The i-EUS consensus on the management of pancreatic fluid collections - Part 1.

Dig Liver Dis

October 2024

Endoscopy Service, Department of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services, IRCCS - ISMETT, Palermo, Italy.

Pancreatic fluid collections (PFCs), including pancreatic pseudocysts (PPs) and walled-off pancreatic necrosis (WON), are common complications of pancreatitis and pancreatic surgery. Historically, the treatment of these conditions has relied on surgical and radiological approaches; however, it has later shifted toward an endoscopy-based approach. With the development of dedicated lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS), interventional Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)-guided procedures have become the standard approach for PFC drainage.

November 2024

Endoscopy Service, Department of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services, IRCCS - ISMETT, Palermo, Italy.

Pancreatic fluid collections (PFCs), including pancreatic pseudocysts (PPs) and walled-off pancreatic necrosis (WON), are common complications of pancreatitis and pancreatic surgery. Historically, the treatment of these conditions has relied on surgical and radiological approaches. The treatment of patients with PFCs has already focused toward an endoscopy-based approach, and with the development of dedicated lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS), it has almost totally shifted towards interventional Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)-guided procedures.

Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiology Department, Fondazione Toscana Gabriele Monasterio, 54100 Massa, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared the success rates and complications of using intra-cardiac echocardiography (ICE) versus transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) for guiding left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) procedures with a Watchmann FLX device across 26 Italian centers.
  • Both ICE and TEE groups had a 100% technical success rate and a high procedural success rate of around 98.5%, with similar outcomes for stroke and major bleeding after one year.
  • ICE had a longer procedural time but a shorter hospital stay compared to TEE, indicating that it may be equally effective but can streamline post-procedure recovery.

Background And Aim: Prompt administration of appropriate antibiotic therapy is crucial in improving outcomes, particularly in cases sustained by multi-drug resistant strains. Although phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) represents the gold standard to address antibiotics treatment, the long time required to obtained affordable results could negatively affect the prognosis. In contrast, rapid genotypic AST provide essential information for treatment and surveillance program.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal vestibule is reported to account for less than one percent of all head and neck malignancies. It lacks a designated WHO ICD-O topography code, and multiple systems are available for the staging of this disease, which results in unwanted variability and the subsequent poor reliability of data. The aim of this study was to evaluate the currently available staging systems for cancer of the nasal vestibule, including the recently introduced classification by Bussu et al.

Medicina (Kaunas)

February 2022

Digestive Endoscopy Unit, Department of Gastroenterology, Humanitas Clinical and Research Center, IRCCS, 20089 Rozzano, Milan, Italy.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is considered as the first option in the management of malignant biliary obstruction. In case of ERCP failure, percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) has been conventionally considered as the preferred rescue strategy. However, the use of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for biliary drainage (EUS-BD) has proved similarly high rates of technical success, when compared to PTBD.
