Microplastics are small plastic pieces ranging in size from 1μ to <5 mm in diameter, are water-soluble, and can be either primary as they are initially created in small sizes or secondary as they develop due to plastic degradation. Approximately 360 million tons of plastic are produced globally every year, with only 7% recycled, leaving the majority of waste to accumulate in the environment and pose a serious threat in the form of microplastics. All ecosystems, particularly freshwater ecosystems, experience microplastic accumulation and are also prone to degrading processes.

This study investigates the efficacy of newly synthesized inhibitor with a dual function of corrosion inhibition and biocide for control of microbial influenced corrosion (MIC) in carbon steel API 5LX in the cooling tower water (CTW) environment. Four types of N-substituted tetrabromophthalic inhibitor (N-TBI) were synthesized, and the structural characterization was performed via proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Still, it remains a debate after four decades of research on surviving cells, several bacterial species were naturally inducted and found to exist in a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state, an adaptive strategy executed by most bacterial species under different stressful conditions. VBNC state are generally attributed when the cells lose its culturability on standard culture media, diminish in conventional detection methods, but retaining its viability, virulence and antibiotic resistance over a period of years and may poses a risk to marine animals as well as public health and food safety.
