Background: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) exhibit considerable interindividual variability in medication response, highlighting the need for precision medicine approaches to optimize and tailor treatment. Pharmacogenetics (PGx) offers the ability to individualize dosing by examining genetic factors underlying the metabolism of medications such as thiopurines. Pharmacogenetic testing can identify individuals who may be at risk for thiopurine dose-dependent adverse reactions including myelosuppression.

Decidual cast: a rare cause of genital tract obstruction.

Decidual cast is a little-known entity characterized by sloughing of the endometrium in several large pieces or in one cylindrical or membranous piece retaining the shape of the uterine cavity. Accounts of the diagnosis are sporadic and have not previously appeared in the pediatric imaging literature. We describe a case of a post-menarchal adolescent girl presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding, severe dysmenorrhea, and imaging features of genital tract obstruction, the cause of which was found to be a large decidual cast during examination under anesthesia.

Sonographic features of sternal pseudotumour in children.

Introduction: Sternal pseudotumour is an important but rare entity thought to be an inflammatory, non-neoplastic lesion that can mimic tumours. The purpose of this paper was to illustrate the imaging features of this lesion to avoid unnecessary investigations.

Methods: The clinical notes and imaging features of four patients with a diagnosis of sternal pseudotumour were reviewed over a period from February 2016 to July 2019.

Access to and Health Outcomes of Pediatric Solid Organ Transplantation for Indigenous Children in 4 Settler-colonial Countries: A Scoping Review.

Solid organ transplantation (SOT) is considered the optimal treatment for children with end-stage organ failure; however, increased efforts are needed to understand the gap surrounding equitable access to and health outcomes of SOT for Indigenous children. This scoping review summarizes the literature on the characteristics of access to and health outcomes of pediatric SOT among Indigenous children in the settler-colonial states of Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, and the United States. A search was performed on MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL for studies matching preestablished eligibility criteria from inception to November 2021.

Adrenal insufficiency in pediatric kidney transplantation recipients.

Background: Immunosuppression of pediatric kidney transplant (PKT) recipients often includes corticosteroids. Prolonged corticosteroid exposure has been associated with secondary adrenal insufficiency (AI); however, little is known about its impact on PKT recipients.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort review of PKT recipients to evaluate AI prevalence, risk factors, and adverse effects.

Immune monitoring in pediatric kidney transplant.

Background: Long-term outcomes in pediatric kidney transplantation remain suboptimal, largely related to chronic rejection. Creatinine is a late marker of renal injury, and more sensitive, early markers of allograft injury are an active area of current research.

Methods: This is an educational review summarizing existing strategies for monitoring for rejection in kidney transplant recipients.

Cortical Hand Knob Paradoxical Thromboembolic Stroke in an Adolescent with Secundum Atrial Septal Defect and Paget-Schroetter Syndrome.

Venous thoracic outlet syndrome (vTOS) is an increasingly recognized diagnosis in young patients in which the subclavian vein is compressed within the costoclavicular space. With repetitive compression, thrombosis can develop and has been referred to as "effort thrombosis" or the Paget-Schroetter syndrome. Here, we present a 16-year-old boy with vTOS who presented with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in the hand knob region of precentral gyrus due to paradoxical embolus in the setting of atrial septal defect.

Development of human visual cortical function: A scoping review of task- and naturalistic-fMRI studies through the interactive specialization and maturational frameworks.

Overarching theories such as the interactive specialization and maturational frameworks have been proposed to describe human functional brain development. However, these frameworks have not yet been systematically examined across the fMRI literature. Visual processing is one of the most well-studied fields in neuroimaging, and research in this area has recently expanded to include naturalistic paradigms that facilitate study in younger age ranges, allowing for an in-depth critical appraisal of these frameworks across childhood.

The role for routine whole genome and transcriptome analysis (WGTA) for poor prognosis pediatric cancers remains undetermined. Who is in Your Waiting Room? Social Determinants of Health and Adverse Childhood Experiences in Pediatric Surgery Clinics.

Background: Social determinants of health (SDoH) influence overall health, although little is known about the SDoH for pediatric patients requiring surgical services. This study aims to describe SDoH for pediatric surgical patients attending out-patient, community, and outreach clinics, as well as demonstrate the feasibility of identifying and addressing SDoH and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) when appropriate.

Methods: A cross-sectional study using surveys evaluating SDoH that were distributed to families attending pediatric surgical clinics over a two-year period.

Here, we describe the AA composition of interstitial fluids in keratinocyte-derived skin cancers (KDSCs) and study the effect of AA on T cells using models of primary human cells and tissues.

Safety and efficacy of three-dimensional versus two-dimensional endoscopy in otolaryngology surgery and training: A systematic review.

Objective: Three-dimensional (3D) endoscopy has been developed to provide depth perception to allow for improved visualisation during otolaryngology surgery. We conducted a systematic review to determine the surgical safety and efficacy of 3D endoscopy in comparison to two-dimensional (2D) endoscopy in performing otolaryngology procedures, and the role of 3D endoscopy as a training tool for novice otolaryngology surgeons.

Methods: Primary studies were identified through MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science databases, which were searched for articles published through June 2022 that compared the outcomes of 2D and 3D endoscopy in otolaryngology surgical procedures or otolaryngology-relevant simulations.

Dietary Lysine Requirements of Older Adults Stratified by Age and Sex.

Background: Current recommendation for lysine in older adults, 30 mg/kg/d, is based on young adult data. Evidence suggests that amino acid requirements may differ between young and old adults with both sex and age having an effect in the elderly.

Early-treatment cerebral blood flow change as a predictive biomarker of antidepressant treatment response: evidence from the EMBARC clinical trial.

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent and disabling illnesses worldwide. Treatment of MDD typically relies on trial-and-error to find an effective approach. Identifying early response-related biomarkers that predict response to antidepressants would help clinicians to decide, as early as possible, whether a particular treatment might be suitable for a given patient.
