Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children globally. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) pneumonia diagnosis relies on accurate assessment of respiratory rate, which can be unreliable when completed by nurses with less-advanced training. To inform more accurate measurements, we investigate the repeatability of the RRate app used by nurses in Ugandan district hospitals.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted that hand hygiene (HH) is key in preventing health care-associated infections. Patients and families are understudied targets for infection prevention and control practices. Previous campaigns to change HH behavior have been effective, but often face systemic challenges with implementation.

Sepsis arises when the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. Among children hospitalized with suspected sepsis in low-income country settings, mortality rates following discharge are high, similar to mortality rates in hospital. The Smart Discharges Program uses a mobile health (mHealth) platform to identify children at high risk of post-discharge mortality to receive enhanced post-discharge care.

Unwanted, intrusive thoughts (UITs) of infant-related harm are a common postpartum phenomenon and can be classified into thoughts of accidental harm (TAHs) and thoughts of intentional harm (TIHs). Our study's objective was to complete a comprehensive, comparative analysis of TAHs and TIHs by commenting on their prevalence, course, characteristics (time, distress, and impairment) and most intense period. A total of 763 English-speaking pregnant women across British Columbia were recruited to participate in a prospective cohort study.

Objectives: We evaluated the extent of virus heterogeneity in PeV infected infants in the UK, Canada and Australia.
Methods: Samples were collected from PeV infected infants during 2013-16. Next generation sequencing was used to obtain sequencing data and construct phylogenetic trees based on analysis of the VP1 region.

Risk of cardiovascular disease mortality rises in women after menopause. While increased cardiovascular risk is largely attributed to postmenopausal declines in estrogens, the molecular changes in the heart that contribute to risk are poorly understood. Disruptions in intracellular calcium handling develop in ovariectomized mice and have been implicated in cardiac dysfunction.

The aim of this "Technical Note" is to inform the pediatric critical care data research community about the "2024 Pediatric Sepsis Data Challenge." This competition aims to facilitate the development of open-source algorithms to predict in-hospital mortality in Ugandan children with sepsis. The challenge is to first develop an algorithm using a synthetic training dataset, which will then be scored according to standard diagnostic testing criteria, and then be evaluated against a nonsynthetic test dataset.

Endometriosis is a gynecological disorder associated with local inflammation and neuroproliferation. Increased nerve bundle density has been attributed to increased expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Immunohistochemical analysis was carried out on 12 patients presenting with all three anatomic subtypes of endometriosis (deep, superficial peritoneal, endometrioma) at surgery, with at least two surgically excised subtypes available for analysis.

Purpose: Postpartum depression (PPD) and anxiety (PPA) affect nearly one-quarter (23%) of women in Canada. eHealth is a promising solution for increasing access to postpartum mental healthcare. However, a user-centered approach is not routinely taken in the development of web-enabled resources, leaving postpartum women out of critical decision-making processes.

Endometriosis, a chronic condition characterized by the growth of endometrial-like tissue outside of the uterus, poses substantial challenges in terms of diagnosis and treatment. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool in the field of medicine, offering opportunities to address the complexities of endometriosis. This review explores the current landscape of endometriosis diagnosis and treatment, highlighting the potential of AI to alleviate some of the associated burdens and underscoring common pitfalls and challenges when employing AI algorithms in this context.

Despite success in managing HIV during pregnancy, challenges remain around sustained adherence with antiretroviral therapy (ART), and the suboptimal viral load (VL) suppression during the postpartum period. The objective of this study was to compare VL levels at delivery and during the postpartum period and assess factors associated with lack of viral suppression during the postpartum period in Canada. We combined data from two Canadian prospective cohorts, which included 286 HIV-positive women (352 pregnancies) who delivered between 2012 and 2020.

In this cross-sectional study performed in Canada, we evaluated the frustration levels of prepartum and postpartum mother and father couple-pairs. Our goal was to determine if there were differences in frustration levels between mothers and fathers while listening to prolonged infant crying, and further, how frustration levels might differ between prepartum and postpartum samples. Using two discrete groups, prepartum (Sample 1; N = 48) and postpartum (Sample 2; N = 44) mother and father couple-pairs completed 600 s of listening to audio-recorded infant cry sounds.

Postpartum support for new parents can normalize experiences, increase confidence, and lead to positive health outcomes. While in-person gatherings may be the preferred choice, not all parents can or want to join parenting groups in person. Online asynchronous chat spaces for parents have increased over the past 10 years, especially during the COVID pandemic, when "online" became the norm.

Background: Under-five mortality remains concentrated in resource-poor countries. Post-discharge mortality is becoming increasingly recognized as a significant contributor to overall child mortality. With a substantial recent expansion of research and novel data synthesis methods, this study aims to update the current evidence base by providing a more nuanced understanding of the burden and associated risk factors of pediatric post-discharge mortality after acute illness.

Background: The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine recommends defining fetal growth restriction as an estimated fetal weight or abdominal circumference <10th percentile of a population-based reference. However, because multiple references are available, an understanding of their ability to identify infants at increased risk due to fetal growth restriction is critical. Previous studies have focused on the ability of different population references to identify short-term outcomes, but fetal growth restriction also has longer-term consequences for child development.

A pilot quality improvement project was conducted to examine the effect of playing an applause sound effect at a busy hospital concourse for three consecutive days whenever hand hygiene behavior was observed. The immediate effect was documented. The project demonstrated observable interest among people passing by, and hand hygiene events triggered by the sound effect represented 10.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has perturbed the seasonality of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections. However, we lack data on how this impacted the severity of paediatric RSV cases. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical severity of RSV cases before, during and after pandemic measures in British Columbia (BC), Canada.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) guidelines recognize the importance of discharge planning to ensure continuation of care at home and appropriate follow-up. However, insufficient attention has been paid to post discharge planning in many hospitals contributing to poor implementation. To understand the reasons for suboptimal discharge, we evaluated the pediatric discharge process from hospital admission through the transition to care within the community in Ugandan hospitals.

Introduction: Postpartum depression and anxiety (PPDA) is experienced by up to 20% of families in the first year. The condition impacts not only parents but also their developing child. While mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have shown to be beneficial for this population, many parents do not have access to treatment or find it challenging to commit or complete the treatment.
