Three-Component Decomposition Based on Stokes Vector for Compact Polarimetric SAR.

In this paper, a three-component decomposition algorithm is proposed for processing compact polarimetric SAR images. By using the correspondence between the covariance matrix and the Stokes vector, three-component scattering models for CTLR and DCP modes are established. The explicit expression of decomposition results is then derived by setting the contribution of volume scattering as a free parameter.

Since the first proof of concept in the early 70s, a number of technologies has been proposed to perform proton CT (pCT), as a means of mapping tissue stopping power for accurate treatment planning in proton therapy. Previous prototypes of energy-range detectors for pCT have been mainly based on the use of scintillator-based calorimeters, to measure proton residual energy after passing through the patient. 2' 5'-Oligoadenylate synthetases (OAS) are interferon-stimulated proteins that act in the innate immune response to viral infection. Upon binding viral double-stranded RNA, OAS enzymes produce 2'-5'-linked oligoadenylates that stimulate RNase L and ultimately slow viral propagation. Truncations/mutations in the smallest human OAS isoform, OAS1, results in susceptibility to West Nile virus (WNV).

Multiple outcomes multivariate meta-analysis (MOMA) is gaining in popularity as a tool for jointly synthesizing evidence coming from studies that report effect estimates for multiple correlated outcomes. Models for MOMA are available for the case of the pairwise meta-analysis of two treatments for multiple outcomes. Network meta-analysis (NMA) can be used for handling studies that compare more than two treatments; however, there is currently little guidance on how to perform an MOMA for the case of a network of interventions with multiple outcomes.

Control of relative timing is critical in ensemble music performance. We hypothesize that players respond to and correct asynchronies in tone onsets that arise from fluctuations in their individual tempos. We propose a first-order linear phase correction model and demonstrate that optimal performance that minimizes asynchrony variance predicts a specific value for the correction gain.

Adenovirus virus-associated RNA (VAI) provides protection against the host antiviral response in part by inhibiting the interferon-induced double stranded RNA-activated protein kinase (PKR). VAI consists of three base-paired regions; the apical stem responsible for the interaction with double-stranded RNA binding motifs (dsRBMs) of PKR, the central stem required for inhibition, and the terminal stem. The solution conformation of VAI and VAI lacking the terminal stem were determined using SAXS that suggested extended conformations that are in agreement with their secondary structures.

Getting to the heart of it: Co-crystallization of an RNA three-way junction with a cylindrical di-iron(II)-based anti-cancer drug (green) results in π-stacking interactions between the cylinder and the central base pairs of the RNA structure. The shape, size, and cationic nature of the cylinder were found to be responsible for this perfect fit. Native gel electrophoresis studies confirmed stabilization of the RNA three-way junction by the iron(II) cylinder.

The interaction of salphen-type NiII, CuII and ZnII complexes with native DNA was investigated by exploiting linear dichroism experiments. The NiII complex behaves as a typical intercalator, binding strongly and stiffening and unwinding the DNA. The strength of the DNA interaction is slightly weaker for the copper complex and much weaker for the zinc complex.

Background: When conducting aphid stylectomy, measuring accurate rates of phloem exudation is difficult because the volumes collected are in the nanolitre (nl) range. In a new method, exudate volume was calculated from optical measurement of droplet diameter as it forms on the tip of a severed aphid stylet. Evaporation was shown to decrease the accuracy of the measurement but was countered with the addition of water-saturated mineral oil.

In this article, it is argued that grandparents' obligations originate from parental obligations (i.e from the relationship they have with their children, the parents of their grandchildren) and not from the role of grandparent per se, and any entitlements flow from the extent to which these obligations are met. DFT study of the structures and energetics of 98-atom AuPd clusters.

The energetics, structures and segregation of 98-atom AuPd nanoclusters are investigated using a genetic algorithm global optimization technique with the Gupta empirical potential (comparing three different potential parameterisations) followed by local minimizations using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. A shell optimization program algorithm is employed in order to study the energetics of the highly symmetric Leary Tetrahedron (LT) structure and optimization of the chemical ordering of a number of structural motifs is carried out using the Basin Hopping Monte Carlo approach. Although one of the empirical potentials is found to favour the LT structure, it is shown that Marks Decahedral and mixed FCC-HCP motifs are lowest in energy at the DFT level.

MetaboLab--advanced NMR data processing and analysis for metabolomics.

Background: Despite wide-spread use of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) in metabolomics for the analysis of biological samples there is a lack of graphically driven, publicly available software to process large one and two-dimensional NMR data sets for statistical analysis.

Results: Here we present MetaboLab, a MATLAB based software package that facilitates NMR data processing by providing automated algorithms for processing series of spectra in a reproducible fashion. A graphical user interface provides easy access to all steps of data processing via a script builder to generate MATLAB scripts, providing an option to alter code manually.

Parkinson's disease (PD) has been associated with the development of impulse control disorders (ICDs), possibly due to overstimulation of the mesolimbic system by dopaminergic medication. Preliminary reports have suggested that deep brain stimulation (DBS), a neurosurgical procedure offered to patients with treatment-resistant PD, affects ICD in a twofold way. Firstly, DBS allows a decrease in dopaminergic medication and hence causes an improvement in ICDs.

The effect of interfacial microstructure on the lipid oxidation stability of oil-in-water emulsions.

A novel approach to reduce lipid oxidation in oil-in-water emulsions has been taken and involves the manipulation of the emulsions' interfacial microstructure. Oil-in-water emulsions stabilised by sodium caseinate (CAS), Tween 20 and silica particles were prepared and their lipid oxidation stability was assessed over a week. Lipid oxidation was monitored by measuring the concentration of primary lipid oxidation product, using the peroxide value method and secondary lipid oxidation products formation were evaluated with the p-anisidine technique.
