Background: Biliary contamination significantly correlates with major comorbidities during pancreatic head resection. Recently, a piperacillin-tazobactam prophylaxis demonstrated a lower rate of infectious complications (IC) and postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) in this population. However, bacterial contamination is rare in patients without a preoperative biliary drainage (PBD) and probably could not benefit from this antibiotic.

Background: The outcomes of minimally invasive liver surgery for posterosuperior segments (PS) are still debated. Since the results of ongoing trials focusing on the results of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) and robotic liver resection (RLR) in this setting are still awaited, the best evidence currently comes from retrospective propensity-score matched (PSM) studies. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the outcomes of RLR for difficult located lesions and to provide evidence for its use in clinical practice.

Dipartimento per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile e la Transizione Ecologica, Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale, Piazza S. Eusebio 5, 13100 Vercelli, Italy.

In the last few years, the role of science in Cultural Heritage has assumed greater significance since diagnostics have become essential for the characterization of artworks. The development of conservation strategies involves growing the study of artworks and the knowledge of the materials used against the degradation plaguing the painted surfaces. This work focuses on the investigation of the degradation processes involving paintings on canvas, in particular delamination and progressive deterioration of the painted surfaces.

Dipartimento attività integrate ricerca e innovazione (DAIRI), Azienda ospedaliero universitaria SS. Antonio e Biagio e Cesare Arrigo, Alessandria.

The initiative "Le parole della ricerca," launched in 2021, aims to enhance public understanding of health research through digital communication, using visual storytelling and local influencers. The project simplified complex research terms, linked to the DAIRI's activities, into 20 key concepts, illustrated by Gastini, and shared through social media. This campaign involved professionals explaining their work with the support of art, increasing public engagement.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 72-year-old male with a history of advanced tongue cancer was found to have a large left adrenal mass during follow-up, which raised suspicion for metastasis.
  • - After surgical removal, the mass was diagnosed as poorly differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), despite no primary liver tumor being identified during further investigations.
  • - The case highlights the importance of considering adrenal metastasis in cancer patients, as it can lead to the unexpected discovery of another underlying malignancy, such as HCC, especially in the context of liver cirrhosis.

Asbestos exposure diagnosis in pulmonary tissues.

Pathologica

August 2024

Research Training Innovation Infrastructure, Research and Innovation Department (DAIRI), Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria SS. Antonio e Biagio e Cesare Arrigo, Alessandria, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The diagnosis of asbestosis varies between clinical settings and medical/legal contexts, where the presence of asbestos bodies (ABs) is crucial for a legal classification of the disease.
  • Identifying ABs can be challenging with light microscopy; however, other factors like work history and imaging are also important in making a diagnosis.
  • Newer methods like micro-Raman spectroscopy and SEM/EDS allow for better analysis of asbestos fibres in tissue without extensive manipulation, highlighting the need for collaboration among professionals in the diagnostic process.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The COH-FIT study is a large, multi-country survey aimed at identifying factors affecting wellbeing and mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic, involving a representative sample of 121,066 adults.
  • Researchers analyzed both modifiable (like coping strategies and pre-pandemic stress) and non-modifiable factors (such as age, gender, and socioeconomic status), finding significant negative effects on wellbeing and psychopathology scores during the pandemic.
  • The study identified 15 modifiable and 9 non-modifiable risk factors, alongside 13 modifiable and 3 non-modifiable protective factors, emphasizing the importance of social support and coping strategies in mental health outcomes.

Naturally Occurring Asbestos (NOA) has drawn the attention worldwide when investigation revealed an increased incidence of malignant mesothelioma in population living near NOA sites. In Basilicata region (South Italy), population living in the villages of Castelluccio Superiore and Inferiore, Lauria, Latronico, Episcopia, San Severino Lucano, and Francavilla in Sinni may be considered at high risk of asbestos exposure because these villages are either surrounded by or built on NOA-rich ophiolitic outcrops. In this work we investigated an asbestos tremolite sample coming from the ophiolitic rocks outcropping in the quarry of Iacolinei, widely used in the past to extract aggregates for various applications.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • There is a lack of comprehensive international studies examining multidimensional mental health and wellbeing before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly identifying at-risk groups and effective coping strategies.
  • The COH-FIT survey, conducted from April 2020 to June 2022 in 30 languages, assessed changes in well-being and psychopathology among over 121,000 participants, revealing significant declines in mental health during the pandemic.
  • Key findings indicated that certain demographics, such as young adults and people in low-income countries, were particularly affected, while coping strategies like exercise, internet use, and maintaining social contacts emerged as the most effective for managing stress.

Introduction: The term theragnostic refers to the combination of a predictive imaging biomarker with a therapeutic agent. The promising application of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-based radiopharmaceuticals in the imaging and treatment of prostate cancer (PCa) patients opens the way to investigate a possible role of PSMA-based radiopharmaceuticals in cancers beyond the prostate. Therefore, the aim of this review was to evaluate the role of Lu-PSMA radioligand therapy (RLT) in malignancies other than prostate cancer by evaluating preclinical, clinical studies, and ongoing clinical trials.

Background:  Increasing evidence suggests that diabetes increases the risk of developing different types of cancer. Hyperinsulinemia, hyperglycemia and chronic inflammation, characteristic of diabetes, could represent possible mechanisms involved in cancer development in diabetic patients. At the same time, cancer increases the risk of developing new-onset diabetes, mainly caused by the use of specific anticancer therapies.

Background: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a type II transmembrane glycoprotein overexpressed on the surface of tumor cells in most of the patients affected by prostate adenocarcinoma (PCa). However, PSMA expression has also been demonstrated in the endothelial cells of newly formed vessels of various solid tumors, suggesting a role for PSMA in neoangiogenesis. In this scenario, gallium-68 (Ga) or fluoro-18 (F)-labeled PSMA positron emission tomography (PET) may play a role in tumors other than PCa, generally evaluated employing other radiopharmaceuticals targeting different pathways.

Wound Repair and Ca Signalling Interplay: The Role of Ca Channels in Skin.

Cells

March 2024

Dipartimento di Scienze e Innovazione Tecnologica (DiSIT), University of Piemonte Orientale, 15121 Alessandria, Italy.

The process of wound healing is intricate and tightly controlled, involving a number of different cellular and molecular processes. Numerous cellular functions, especially those related to wound healing, depend critically on calcium ions (Ca). Ca channels are proteins involved in signal transduction and communication inside cells that allow calcium ions to pass through cell membranes.
