The fascination with superheavy elements (SHE) spans the nuclear physics, astrophysics, and theoretical chemistry communities. Extreme relativistic effects govern these elements' chemistry and challenge the traditional notion of the periodic law. The experimental quest for SHE critically depends on theoretical predictions of these elements' properties, especially chemical homology, which allows for successful prototypical experiments with more readily available lighter homologues of SHE.

One of the human proteome puzzles is an imbalance between the theoretically calculated and experimentally measured amounts of proteoforms. Considering the possibility of combinations of different post-translational modifications (PTMs), the quantity of possible proteoforms is huge. An estimation gives more than a million different proteoforms in each cell type.

Heterogeneous bi-magnetic nanostructured systems have had a sustained interest during the last decades owing to their unique magnetic properties and the wide range of derived potential applications. However, elucidating the details of their magnetic properties can be rather complex. Here, a comprehensive study of Fe O /Mn O core/shell nanoparticles using polarized neutron powder diffraction, which allows disentangling the magnetic contributions of each of the components, is presented.

The protein encoded by the vaccinia virus gene has base excision repair uracil-DNA -glycosylase (vvUNG) activity and also acts as a processivity factor in the viral replication complex. The use of a protein unlike PolN/PCNA sliding clamps is a unique feature of orthopoxviral replication, providing an attractive target for drug design. However, the intrinsic processivity of vvUNG has never been estimated, leaving open the question whether it is sufficient to impart processivity to the viral polymerase.

Adsorption energies, , of the 7th row superheavy elements (SHEs) Lv through Og, as well as of the homologous species of the 6th row elements Po through Rn on a gold surface are predicted on the basis of relativistic periodic density functional theory calculations SCM BAND software. Since some of the elements can also form compounds such as hydrides and oxyhydrides under experimental conditions, the values of the MH (M = Bi/Mc, Po/Lv, At/Ts and Rn/Og) and MOH (M = At/Ts and Rn/Og) molecules on a gold surface were also calculated. The aim of this study is to support "one-atom-at-a-time" gas-phase chromatography experiments on the reactivity/volatility of SHEs.

Powder diamonds with integrated europium atoms were synthesized at high pressure (7.7 GPa) and temperature (1800 °C) from a mixture of pentaerythritol with pyrolyzate of diphthalocyanine (CHNEu) being a special precursor. In diamonds prepared by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, we have found a concentration of Eu atoms of 51 ± 5 ppm that is by two orders of magnitude greater than that in natural and synthetic diamonds.

The additional atomic occupancy in the octahedral and the tetrahedral voids of the face-centered cubic lattice (fcc) of fullerene Cwas detected by neutron and x-ray powder diffraction. The observed occupancy exactly tracks the rearrangement of the orientation order with temperature decreases and results from the large atomic vibrations of the carbon atoms constituting the fullerene molecules. This motion assumes a small but finite probability to find the carbon atoms in the fcc interstitial voids, which is modeled by the detected 'phantom' occupancies.

A laboratory study of the cytokine profile and the content of the intercellular adhesion molecules was performed in 38 patients with initial signs of aortic hemilunus calcification. It has been determined that the content of IL-6 and IL-8 had significantly higher values compared with the control group, which indicates the direct role of nonspecific chronic inflammation in the development of calcifying aortic valve damage. A significantly lower content of sE-selectin was also identified, which may indicate the absence of activation of adhesion molecules at the initial stage of aortic valve calcification.

The explicit breaking of the axial symmetry by quantum fluctuations gives rise to the so-called axial anomaly. This phenomenon is solely responsible for the decay of the neutral pion π into two photons (γγ), leading to its unusually short lifetime. We precisely measured the decay width Γ of the [Formula: see text] process.

The human proteome is composed of a diverse and heterogeneous range of gene products/proteoforms/protein species. Because of the growing amount of information about proteoforms generated by different methods, we need a convenient approach to make an inventory of the data. Here, we present a database of proteoforms that is based on information obtained by separation of proteoforms using 2DE followed by shotgun ESI-LC-MS/MS.

Polarized atomic beam sources have been in operation for many years to produce either nuclear polarized atomic hydrogen or deuterium beams. In recent experiments, such a source was used to polarize both isotopes independently at the same time. By recombination of the atoms, hydrogen-deuterium molecules with all possible nuclear spin combinations can be created.

This article presents a synopsis of the current data on the mechanisms of blood-brain barrier (BBB) alteration and autoimmune response in acute ischemic stroke. Most researchers confirm the relationship between the severity of immunobiochemical changes and clinical outcome of acute ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke is accompanied by aseptic inflammation, which alters the brain tissue and exposes the co-stimulatory molecules of the immune system and the neuronal antigens.

Application of dilational surface rheology, surface tensiometry, ellipsometry, Brewster angle, and transmission electron and atomic force microscopies allowed the estimation of the structure of the adsorption layer of a fullerenol with a large number of hydroxyl groups, C(OH) ( X = 30 ± 2). The surface properties of fullerenol solutions proved to be similar to the properties of dispersions of solid nanoparticles and differ from those of the solutions of conventional surfactants and amphiphilic macromolecules. Although the surface activity of fullerenol is not high, it forms adsorption layers of high surface elasticity up to 170 mN/m.

In the frame of the current work, it was shown that plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment can be applied on top of phosphoric sulfuric acid (PSA) anodized aluminum alloy AA2024. Being hard and well-adherent to the substrate, PEO layers improve both corrosion and wear resistance of the material. To facilitate PEO formation and achieve a dense layer, the systematic analysis of PEO layer formation on the preliminary PSA anodized layer was performed in this work.

To date different cell types of various mammalian species have been reprogrammed to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) using Yamanaka's cocktail of transcription factors (Oct4, Klf4, Sox2, and cMyc). It has been shown that several primary human cancer cell lines could be reprogrammed to iPSCs. We sought if immortalized mouse fibroblast cell lines could also be reprogrammed to iPSCs.

The state-of-the-art tools have been motivated by theoretical calculations, but there has never been a direct comparison between data and calculations of jet substructure observables that are accurate beyond leading-logarithm approximation. Such observables are significant not only for probing the collinear regime of QCD that is largely unexplored at a hadron collider, but also for improving the understanding of jet substructure properties that are used in many studies at the Large Hadron Collider.

In the 1970s, the strain Geotrichum candidum Link 3C was isolated from rotting rope and since then has been extensively studied as a source of cellulose and xylan-degrading enzymes. The original identification of the strain was based only on morphological characters of the fungal mycelium in culture. Recent comparison of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) fragments derived from the draft genome published in 2015 did not show its similarity to G.

The main intricacy in the human proteome is that it is tremendously complex and composed from diverse and heterogeneous gene products. These products are called protein species or proteoforms and are the smallest units of the proteome. In pursuit of the comprehensive profiling of the human proteome, significant advances in the technology of so called "Top-Down" mass spectrometry based proteomics, have been made.
