the ability of the mFI-5 to predict the risk of postoperative outcomes in breast reconstruction patients.

To assess the result in orthopedic trauma surgery, usually three-dimensional volume data of the treated region is acquired. With mobile C-arm systems, these acquisitions can be performed intraoperatively, reducing the number of required revision surgeries. However, the acquired volumes are typically not aligned to the anatomical regions.

Introduction: Hypercoagulability is associated with an increased risk of microvascular complications and free flap failures. The authors present their experience and approach to diagnosing and treating patients with heterozygotic factor V Leiden (hFVL) thrombophilia undergoing free flap reconstruction.
Methods: Between November 2009 and June 2018, 23 free flap surgeries were performed in 15 hypercoagulable patients with hFVL.

Methods: In a prospective observational controlled study, we evaluated hyposmia via the Sniffin' Stick Test (SnS), hypogeusia via a taste strip test, and dysphonia and dysphagia via validated questionnaires acutely and one-year after burn, respectively.

Primary dermal sarcomas (PDS) belong to a highly clinically, genetically and pathologically heterogeneous group of rare malignant mesenchymal tumours primarily involving the dermis or the subcutaneous tissue. The tumours are classified according to the mesenchymal tissue from which they originate: dermal connective tissue, smooth muscle or vessels. Clinically, PDS may mimic benign soft tissue lesions such as dermatofibromas, hypertrophic scarring, etc.

Aim: Demand for nipple- and skin- sparing mastectomy (NSM/SSM) with immediate breast reconstruction (BR) has increased at the same time as indications for post-mastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) have broadened. The aim of the Oncoplastic Breast Consortium initiative was to address relevant questions arising with this clinically challenging scenario.
Methods: A large global panel of oncologic, oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgeons, patient advocates and radiation oncologists developed recommendations for clinical practice in an iterative process based on the principles of Delphi methodology.

Background: As rates of breast cancer and type II diabetes increase, so does the number of women with diabetes undergoing breast reconstruction (BR). Patients with diabetes are at increased risk of postoperative complications. This meta-analysis seeks to evaluate the post-operative outcomes of women with diabetes who underwent BR following mastectomy.
