Neutron diffraction study of the (BiFeO3)1-x(PbTiO3)x solid solution: nanostructured multiferroic system.

Neutron diffraction studies performed on the solid solution of (BiFeO(3))(1-x)(PbTiO(3))(x) reveal a mixture of two nanoscale phases with different crystal structures: a rhombohedral BiFeO(3)-based phase and a tetragonal PbTiO3-based phase. The ratio of Fe(3)+ and Ti(4)+ ions in the two phases is practically constant; only the proportion of the phases changes. The magnetic moments in the BiFeO(3)-based phase, in contrast to BiFeO(3), deviate from the basal plane.

The complete decipherment of the functions and interactions of the elements of the riboflavin biosynthesis operon (rib operon) of Bacillus subtilis are necessary for the development of superproducers of this important vitamin. The function of its terminal ribT gene has not been established to date. In this work, a search for homologs of the hypothetical amino acid sequence of the gene product through databases, as well as an analysis of the homolgs, was performed; the distribution of secondary structure elements was theoretically predicted; and the tertiary structure of the RibT protein was proposed.

Enzymes capable of modifying the sulfated polymeric molecule of fucoidan are mainly produced by different groups of marine organisms: invertebrates, bacteria, and also some fungi. We have discovered and identified a new strain of filamentous fungus Fusarium proliferatum LE1 (deposition number in Russian Collection of Agricultural Microorganisms is RCAM02409), which is a potential producer of fucoidan-degrading enzymes. The strain LE1 (RCAM02409) was identified on the basis of morphological characteristics and analysis of ITS sequences of ribosomal DNA.

The gene product 60 (gp60) of bacteriophage T4 is synthesized as a single polypeptide chain from a discontinuous reading frame as a result of bypassing of a non-coding mRNA region of 50 nucleotides by the ribosome. To identify the minimum set of signals required for bypassing, we recapitulated efficient translational bypassing in an in vitro reconstituted translation system from Escherichia coli. We find that the signals, which promote efficient and accurate bypassing, are specified by the gene 60 mRNA sequence.

To understand structure-function relationships in the N-terminal region of GH11 xylanases, the 17 N-terminal amino acids of the GH11 xylanase from Neocallimastix patriciarum (Np-Xyn) have been grafted onto the N-terminal extremity of the untypically short GH11 xylanase from Thermobacillus xylanilyticus (Tx-Xyn), creating a hybrid enzyme denoted NTfus. The hybrid xylanase displayed properties (pH and temperature optima) similar to those of the parental enzyme, although thermostability was lowered, with the Tm value, being reduced by 5°C. Kinetic assays using oNP-Xylo-oligosaccharides (DP2 and 3) indicated that the N-extension did not procure more extensive substrate binding, even when further mutagenesis was performed to promote this.

Measurement of α-synuclein level in the peripheral blood was proposed as a diagnostic test for Parkinson's disease. However, the results of these studies remain contradictory, probably because the examined samples included patients with different etiology of Parkinson's disease. The intracellular levels of superoxide O(2)(-)and nitric oxide NO were directly measured under intravital conditions in cultured human endotheliocytes ECV 304 and carcinoma cells HeLa G-63. Comparative analysis of changes in the intracellular levels of superoxide and NO induced by ascorbic acid revealed a negative correlation between NO and O(2)(-)levels, whose strength depended on concentration of the acid. In pharmacological concentrations, ascorbic acid induced apoptotic death of carcinoma cells, but did not trigger apoptosis of endotheliocytes.

Females of spontaneously hypertensive (SHR strain) and normotensive rats (WKY strain and Wistar) received drinking water with normal (80 mg/liter) or reduced concentration of Ca(2+)(8 mg/liter). Activity of calcium-dependent calpain protease in neurons did not differ in 18-day-old rat pups born and suckled by these animals. Our results are consistent with published data on normal metabolism of SHR rats up to the age of 30 days.

According to one prominent model, each protomer in the activated nucleoprotein filament of homologous recombinase RecA possesses two DNA-binding sites. The primary site binds (1) single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) to form presynaptic complex and (2) the newly formed double-stranded (ds) DNA whereas the secondary site binds (1) dsDNA of a partner to initiate strand exchange and (2) the displaced ssDNA following the strand exchange. RecA protein from Pseudomonas aeruginosa (RecAPa) promotes in Escherichia coli hyper-recombination in an SOS-independent manner.

Voltage-gated ion channels in biological membranes can be modeled as two-state stochastic systems with inter-state transition probabilities that depend on external stimulus. We study analytically the passage of a signal through such a system in the presence of external noise in the case when the above dependence is arbitrary, and illustrate our approach using the two models of ion channels known in the literature. The explicit expressions for the spectral density of the output signal and noise, the signal-to-noise ratio, and the coherence function are obtained for rectangular periodic signal and dichotomous noise in a wide range of parameters.

Conditions for the reversible binding of isolated anticodon arm of yeast tRNA(Phe) (15-nucleotide, corresponding to nucleotides N28-N42) to the P site of Escherichia coli 30S and 70S ribosomes have been determined. The affinity constant for the anticodon arm binding to 70S ribosomes is shown to be only 30-fold weaker than that for the binding of total tRNA(Phe). The affinities of yeast tRNA(Phe) and the anticodon arm for 30S subunits and of the anticodon arm for the total 70S ribosomes are shown to be equal.

AcPhe2-tRNA(Phe) synthesized in 70S ribosomes after consecutive binding of AcPhe-tRNA(Phe) at the P sites and EF-Tu-directed binding of Phe-tRNA(Phe) at the A sites is able to react quantitatively with puromycin in the absence of EF-G. A detailed study of the kinetics of the puromycin reaction, its comparison with that of spontaneous translocation, the use of antibiotic viomycin as an effective inhibitor of spontaneous translocation revealed that, besides spontaneous translocation, this peptidyl-tRNA could react with puromycin being located at the A site. This leads to the conclusion that the transpeptidation reaction per se triggers conformational changes in the ribosomal complex bringing the 3'-end of a newly synthesized peptidyl-tRNA nearer to the peptidyl-site of the peptidyltransferase center.
